Really for 100th time , please dont make it grind fest, please.

The whole game is a grind fest.

??

No it isn’t. The only grind this game has at the moment is optional cosmetic grind.

Most, if not all people agree with that. A gear-threadmill however, is not OK.

And 2% more stats that isn’t required for ANYTHING, is mandatory how exactly?

Exotic items aren’t mandatory either, right? You’ll do just fine in common-rarity (white) stuff you bought from an armorsmith npc.

What a joke.

LOL what a good example, way to over-exaggerate another point for your own silly argument.

Rare gear is nearly just as good as Exotics, you can do anything in this game in Rare gear with no problems.

And you actually bring up another point, why is there White/Blue/Green gear in this game? It’s a gear treadmill, why aren’t you crying about that???

That isn’t a Treadmill, that is gearing up your character. White/Blue/Green can all easily be got and then Exotics is what you work towards at the end.

A treadmill is when they constantly add better gear that you have to grind to get. We already have to grind up to get Exotics one way or another, why do we have to do it again for Ascended?

You do not require Exotics to complete the current dungeons. Stop it.

One last post, you should have built your community instead of having it torn apart.

Server versus server, you let it get in the way of guesting and it had no proper point to it. No faction, just meaningless names.

Halloween items separated the community further, black lion chests were a quick cash grab. This didn’t build community, it made it difficult to have one.

In a treadmill environment, people are at odds and must either farm market manipulate or exploit to get ahead and its not right.

Why wasn’t the first step to build community? Why wasn’t the first step simply guesting and such?

The community will just get worse when everyone is required to have full ascended to do certain dungeons.

Why should I bother playing a community oriented game with no community?

Actually a pretty clever depiction of gear grind. Each new sentence in the paragraph = a new tier of gear.

I think a lot of players object to gear treadmill because they hate the gear they worked for being replaced. What if ascended armor merely took your armor and boosted it? Simply made it better by adding a slot or something?

Anet. I have faith in you guys as a company, so I will not rage at you. I will wait, and see how this is actually being handled. But please oh please do not include steadily increasing stats. Currently I am using level 79 rares, even though I’ve had the game since release. I love that I have all the time in the world to pick up my exotics. Please do not change that. Otherwise I will be severely disappointed in you and this: https://www.guildwars2.com/media/videos#vlb/bKtGxVj3msM

Good Morning,

I too share the concerns that this could be the beginning of the gear grind that so prevalent in other MMO’s. I hope that it not and this represents a one time change to GW2’s previous stance on gear.

That being said, if you are going to do this then save your self a little hart ache please just call the armor Legendary increase the stats and looks appropriately and let it ride. Also If I were you I would also increase the stats on Legendary weapons as well to balance out with the new gear. I don’t think that anyone would disagree that Legendary’s should be slightly more powerful than exotics.

Just don’t make the mistake to change the level tuning of the dungeons. The first time that a dungeon is introduced that is tuned more for those that have this legendary set you will see a bigger back lash then what has been posted here already.

Thank you for a great game and I hope it goes far.

Humbly Submitted,
The Last Jagaroth

P.S.
Please introduce legendary Dye’s (Fire, Star field, Transparent, Etc)

Well, of course I’m being childish!
There’s no point being grown-up if you can’t be childish sometimes.

If ANet has posted in this thread, unfortunately I’ve missed it. The devs might have already covered/clarified what I am about to say, but I did not see it in my cursory view of the thread.

I hate gear progression. HATE. I very much liked the idea of Exotic Armors being relatively easy to attain, and that anything beyond them was going to be visual upgrades only (see Legendary items). I did not play WoW, because I hate raiding for gear. I did not play EQ/EQ2/whatever other gear grind game here because I hate raiding for gear.

If ANet continues to add levels/tiers of items above Ascended, my wife and I are out. That’s not a threat, it’s just the acknowledgement that ANet is heading in a game design direction that neither of us like or prefer. And the good news? The lack of a subscription makes it very easy to drop the game without thinking I’ve wasted money along the way.

I’m thrilled about the new dungeon, about the slight vertical progression of gear. We’re not talking about 100+ stat upgrades, we’re probably going to be looking at minor stat upgrades (ie: Rare stats to Exotic). I doubt they’ll let it become as bloated as World of Warcraft. Everyone seems to be overly dramatic about what the future holds. The game is still a baby, a year from now people won’t even think twice about this change.

Anyways, as a PVE player, I’m bored with GW2’s PVE progression system. I have 4 80s, all with exotic gear and I’m not quite sure what to do with myself when I log in (WvWvW bores me, SPVP feels imbalanced). I have full Arah gear and none of the dungeons are challenging and the rewards from chests are terrible.

