After they closed the “big” thread, I think now I kind of understand why ANet introduced gear grind.

This is a MMO without a subscription fee. Therefore, to be profitable, they need keep selling more copies of the game. There are two types of players that may potentially buy GW2:
Type A: Those who had much MMO experience before but cannot commit enough time to gear grind as they now have a challenging job.
Type B: Those who have a lot of time for gaming.

(Players who have little MMO experience and have little time for gaming are unlikely to consider MMO anyway.)

A huge number of players of type A already bought GW2. Therefore, to try to sell more copies of GW2 fast, they plan to sell it to players of type B, and thus gear grind is required to keep those players playing.

The fact that WOW does gear grind better is not very important. The main reason is that WOW has a subscription fee.

Too bad that the initial GW2 manifesto lost to the priority of making profits. ANet does not want to admit this publicly, and that’s why they are silent.

I don’t see any point in pursuing this matter further…It’s possible to make a successful MMO with little grind, but unfortunately, turning it into a MMO with gear grind would increase the profit. Too bad that good things don’t last forever.

GW2 already peaked in sales with the first selling. The rest will simply be holiday gifts. Those will probably be lower now because of all the bad press from the change. People are tired of WoW for a reason, and its not just because of welfare epics and the world. ANET,Nexon, and NCSoft will learn the hard way.

A-Net didn’t introduce a gear grind. They released unreleased content that didn’t ship with the game, that’s why you didn’t pay for it via expansion pack. Almost all of the content being released was preconceived. If you don’t like it stop posting about it on the forum your QQ threads won’t change it.

Not really you never wondered why there was no legendary armor but there was legendary weapons? Or why when you look on the map all the areas are not done? Crystal Desert comes to mind there is a asura portal to it but no map? They spent 5 years developing the game no everything shipped with it.

This. The ‘gear grind’ model is an outdated, dying fad; no game will ever do as well as WoW did with that model. The best thing they could have done was double down on their manifesto and provide new horizontal content their loyal player base could be excited about.

perfect. But I’ll add do what they did with Guildwars1. There was less grind ironically then there is here but they never stated that as their manafesto lol………….
Look you can make a great game without this gear grind garbage but as a warning there are 10000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 mmos that have the same thing. People came here to leave those mmos but now your doing the same so what incentive do people have now to buy gems?

Lets look the game over:
DE -fine, but even these were poorly implemented
Combat -nothing revolutionary. I wish they would’ve done what dark souls combat has.
Guildwars franchise (as a flashy cover)
Voice actors -they range from WOW to oh god…..
That’s it.

So what does this game have over other games with this new approuch? Nothing! or well very little.

You can come back when you have done Fractals of the Mist 10 times plus.

FACT: No chance of getting ascended gear until you are at difficulty 10.
So you know what we call doing the same thing 10 times? Grind.

If I read another one of these threads I think I might puke.

So this is the reason why huh?!?! kitten and here I was thinking they were trying to make the game interesting for the people that play. If you don’t have the time to play then well either find the time when u can play or don’t play.

But please don’t throw a tantrum when something new comes out and it’s not tailored to your specific needs. And then come onto the forums making up accusations about why this and why that when you don’t know anything. For every opinion you have I have 5 other opinions, so this thread really does not better us in any way and should be closed.

But… There still isn’t any Legendary armour.

If Ascended gear was intended to be included with the game all along, it wouldn’t be so slapdash and clumsy. Or do you really think that it was all part of the master plan to eliminate customization by ‘baking in’ a Jewel upgrade, rendering every existing Jewel, Rune, and Sigil in the game instantly obsolete?
If it had been intended from the beginning, it wouldn’t have been a big deal to change the item programming to allow for two upgrade slots.

Ascended equipment is a band-aid fix, rushed to release because of symptoms that were wrongly attributed to a problem that doesn’t actually exist. (While the actual underlying problem(s) go untreated.)

