There is no other way to make a MMO other than using the treadmill. Theres no progression without a treadmill… How do you guys not see that, how can sitting in the same gear since you turned level 80, and downing bosses that don’t vary in toughness be fun!?

It worked fine in GW1 without a treadmill. Need I remind you that many of us are here because of how much we enjoyed that?

Having played numerous MMO’s I eventually identified the one characteristic which drove me away from all of them. The gear treadmill. A gear treadmill is a linear design concept where every time new content is released, new gear is added with higher stats, effectively making all previous acquired gear obsolete (As well as your previous time & effort).

https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/linsey-murdock-unveils-new-high-end-ascended-gear/

“This is just the beginning. In November, we’re only adding the first level of Infusions and Ascended Rings and Back slots, so that leaves us a lot of room to build upon these levels of Item progression in future content.

As we release more new end game content in the future, you’ll see more Infusions and Ascended item types being added to the game. Eventually, you’ll be able to kit yourself out with a full set of Ascended gear and high end Infusions to help give you the edge in end game content."

Perhaps I am misinterpreting your meaning but what I am reading as a customer is:

“We are going to continue to add better gear with addition of every content update rendering your previous gear void & oh yeah, your friends who haven’t logged on in a few months they will no longer be able to do content with you because they are not ascended.”

Now if I am not mistaken in GW2’s mission statement/manifesto was it not stated that GW2 would “NOT” be a gear treadmill based MMO?

WVW and , bosses CAN be tougher, and they can be fun, you just need to counter them with skill instead of stats

New content, yes. More cool skins, yes. Gating, I don’t know, maybe yes.

New tier gear with better stats (and more gear grind to come!) that nerf all existing Exotic gear?
Kitten no.

If you introduce a stats upgrade i will leave this game definitively with no regret.

THESE SHOULD BE THE GAME UPGRADES:

-Introduce New Stat Mixes should be fine

-introduce a daily Spvp balance as GW1

-change this stupid Spvp sistem and half this damage. A flurry of damage is not skill that can be see only in a long fight

-introduce a bar showing the target using skill and the cast time progression

-introduce a cast time for each skill, istant skills are for WoW newbie casual pvp

-Introduce a WvsWvsW sistem that empower server players with less presences in the map and linearly rewards Keep/Tower/Camp maintaining in the time. This will avoid some impossible WvsWvsW matches.

-Introduce an Ip Block for Canadians int he Fr europe server

-Introduce Bar brawl and other mini games as pet fight

-introduce guesting for PVE

-introduce new Pve mechanics like Weather and terrain

Imho these are game improvements, armor stat upgrade should belong to another game. A different Pve infused Jewel and Rune to farm a Mursat dungeon should be fine. Among PVE, Jewel, rune and Mursat Dungeon the world PVP is missing.

“…about these new items as I am!”

This is obviously the last paragraph of the news post made by Linsey Murdock. Since the other thread is very long, with single users posting multiple replies, I just had a little idea.

Let’s see, for real, if anet really “listens” to the players.

Just make a single post and nothing else in this thread, replying at the “hope” of Linsey, with a simple “Yes, I love the new ascended items” or “No, I hate the new ascended items.”

And let’s show anet, at least for us people browsing the official forums, how many are the nays and how many are the ayes.

My vote is:

NAY

The dungeon sounds like it would be fantasitc, if it wasn’t for the fact that you have to grind gear to do it. ANET, you killed the game. Now people won’t do all the great content you guys made and will only focus on this and 1000s of others, like me, won’t even bother playing anymore. I regret the $200+ dollars I spent on the game and if you go through with this gear grind crap I’ll simply quit.

I will not leave GW2 because of ascended items, I will leave GW2 because it is bad.

In my eyes it is failing to do what runescape did so so long ago. Everything seems to much like its trying to be that game, the skills, the pvp, the server changes!!! (are these the only 2 mmos with free server changes?) I played that game for 5 years when i was a teenager and from start to finish the armor progression stopped at level 70 (30 levels before maxing) 4 years of me playing the game and they finally added new armor and guess what, it was amazing, awesome, and for level 65.

They made it work, anet will not.

Also I know for a fact that anet bans innocent people, (murders citizens of tyria) so why continue with my 700+ hour account, just as I was about to hit my second 80 ah well.

FYI: your order armor should have been for level 40 when you join your order that’s how you get character progression. You would be able to witness the existential population progression of tyria and its orders if you had done that. You would have been able to see which order was the most popular by looking at your fellow players, instead you give us this kitten. What the hell is the point of having so many available late game skins when I hear people talking about not having money to waypoint.