I’m happy they’re doing this. I’m not a casual player and I feel like up until now, the PVE has been geared towards casuals with no real longevity.

Wait, what?! I lvled my armor / weapon crafting to 400 because they said “best statted” (exotic) gear can be crafted. And now we can get slightly better in new dungeon?! Well, I’m very disappointed. I don’t do dungeons at all (only did Arah for personal story) but I really enjoy crafting! This update makes crafting useless because people will want this new gear, even if it’s only slightly better, I know player’s mentality, they will WANT the better stats! I enjoy farming mats and crafting for my friends and now they made crafting useless, no one will need my crafted gear anymore… WTH ArenaNet. Why?!?!?

Stats or bonus for the new dungeon alone (similar to lightbringer rank) with no impact outside it, are fine.
A new tier of armor that makes older content easier isn’t.

Ascended items are Anet biggest mistake and a kneejerk reaction.

I find it stunning that ArenaNet doesn’t realize…the whiners will NEVER be satisfied. They will never be happy. You add a bit higher stats, and a week from now they will be decked out in new gear and back to complaining that there’s nothing to do and nothing to strive for. If they are missing the point now, they will continue to miss the point no matter how much you try to cater to them.

They will never be happy. Those players that were happy, are now going to feel betrayed due to your obvious desire to cater to others at the expense of what we enjoy.

Maybe they’ll add a new tier of stats every month. It still won’t stop the whining, their player base will shrink significantly, and they’ll sit back and act dumbfounded as to how it could have happened. “We listened to our players!” No you didn’t. You listened to people who never liked your game, and never will, and allowed them to dictate the subversion of your design philosophy. It’s a shame.

This is a pretty accurate assessment of the situation. As a MMORPG veteran myself – UO beta, MUDs before), I can tell you that you’re right, and hopefully ANet will realize that too before it’s too late.

I think someone from Arena Net needs to do some PR damage control and explain:

  • What are those ascended armors ?
  • Why are they more powerful than Exotic ?
  • Is the buff dedicated to the Fractal of the Mist or permanent ?
  • Same about the infusion slot

The way it was announced make 98% of us feels it’s a direct betrayal of the “GuildWars 2 Manifesto” and “The Golden Rules of Guild Wars 2”

What insignia’s did was making it able to match stats with whatever look you want, instead of looks based on stats. Pretty much what transmutation stones do now. Insignia’s did not, in any way, make better armor then armor allready in game.

I won’t mind in the least, so long as i don’t have to go “grind” dungeons in order to go do WvW, or Spvp.

I’ve been playing MMOs a long time, and my least favorite thing to do is grind the same dungeons over and over for the sake of “rewards” and “progression”. Ahh well.

My guess is this is going to be something like the Kael’Thas fight in Tempest Keep. The super powerful weapons that drop in there are limited to that dungeon alone to assist in fighting Kael’Thas.

Simple as that. You find more and more ascended gear while in the dungeon to help you continue going deeper, and deeper into the dungeon. Just a gimmick.

Most likely just speculation from this site, and thus, a poo-storm erupts on the forums.

The way to get people to stay in game and to stick to your design manifesto is to make it so that once you’ve transmuted a skin onto a level 80 exotic, it becomes available in a wardrobe that can be placed on any item, do the same thing with unlocking stats ideally. This way players can set a goal for themselves (filling out said wardrobe) and those players will be the kind that want to play THIS game.

Just out of curiosity…. if this dungeon offers a “gear treadmill” but is totally contained within the dungeon itself, meaning none of the “extra stats” earned work anywhere except in the dungeon, how many people would be opposed to this?

Is there truly no room in this Tryia to have a “treadmill zone” especially if it doesn’t spill over into the rest of the World?

The reason why I ask is because I’m not sure why people are so adamantly opposed to Anet making something to create happiness for as much of the player-base as possible. Saying that, even if the above holds true, that you’ll quit because you don’t want it is rather selfish especially if it has no impact on your ability to enjoy the game.

Also, people quoting the philosophy and manifesto… first of all, it’s a guideline in terms of designing the game and not some fiat that must be rigidly followed. Second, if you really want to hold to that manifesto/philosophy, there are a couple of things within those bodies of text that are not carried through into the game, just saying.

This is the funniest thread I’ve read in a long, time.
Thank you all for entertaining me enough that I’ve actually not gone and made my morning coffee yet. C:

I forgot how much I loved the doomsayer end-of-the-world MMO Crowd.

I’m not gonna lie,
Even during my 5 years playing GW1 before moving here,
I did miss some amount of vertical progression through grind. (And guess what; that doesn’t come from WoW because I’ve never played it for more than 3 hours)

Either way,
I played in Rares for quite a while before I geared up with full exotics and even the difference in those tiers is not game-breaking.