Double this. Power creep in game design circles is a negative term. At this point in our evolution, the gear grind chasing stats is viewed more as lazy developers chasing simple-minded players. They don’t call it a treadmill for nothing. After you and everyone else has acquired the new tier of gear you are in the same place relative to other players and the mobs have gotten stronger so you are in the same place relative to the mobs. Exactly what has changed in this scenario? Nothing you climbed on the treadmill and you climbed off the treadmill. Before and after you are the same, not stronger. More and more people have become sophisticated about game design and game systems. Fewer and fewer are willing to accept out-dated concepts. That’s why Anet pushed the new kind of MMO in their marketing. It worked—I bought it based on the manifesto.

If you like the new patch, then just play the game instead of reading the posts.

Players who do not like the new patch need to discuss to find out what is happening, so that we can take actions accordingly. My opinion is that based on what seems to be the reason why they introduced gear grind, it is very likely that they will keep adding ascended items. Therefore, players who do not like the new patch have to make a decision regarding whether we should quit or try to cope with the changes.

A-Net didn’t introduce a gear grind.

Agony = resistance. Resistance on gear to delve deeper = continued progression. Continued progression = gear grind. It isn’t that hard. It is just like getting Fire Resistance on gear in other MMO’s.

To even mention that tells me you don’t do fractals.

They released unreleased content that didn’t ship with the game, that’s why you didn’t pay for it via expansion pack.

First of all, did you manage to know that how? Granted the Sea of Sorrows might have been in development before launch, but the fractals I highly doubt were. ANet had no mention of any sort of LDoN style dungeons and were pushing the idea of Story/explore.

Almost all of the content being released was preconceived. If you don’t like it stop posting about it on the forum your QQ threads won’t change it.

What does it matter if it was “thought” of before launch, things change during development. Most likely the original Fractal dungeons had no sort of “ascended” gear stat bump since ANet flat out told you they introduced it because of player feedback. Now Warlord how exactly would they have know about the players getting bored after exotic pre-launch? Unless they can read the future…

Here is a direct quote: “As we watch Guild Wars 2 mature in its Live environment, we have found that our most dedicated players were achieving their set of Exotic gear and hitting “the Legendary wall. We designed the process of getting Legendary gear to be a long term goal, but players were ready to start on that path much sooner than we expected and were becoming frustrated with a lack of personal progression.”

https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/linsey-murdock-unveils-new-high-end-ascended-gear/

That clearly indicates this was a response post launch.

BTW the Ascended gear needs a bit of tweeks, but for me I love it since all I do is dungeon run.

hmmm, there might be some subtle difference between types A and C, but there is not too much difference between what players of types A and C would like to have in an MMO.

I do agree that Ascended gear was meant to be in the game at launch. Why not it was in GW1 wasnt it?

But you dont set the tone for gear by releasing the game, saying nothing about the missing tier, and then toss it in later.

If they really wanted to but ascended gear into the game after launch, then it should of matched the stats of exotic gear, and the infusions should not of increased your stats, just gave you the tools to survive the new “style” of dungeon.

Also, people tend to assume that WoW was successful because of the design of its mechanics as a treadmill driven game, but in actuality WoW’s success was/is in many ways incidental and drew little from specific design choices like gear grinding (which had been present in its predecessors).

In reality, WoW’s sucess was based almost entirely on a combination of it being the “sequel” to the very popular WC3 combined with its polish and fluid game-play relative to other MMOs. This led to WoW being a breakout hit and consequently to MMOs entering the mainstream market. In addition to the fact that its success was largely incidental, the game is 7 years old and due to it being fairly mainstream during its entire lifespan, its design has grown stale and dated.

Taking that into account, thinking that you can be successful by simply making a WoW clone is frankly incredibly stupid and Bioware learned that the hard way. ANet will too if they don’t work hard to avoid GW2 heading in that direction.

What most amusing is that Blizzard had admitted in D3 that gear hunt would be unsustainable end game and there were hints that their new next-gen MMO might have a gear cap. Would be ironic that Anet tries copy Wow and Blizzard took GW2 original idea of gear cap and made it big and become the next big MMO and got credited with it.

It was not. Not at launch, not ever.

There were a handful of incredibly rare/costly/valuable armour sets, some of which were in the game at launch, but much like a (pre-Lost Shores) Legendary weapon, they were entirely a cosmetic upgrade. There was no differentiation between ‘tiers’ of armour in terms of stats.
