How is it that you guys can read “slightly more powerful” and conclude that exotics are automatically obsolete and it’s the end of the world? O.o Have you noticed ANYTHING Anet’s done so far in GW1 or GW2? If they offer ANY sort of significant game advantage I can guarantee you they’ll take less than a week of casual gaming to obtain.

Stop judging Arenanet based on the standard set by other treadmill games when there’s no precedent for it and you have NO information on what Ascended gear will actually be.

Take off the blindfold and see that this isn’t the same Arenanet that made GW1.
Hell, it’s not the same Arenanet that started development on GW2.
How many of the things they said in the years before the release were actually true?

Account wide dyes? Scrapped.
Personal story choices will matter? Hahaha, no. You get 30 levels of “personal” story, then you’re heading to Trahearneville.
Dungeon rewards? Turned into a grind.
Cash shop for cosmetics only? Boosts everywhere ever since they hired that Nexon woman.
The entire article about town clothing and armour? You get one (1) set of town clothing and that’s it.

Why do you think it’ll be a grind?!?!?! Even EXOTICS weren’t a grind. You could get a full set of exotics by doing 1-2 dungeons a day for a week! You guys are basing all this hysteria on ONE sentence in a MAGAZINE and your perceptions of treadmill games from the past.

Why don’t you WAIT to hear from Anet about the items and how they’re acquired. Right now we know NOTHING about how they’ll work or how they’ll acquired. Jeez, is EVERYONE on the forums a Chicken l\Little?

Exotic armour isn’t a grind? Having to do the same dungeon 30 times is rather repetitive.
Also, Arenanet linked these articles on their Twitter/FB pages. What’s in there is legit.

And everyone on the forums has some experience with games, and they see the slippery slope. You’re just being a fanboy/girl/it.
We’re being realistic here.

i have faith that in anet and im sure this will all turn out just fine.. my only question would be.. does this new dungeon reset? They say that each subsequent attempt becomes more difficult.. is this ad nauseum? I would hope it resets each day to its initial difficulty or each week… that would be nice.

Slow down and smell the pixels.

Stop judging Arenanet based on the standard set by other treadmill games when there’s no precedent for it and you have NO information on what Ascended gear will actually be.

The issue is, is it is a gear treadmill. Something that was promised would not be in this game. Everything was supposed to be a cosmetic grind. Getting max stats (exotics) was easy. There was no mandatory grind to gear up in this game.

Now they are introducing a new tier, which is better than exotics. And it will be an advantage as the gear is already stronger and we know it has an infusion slot as well to make you even more powerful. Already two things to make them more powerful than exotics.

So yes, exotics will become obsolete. Anytime better gear is introduced, the old gear becomes obsolete. Especially when that better gear has upgrade options to make it even better than the original. Thus, Anet introducing a gear treadmill now.

Ïf they introduce this armor …

So long Guild Wars 2 .. Hey Dota 2 and Elders scrolls online

I am playing guild wars 2 for one reason. Everythign here is about skin. Not about stats. If you introduce more powerful armor, weapons than current exotics I have no more intention to play this game. Ive spent about 250 euros already and 900 hours. Wasted time and money then.

This gonna just force players to work for this ascended gear even if they dont want to just to be on the same level as the others. And thats what Guild Wars isnt about.

Dont see any reason to play GW2 when there are better mmorpg with better PVE and better gear treadmills

Whats next? level 90 in next expansion? Pandas? PvP tier 1-15 gear? No thank you … Dont want to play Guild Wars 2 which has nothing to do with Guild Wars 1 .. its more likely becoming World of warcraft 2

But if its someting like armor infusion … whatever

This may as well mean the end of GW2 for me. That gear will be used in WvW, making those who do the treadmill overpowered compared to the others.

This is actually betrayal. This goes against the game’s manifesto that was released during development.

If I want to grind gear, I can play WoW. Please be VERY careful with what you’re going to do here, ANet. I for one promise that I will NEVER inject one more cent into this game if you add a gear treadmill to it.

If they put in better armor than Anet can 1 expect a PR nightmare and 2 people leaving due to lying about not putting in a gear treadmill. Who ever came up with the idea should be fired and pay already given returned as well as the person that oked it. All money should then be given to the playerbase as compensation in the form gems.

It kind of sounds like raid gear. The article also states the gear will help you tackle new challenges in the dungeon.

I’ll guess it has stats on it like -5% damage taken from <creature type>, 10% more damage against <creature type>, etc.

I bought this game to avoid the gear treadmill crap. I have already spent so much time getting the gear I need, and now it’s not gonna be good enough? I went into this game thinking it would be about skill, not constantly grinding for stats.

I’m gonna say it right now: Anet, if you decide to go through with this, I promise you will never see another cent from me. I’ll just uninstall and never look back. It may sound childish, but that’s what’s gonna happen.

Then they reach the goal they set out to reach and leave the game regardless. If you need grind to maintain your interest rather than the game itself, then you should simply cease to play the game, either entirely or until an update catches your attention. People quit WoW because they run out of things to do, introducing a gear treadmill isn’t going to keep people’s interest in GW2.