If people are going to leave the game over this,
Then the best I can be is relieved that there will be less QQers around.

Whether the ascended armor ends up having actual stat increases over exotics,
Or whether it does end up being similar to the GW1 and Infused armor for the muursat (Holy balls, I hated the Muursat)
I’ll be satisfied.
I’m looking forward to the content update quite a bit.

I really wish the forums had a downvote button.

All we have right now, guys, is intentionally vague information from two different third-party sources. Nothing from ANet at all.

Don’t get me wrong; I do not want a gear treadmill, but I’m also not going to go ballistic before I see what ANet is actually doing with this.

“Slightly more powerful” does not necessarily mean higher stats. It very well could be that the “infusion” slot is the only tangible difference between exotic and ascended. We simply do not know, so there is absolutely no reason to fly off the handle yet.

These are all very good points. I think ArenaNet badly overestimates the maturity of the people who post on their forums. Before, during, and after every change, I see the same couple of dozen people on here complaining, moaning, throwing themselves at the fainting couches , and threatening to quit.

It’s somewhat amusing that people bother to spend their time that way, but mostly, I feel pity for them. It can’t feel good to constantly upset yourself over a game.

The Ascended armor is a rewards for completing very difficult paths of the new dungeon.

It will NOT be required to do the previous dungeons, it’s only a stat boost because THE DUNGEON GETS HARDER. Thus, you get better gear rewards. Why? Because how are you expected to complete such harder content with gear that wasn’t balanced for the content that they’re creating now? I doubt their intent was to ever make the PVE this difficult, but they wanted to appeal to the hardcore PVErs and since so many complained it wasn’t hard enough. Which it wasn’t.

Yes, they could technically give you artificial “buffs” the farther you progress in the new dungeon. But how many would complain “lack luster rewards for beating the hardest dungeon?”

I mean, don’t even worry about it. I doubt 70% of the people posting in this thread will even see the end of the hardest route. Then the complaints will be “it’s too hard, we can’t get max gear!”

Since I do not like to do the dungeon/5-man thing in any MMO I will be a second rate citizen from now on. At least in Rift you can grind out Sourcestones in Instant Adventures and work your way to very powerfull gear that way.

I am not against powercreep, I am against the fact that they tie it to a certain playstyle (dungeons, Raids).

Since I love doing DE’s in the open world, I wish you could earn that gear in that way too. And stating that I do not need the extra power since I will not set foot in a dungeon anyway is not true: I certainly would welcome a little extra power when doing certain DE’s in Orr!

Nope what is currently in game is not a gear treadmill. At least not one that is required to do content. What this proposes IS a gear treadmill for without it apparently you won’t get further than a specific point.

When gear is needed to advance to new content you are talking about a gear treadmill. As it stands everything in game now is doable in even masterwork gear so no gear treadmill.

This is a good thing.

Don’t want to grind for acended gear? Here’s a tip: Don’t.

Why should all the players that want to keep striving for something be hobbled by the compulsively completist players among us?

Here’s another tip: This isn’t Pokemon, and you don’t have to catch them all.

One thing that bothered me in all the years I played GW1, was that there wasn’t “slightly” better equipment beyond a simple skin. I didn’t like the fact that you could buy a blue level 20 from a city vendor that had the exact same stats as the cool 100K+100e item that you found or bought.

Again….this is a good thing. Slightly, is slightly. You’re not going to miss out on much by not reaching for the top tier gear. If you don’t want the gear but feel compelled to acquire it….go see a doctor. You need help beyond what a game update can do for you.

As person totally and vigorously opposed to gear treadmills – this would be acceptable. If they added a stat to this set that would be totally and absolutely useless anywhere outsides of the instance it came from AND if NO other stat on this gear would be better than Exotics, I’d be fine with it.

However, this is a purely academic question, as I have never seen it done that way in any game ever.

I’m not saying I’m quitting and I’m quite willing to give the devs a chance and see where this goes, but the core customer base of loyal Guildwars players expect better than to have their loyalty mean nothing to the developers. Guildwars succeeded so well simply because it was the one game that was skill based. If you reward “the stronger, better players” with gear with better stats that completely obliterates the skill base of the game. That said I obviously don’t have a problem grinding for gear as most of my 11 GW 1 characters had between 3 and 5 sets of elite armor each, but every single piece had the same stats as the other pieces and that my friends is what Guildwars is about to the core loyal player base.

You dont get it do you?

All people cry here about is AREANET just broke their promises. Every experienced mmorpg player knows that the most improtant thing about the game is company. If you cant believe company, you cant believe the game.

If ANET could still introduce armor progression after reading this thread, then I don’t know who exactly is their target market.

On the other hand, it could be like “Infused” armor from GW1, or they could be introducing something like an Insignia slot? If the armor was only usable in that one dungeon, then it would be ok. Maybe we will see Mursaat with Spectral Agony? That would be cool!