Bad move Anet. You will be forcing WvW players to have to grind the dungeon.
Guild Wars 2 don’t need gear trendmill. And you guys don’t need people quiting the game because of it. Just reward people with better looking items.

99% of the game is still free of gear progression. Only this one endgame dungeon requires increasing amounts of “Agony” resistance, this is the one area where they’re building in progression, so people that would otherwise stop playing have a place to run 20 times per day.
It’s kinda like a Diablo minigame in the game. If you don’t like it, just skip it.

Besides, I’m sure that the next endgame dungeon will have… “Corruption” or something, that makes your Ascended gear full of Infusion completely useless, so you can start over again slotting “Purity” upgrades. (and at the same time, not having Infusion will not set you back in this new dungeon).

Wrong. Ascended is a gear type you can use anywhere. Read the post on gw2.com. You can use it anywhere in the game. Meaning they will make all existing content easier & easier each time they release a new progression.

Convinced many of my friends in University to try this game out on the premises that it wasn’t a gear grind that they had to devote 20 hours a week to. Well GG ArenaNet.

And to everyone saying hardcore PvE players want this: No! The entire GW1 hardcore PvE community has very good ties to each other in GW2 as well, and NO ONE I have spoken to is excited about this…

We wanted more skins that are awarded for doing dungeons (as opposed to shelling out money), not this kitten gear progression.

It generally works fine in all games.

In most MMOs you need a certain stat threshold for progression purposes.

Agony is no different than requiring your main tank in WoW have a certain amount of health, block, dodge, armor, etc…

And agony is built into the dungeon itself, meaning to get good at the dungeon, you need to run that dungeon. Unlike other games where you’re grinding gear for the next tier of content.

sorry but you don’t know what you are talking about. these type of stats are HATED in every game they are added to.

Mursaat had a spell named Spectral Agony in GW1. It was a special monster skill that could not be removed by hex removal.
We fought Mursaat only after being Ascended when following the story and we had to infuse our armor to greatly reduce its damage. It was practically impossible to survive through Spectral Agony without infused armor.

Maybe we’ll see mursaat soon.

GW1 had things people pursued without a gear treadmill. There were rare things that dropped in certain dungeons like the Froggy Scepter or Bonecage Scythe. You had prestige armor that took a long time to get. High end mods were worth quite a lot. You had special head slot items that required tons of a certain item in EotN.

It was all cosmetic, but it worked.

Heck, one thing that they overlooked in their explanation is that exotics aren’t really one tier. There are tiers within exotics. Cultural Armor is so expensive that its a tier above regular exotic armor due to rarity. I have exotic weapons, but I’m nowhere near getting a Whisperblade like I’d want to have due to the cost of attaining the item. It’s an exotic just like a Pearl Sabre is, but prestige and mentality-wise, its much further up than a “starter” exotic.

If these items go live, and require any kind of grind to obtain them, this patch will be remembered as the first nail in the coffin for GW2. The game will become nothing more than another WoW clone like Rift.

The increasing difficulty comes in the form or more monsters, higher monster hp and bigger damage from monsters. This coupled with the agony condition is what they meant when they say it gets increasingly difficult. I suggest you re-read all the information that is present. There is more info than the blog post suggests.

I do remember the monster number and damage/health numbers increasing. However, this still does not imply anywhere Ascended gear will be required to beat it on the very first playthrough, nor does it state or imply how the Ascended items are going to be attained from the dungeon. I find it very foolish to even think you’ll need it for a FotM0 run through any set of wings. Let’s assume the gear is drops, are they 100% chance drops, or some other non-zero chance drop? Every time you return to the dungeon, which is after you complete the 3 wings assigned to your group, it gets more difficult. Do these Ascended items only drop in the higher tiered difficulties? Can you reset the Fractals to a certain difficulty if you prefer the amount or type of rewards it gives? 3 giving transmutable gear skins, 4 giving a 25% chance at an Ascended drop instead of 5%, and 5 giving a chance at two Ascended drops rather than one for example.

Unless something has been posted very recently regarding this, I don’t think anyone knows. Also, if Ascended gear is going to be attained through a drop mechanic from the bosses, unless it is a 100% drop chance, if you don’t get it, then you’re screwed from ever completing it if the gear is a requirement for progressing through it at all.

Until I see how loot is dealt with at higher difficulty levels of the dungeon, I will maintain my stance they are nothing more than a challenge mode for more of a chance, or for something purely cosmetic, and the completioon of the Level 0 mode will be all that’s required for progression.