Curiously enough, only MMOs are expected to have a grind. Any other game, you play it because it’s fun. MMOs? Kitten that ludicrous concept of entertainment, let’s work towards an arbitrary goal that will be rendered obsolete within a month or two.

I’ve been making a campaign to recruit new players among my friends (many of whom are disgusted ex-WoW players) and I don’t want to lie to them by saying this game is free of the stinking gear treadmill if you guys will all of sudden change your minds and introduce a new tier of armor.

Not 3 months in and already power creep and gear grind?

Unless this Ascended armor is here to replace already-hard-to-get exotics and make it easier to obtain max-stats armor, this isn’t a good addition to the game.

Hard to get? Are you serious? It is so easy to get your exotic armor set in this game its not even funny. I had full exotics 2 days after i hit 80, and that is while working 40 hours a week. The crafted sets are fairly, cheap, about 2g a piece, and the dungeon sets are easy to get. Run all paths of AC once a day (1 hour in a good group) and you can get the boots and gloves. With 2 days and 8~ gold, you have your set.

Granted, they don’t look that great (Draconic heavy armor is pretty ugly), but thats why there are multiple dungeons. Build up your level 80 armor set based on stats, then work on aesthetics. I made my full crafted set when i hit 80, and since then have transmuted it with gear from CoE, Arah, AC and TA.

Personally, I’m really looking forward to this update and the new gear. I know it’ll keep a few of my close-to-quitting guild mates playing

I hope this isn’t as bad as it seems, but based on that bit of information alone, that does seem to go against what they said they wanted for the game before. Also, locking this gear behind dungeon content is even worse than simply adding more powerful armor. I really don’t like that at all. I don’t want to jump to conclusions, but on the surface, this is really making me question where they’re going in the future.

That’s very different. Once you did the 10 levels, you craft new exotics and you are ok again. No treadmill to go through to be competitive, which was promised by the developers during the whole development phase of the game. No single way to get the best gear. Every play style is competitive. That was promised.

What we have here is the best gear of the game only available through ONE game system – and that’s this new dungeon. Does this ring a bell to any of you? Yeah, that’s tiered gear grinding just like WoW and its clones. That’s the beginning of the slippery slope. Tier 2. Force people into one dungeon (aka raid tier) to get better gear.

sigh
After all the big talk about this game being different… they couldn’t stick to their guns.

It’s a real shame, and one of the things I liked best about the game, and made it the most fun for me (the power plateau and optional grind) is going to go away to be replaced by more WoW-formula endless gear grinding.

How much do you want to bet that part of the new dungeon requires multiple groups to complete. That wouldn’t surprise me at this point. Might as well go all the way to the dark side.

Come on, ArenaNet…does your word and your design philosophy mean nothing? Do you honestly think that changing these fundamentals now is going to bring in players who don’t enjoy the game? It won’t. All this will do is make a significant portion of the players who DO enjoy the game unhappy. This is exactly the type of thing I have learned to expect from MMO companies, and one of the main reasons I was close to leaving the genre behind for good before GW2 came along. ArenaNet was different. Their game was different. Don’t throw that away. You can’t be all things to all people, and trying is going to ruin the trust you’ve gained with your dedicated player base in the short time since launch.

It comes easy. Hell, I had most of my exotic pieces on my main before I even hit 80.

The bottom line is, this game isn’t Guild Wars. This game has been opened up to a load of new players that need some sort of progression.

I mean before we all go overboard with the up’ed stats… do we even know by how much? Is say, +10-20 to any stat gonna make that much more overpowered?

What if it’s increased stats on things like healing power, toughness, and condition damage?… having something with an extra +100 condition damage, while it seems OP compared to other stats, it means my bleed now does something like 18 more damage a tick. Almost the same is true for +healing. Armor + toughness have diminishing returns on how they affect defense, so even +100 extra toughness isn’t the same as +100 extra in any other stat.

Not big fan of idea of higher tier of items stat wise. Current system works well, it gives me choice.

If ascended armors are only available in there it means that to have optimal stats I do have do that specific dungeon, maybe it will be fun, maybe it will be best thing since sliced bread, but in the end it limits my choice.

Currently if I want exotic set I have several ways to obtain it: I can craft it, I can buy it off TP, I can run dungeons for the token or I can grind karma – That’s fine, I am not forced one path. Why change it suddenly?

If You want to add meaningful infusion slots, great, but let us obtain them in more than one way or don’t do it at all.

I’d written out a nice long post that apparently got lost when they merged the threads. The tdlr was:

I do not like this and I can’t see how this will not lead to the endless treadmilling effect but I will tentatively withhold judgement. I currently play this game exclusively, and I’ve played it slowly because I had thought that the developers were not going to be initiating a power creep.

If I’d wanted to play a game with endless power progression and tiered endgame gear I’ll go back to playing the game that does that best, which incidentally is not GW2.

This dungeon sounds awesome already. I LOVE endless content like this.

As for the stats… “slightly more powerful” shouldn’t be a big deal. I mean, if you get 3 more stats on a piece of armor, does that really make a difference when you’re in the thousands? I’m actually happy to see something more to work towards. If they start putting in multiple dungeons with increasing power for each one that requires the previous set to complete… then I’ll be upset.