I’m all for having more gear to grind for. I was getting bored of just farming for aesthetics.

While I will try to hold up making any opinion on the ascended gear until I can get any reliable and solid info on how exactly is the ascended gear better than exotic, I can’t help but feel disappointed by the news.

I was really hoping GW2 would put the end to gear grind, but already – and just 3 months after release – gear grind is sweeping into the gameplay. It doesn’t matter how “little better” the new gear is, it only influences the extent of gear grind.

And I don’t care what other games have, if I liked other games, I would be playing them.

i have no intention of upgrading all the exotic armor i got for my 5 level 80s just a few months after the game launched.. if that is indeed your plan ANET… cut it out! it’s nonsense.

ArenaNET:

I played World of Warcraft for a long time and the number one complaint that I always had was this: when you level a new character and reach max level, you have to get the “low” tier of gear (let’s call it T9) before you can get the “higher” tier of gear (T10) before you can get the “heroic higher” tier of gear (T10H). So to be able to play your max level character, you had to grind a dungeon/raid that nobody played anymore except on alts, then you had to grind the non-heroic new dungeon, and then you could play the heroic version (which, inevitably, is where all the serious players are by the time an alt hits max level). So for me to play with my friends, with the people I wanted to play with, I had to beg them to step down (and waste time) to play the older dungeon with me because PUGs were useless.

I bought GW2 and am buying my s.o. GW2 because, like GW1, GW2 wasn’t supposed to be like that. If that is no longer the case, then I will not be buying him GW2. I may not buy extra character slots as I had planned. What’s the point of having eight characters if I can’t have eight characters that are able to play their level-appropriate content without getting new gear (excepting the case where they don’t have level-appropriate gear). With a gear treadmill in place I will have to do what I described about WoW for your game. And if so, I will probably never participate in new content.

If you do this, you are punishing your casual players. I simply do not have the time to grind gear; I don’t even have a single level 80 yet. If you do this, by the time I have a level 80 (unless I power level, which makes me say: why not WoW?) I will have to start a gear grind. No thank you. Just give us new skins, please. Perhaps have different stats, such as combinations of stats that you can’t currently get, but don’t make them more powerful. I loved GW1 because it was all about content and different skins. I hated WoW because it was about the numbers. If I start to have to look up “which armor is best” instead of “which looks best”, I will stop playing this game and I will be very disappointed.

Yes, GW2 needed this!

In WvWvW, have the bonus stats be on a 3-5 min CD that can be activated.

Just out of curiosity…. if this dungeon offers a “gear treadmill” but is totally contained within the dungeon itself, meaning none of the “extra stats” earned work anywhere except in the dungeon, how many people would be opposed to this?

As person totally and vigorously opposed to gear treadmills – this would be acceptable. If they added a stat to this set that would be totally and absolutely useless anywhere outsides of the instance it came from AND if NO other stat on this gear would be better than Exotics, I’d be fine with it.

However, this is a purely academic question, as I have never seen it done that way in any game ever.

Having stats contained to that dungeon alone will be acceptable to me as well. I sincerely hope this is what Ascended armor is going to be.

Has anyone considered this might be a balance thing?

The forums are still full of people that cannot do a dungeon to save their lives. QQ about Lupicus and Alpha on a daily basis and can’t walk around Orr without getting omg-wtk smacked down.

Plainly, the majority of players just aren’t getting as good as Anet expected them to get. Too many habits from other games and failure to adapt.

So how do you help those people along without nerfing the entire game? Add a new tier of gear to shoot for and make the current top tier more accessible to help that base of players while adding some more difficult content on the top end for the more skilled base of players.

This doesn’t mean a new tier of gear is going to be coming every patch. GW had the same base stats on gear for SEVEN years. I’m sure this isn’t a decision they just idly came buy without a litany of reasons behind it.

People should stop counting their chickens and see how all of this ends up working.

Why does any of this matter? It’s as if you think there’s some statistical advantage in getting this new “slightly better than exotic” item when you’re downleveled to 35 doing AC.

It’s all speculation as to what’s being added anyway. It may just be a new jewel, or a backpiece that’s exotic (since there are none).

If they introduce an item that’s “slightly better than exotic” that no one has the equivalent of an exotic for, then it’s fine. Exotic Jewelry hasn’t even been an accessible item in dungeons or drops, so look out for those maybe? I’d bet on that or gems going along with infusion slots.

“Slightly better” IMO resonates to mean gems that are slightly better, as they talk about infusion slots.

If it turns into some type of mini gear upgrade, I’m okay with that honestly.

I like how they knew this would create buzz and said it specifically like that to generate it. Ragetastic.