Have I got it all wrong ???? I’ve read that this gear will only be good inside the new dungeon………. That won’t change anything outside this dungeon, you will still use your other armor outside the dungeon, and even if it’s good outside the dungeon the added power is probably minimal, like between Exotics and Legendary right now….

PLEASE STOP GOING CRAZY ! We need to learn more about this before we can judge……

Infusion slot is the only part that is dungeon only. The rest of the stats works outside of the dungeon.

If the increased stats are outside of the dungeon. Then it will lead to a increased level cap and level 90 zones.

While i agree that mostly MMO’s without gear progression just ain’t gonna work, i think it worked just fine with GW1. Ofc that’s subjective too, some peole might think otherwise, but personally i think that is the one game that worked fine without constant gear progressing.

Just to clarify, i’m not aganist treadmills, i like collecting gear.

After reading the blog entry, it’s now obvious that this is a total betrayal of the manifesto and of what has been promised about this game. And if it wasn’t bad enough, there’s a single place to get that gear, that single dungeon.

I gave 80+ Euros to the shop in addition to the digital deluxe edition purchase. Well, I won’t ever give a cent for this game again if this goes live. This is more than a slippery slope, this is a new tier of forced dungeon gear, and than less than 3 months after the release of the game. If that’s what the game is heading for, well, there are other games which do dungeons grinds better than this one.

I placed my vote, against itemization in strongest way possible. Legendaries were done right, different look but no stat increase over exotics. I did believe there would be no gear itemization in gw2, and am (for the first time) actually extremely disappointed. I’ve not agreed with everything gw2 has been doing, but I’d thought I’d finally found the one mmorpg for me, for the first time I’m second guessing that. If itemization is here, and apparently it is, I’ll go back to looking for someone else to do it right without “gear progression.”

Extremely disappointed, strongly hope A-net reconsiders and aborts this instead of turning away previously total supporters such as myself.

I just want to add my voice to the clamor that’s already against this design choice. I’m very troubled at what seems to be a new direction; troubled enough to post on the forums for the first time. I absolutely loved how straightforward it was in GW1 to get max stats gear, and loved the focus on horizontal progression. It was so nice to be able to return after sizeable breaks knowing that the only place I had fallen behind was the metagame. I really, really hope ANet reconsiders adding new items that are statistically superior to what’s already in the game.

Funny thing is that in GW1 they had “LF X, needs to be norn rank 8 or higher” or “LF max lightbringer rank” and then they add to make the differences between ranks smaller.

One would think they would learn with the real world but i guess their manuals of gaming design theory were all made by the same silly person.

Ascended items are Anet biggest mistake and a kneejerk reaction.

There is no other way to make a MMO other than using the treadmill. Theres no progression without a treadmill… How do you guys not see that, how can sitting in the same gear since you turned level 80, and downing bosses that don’t vary in toughness be fun!?

Not really. Over 7 years, Guild Wars 1 had zero power creep.

And thats why the game was only popular for a few months, they are trying to stop that from happening to this game.

Insanely exaggerated responses aside (leaving the game because of this? Please.), it is incredible how almost everybody seems to agree on this Ascended gear being a bad thing.

I curiously await Anet’s response.

Nothing you are saying here is improving or pushing the PvE experience foreword. I don’t 100% concur that what they are doing is the best thing in the world, but it is SOMETHING. At least giving something for PvE folks to do that is not craft legendary items.

You do realize that agony is only in the most deepest levels of new dungeon, not anywhere else. Impact to the overall PvE experience will be minimal.

This outrage is hilariously stupid.

I guarantee an ANet dev will post in the next few days and explain that NO, they said nothing about adding new equipment tiers every 6 months, and as the blog explained, they saw a need to bridge the gap between Exotic and Legendary by adding ONE new tier.

You people are going to give yourself aneurisms over nothing. Stop freaking out. Constructive feedback is great, but ya’ll are taking it too far.

Except there didn’t used to be a tier difference from exotic to legendary… sorry to completely ruin your post with some simple point…. oh wait no I’m not.
THERE WAS NO GAP BETWEEN EXOTIC AND LEGENDARY WHY DID THEY ADD ONE?

Dude. I never said anything about a stat gap. I should have been more clear. It’s a PROGRESSION gap, as in once you get full exotic you’ve got nothing left to do besides the enormous wall to legendary. That’s what they said in the blog post. And I agree, with the caveat that they don’t plan on adding any more tiers.

Like I’ve posted over and over. I understand the concern. But we don’t know anything more than basic details from a single blog post. I’m hoping the infusions are a horizontal progression and not vertical.

just pushed my jeweler to 400 yesterday

Their should be no more progression on crafting either. AN just needs to give us reasons to still craft 1-400 items.

ArenaNet, you need to learn from the experience of other MMOs.

LOTRO had a similar system called ‘radiance’ gear, which was required for endgame raids. Every new raid had radiance requirements, and it served as a gating mechanic. Big efforts were required to get radiance gear just so you could attend the raids.

The playerbase almost universally HATED it. Loathed it. It took the developers a couple of years to get rid of it, and it did a lot of damage. It was a big reason why I stopped playing that game.

Don’t make the same mistakes. What GW2 needs is more content that’s fun to play on a daily basis. The new dungeon sounds, in theory, like a good thing in that you can attempt to beat your personal best, etc. That’s good. But it should NOT be gated behind stats. That’s a terrible, terrible idea.

There is no other way to make a MMO other than using the treadmill. Theres no progression without a treadmill… How do you guys not see that, how can sitting in the same gear since you turned level 80, and downing bosses that don’t vary in toughness be fun!?

This has to be a troll post.

Nobody is this ignorant surely.

Have you played any MMO’s before WoW butchered the market?

Every decent MMO uses the treadmill system weather you know it or not, please name one that doesen’t.

DAoC, SB.

All of which had strong communities playing for 10 years+

This game will be dead within 1 year if it continues down this path.

Quoted so I can look back on this post and laugh in a year.

To the OP: We have absolutely no idea at all how this gear will work, relax and see how it plays out before telling us the sky is falling. The way I interpreted the article was that a new rarity of gear was being added that will keep the same level of stat distribution from here on out. Yes the stats go up very minutely now but they will be stabilized for the foreseeable future, but again this is just pure speculation. As I said earlier, relax and see how it plays it.

I am Death incarnate.

This is all true, as I said in my thread. Some players want to achieve and move forward. If you don’t, no one is forcing you.

That would be the case if the gear didn’t also come with BETTER STATS and ANET plans on allowing players TO HAVE A FULL SET and build content around HAVING BETTER STATS. It completely changes how end game is done. Now it will be GLF players with 5 pieces of Agony gear. PvP becomes more IMBA as well.

ANET could have easily added more content, like Agony, that didn’t require gear grind but character progression. Character progression isn’t random chance drops, is permanent, and doesn’t distract from their philosophy. Doing the fractal dungeon could have made your character gain ascended levels that allow you to devele deeper into the dungeon and uncover mysteries never seen before while dropping Legendary crafting material like candy or gave you rare boss skins like the deep did in GW1.

If I wanted to buy a gear grind tread mill game I wouldn’t of bought GW2. Now, if ANET plans on keeping this POS system that is reason why MMOs are stale (GW2 was actually a breath of fresh air) I won’t bother playing the game, picking it back up when new expansion come out, or spending another dime in the gem store (and I’ve already spent $200+). You will lose us ANET, and we would have been the people to keep your profitable for years just like GW1. Now you have catered to the fickle MMO crowd who will eat up your content and quit when the next shiny kitten is released. Hop you are happy.

Don’t you think you’re being too dramatic, guys? I mean, I don’t like the vertical gear progression, but even me, a very casual player, has 3 80’s on his account with full exotics… Ascended items aren’t more than other armors that instead of using runes and jewels, uses infusion. Where’s the problem, QQ’s? (GW1)

It’s siiimple, eeeeeasy, and you don’t need to griiiiind…

Emerald Orichalcum Ring of the Knight -92 Toughness / 63 Precision / 63 Power
Opal Orichalcum Ring of the Explorer -7% MF / 63 power / 63 Precision
Yakkington’s Ring -10% MF / 68 power / 68 precision
Means 1% MF is about 13.1 Toughness (92/7 = 13.1428)
Nicolas Sandford’s Theoretical Ring of the Knight – 131.4 Toughness / 68 Power / 68 Precision

No one ever knows what your talking about, so I guess you’re already there.

I don’t see the point in Agony either.
Apparently it’s only countered by using specific gear, so skill isn’t going to matter against this new condition. What kind of useless design is that? To create a new condition that is negated by gear.
At least in Guild Wars 1, Infusion was part of the storyline, so if you followed the story you had no problems against Spectral Agony whatsoever. Not to mention that Mursaat played a very small role in the game, only appearing in a handful of missions, not even end-game content.

Just who the hell do you think I am!?
