No for any kind of gating system (which infusion sounds like).

Not really happy about a new tier of armour either, but it’s not the end of the world.

While I can understand some people being cautious about this addition I don’t really see what the fuss is about.
We have no idea how this is actually going to be implemented until it goes live so quit the doomsaying and start kittening when you have some more concrete reasons to do so.

what i mean as in stat budged in the equipment,
For example a exotic MF legging as stats as follows;
48 power
48 pre
%3 MF
But exotic Knights gear has following stats,
48 power
48 pre
67 Toughness

you see you are giving up 67 toughness on leggings to get %3 MF , thats called stats budged.

It’s a RING…and BACKPIECE…my god, chill.

If you think this is gating, perhaps infusing armor in GW1 to handle the Mursaat was also gating…though I’m SURE that most of you wouldn’t think that.

they will add full armor and weapon too learn to read.

people are not complaining about infusion but about higher stats on these items than exotics have.

In gw 1 they had same stats

btw @wouw who said ascendent armor and weapons wont have runes and sigil slots ?

There is no indication that Ascended items will be available through crafting, other than back items through the Mystic Forge.

This Guild Wars 2 community makes me sick. Look at how you are all acting! Your behaving like pathetic spoilt children.

They have NOT broken any promises introducing Ascended gear, this is not a “gear treadmill” and it is not even a grind!

They are introducing TWO new items with this patch, a ring and a backpiece, the majority of you complainers will easily get those items within hours of the dungeon opening and you can all go back to your simple boring lifes until they introduce two more Ascended items a few months from now.

Its TWO items, only two, there is no grind there, stop pretending there is.

Ascended items are here to create the illusion of charector progression, it is gated on purpose so the very large amount of players who do enjoy a more stat increases progression with there hero will be encouraged to keep playing for a longer period of time.

Also, this is where the stat increase ends, if you payed attention to the blog you would noticed that this increase is a once off, yes they did say they would add more Ascended items but there stats what get any bigger than that.

I honestly hope all you complainers stop, take a deep breath, and think for a second instead of raging on the forums.

These changes are now inevitable, it is only TWO items to start with, that wont kill anyone, this wont be the end of the game. Life will continue i promise.

It’s not a grind now, but it will be in the future. Look at the blogpost. This is just the beginning.

“This is just the beginning. In November, we’re only adding the first level of Infusions and Ascended Rings and Back slots, so that leaves us a lot of room to build upon these levels of Item progression in future content. "

“As we release more new end game content in the future, you’ll see more Infusions and Ascended item types being added to the game. Eventually, you’ll be able to kit yourself out with a full set of Ascended gear and high end Infusions to help give you the edge in end game content.”

They completly crushed their old item philosophy. It’s the beginning, the start of a treat mill and they start the hard way of making GW2 a random MMO waste.

Yeah… so you should really re-read what you quote before you post it next time because you just made yourself look stupid and provided evidence to support me.

I did. More than one time. Your post and the blogpost. Than my post. I think you just don’t understand what “breaking promises” means for the future. I think you don’t understand that the gear treat mill won’t come with the next patch but will come with future patches as the coming patch is just the start.

OMG PPL
its not better buy “3 precision”. Its better buy 8%. Its a lot.
Second if they intruduce ascended armors = armors get more defense. New weapons = more weapon damage. Better stats are making those difference even higher.

Its like rare vs exotic. Only a moron can tell that there is no difference at all.

Currently players are able to complete ALL content in the game without using Exotics. Exotics just make life slightly easier. This is not the definition of a requirement, it is the definition of player choice. This will be the same.

edit: regards to outside the dungeon that is. Inside of the dungeon, stats will be meaningless as we’re all going to be in different gear anyway, just with 1 or 2 items the same, at the start.

Read the blog post: You won’t be able to clear the new dungeon unless you have Ascended Gear.

In addition: No mechanic needs better gear, everything you can think of can be done with exotics, we don’t need higher stats to make new mechanics work. Higher stats only allow higher numbers, that’s all.

It’s an artificial way of increasing and scaling difficulty across the multiple (unlimited) runs. The stats will be the same, they can’t simply incrementally change the mobs on the fly as that’s harder to balance than having one single mechanic that affects everyone equally. The stat increase can be taken or left. It’s negligible.

I read the blog post – it’s clear to me that the first run will probably not even require the Agony-resists, and that the new gear is a requirement after the first few scaled runs. Else they’d give us a whole set straight off the bat.

It depends on how you define “run”. For me a “run” incluedes completing everything in the dungeons, and, as they told us, this won’t be possible unless you have Ascended Gear and Infusions. This wouldn’t be a problem if you would get those gear automatically just by doing the dungoen, as I mentioned above. But since you will have to grind for it, it really sucks and breaks one of Arena Nets basic promises.

In a nutshell: They kittened it up and pissed of a lot of their most faithful fans. But they still have time to change that.

This is from mmorpg.com so make of it what you will. But it says that you are able to complete runs just as you would any normal dungeon, but after that, they scale in difficulty.

Once people understand this, then they will see how Agony truly works and how it is not a gate for entry, it is simply a way of artifically increasing difficulty.

quote follows:

The ‘Fractals of the Mist’ dungeon is a result of all the lessons ArenaNet has learned from developing the game’s initial dungeon offerings as well as the feedback they’ve received from players on dungeon content since launch. Players will enter the Fractals of the Mist dungeon via a central hub that will feature an assortment of amenities such as repair NPCs and other merchants. Once players have gathered their party members, they will be launched into one of the nine ‘fractals’ that will be randomly selected for each group.

Each fractal’s experience will be similar to that of the various mini-dungeons littered throughout the open world of Guild Wars 2. These fractals will feature a variety of challenges, puzzles, and boss fights, with an emphasis placed on use of the environment.

Players can expect each fractal to take anywhere from 15 to 40 minutes to complete and the game will throw you through a series of three fractals, from one to the next, before returning you to town. Every other set of three fractals that players complete will initiate a special boss fight along the lines of Tequatl the Sunless or The Shatterer.

Once players return to town, future entries into the dungeon will scale to become harder than the last. The amount of enemies players will face will increase as will their health and damage, for example. Of course, you can also expect commensurate rewards for completing harder versions of the dungeon.

Speaking of rewards, the Fractals of the Mist Dungeon will introduce the new ‘Ascended’ item type. This type is a bit more powerful than the Exotic quality items currently found in the game. There will only be a couple of Ascended quality items available initially, but some of the rarer Ascended items will also feature a new Infusion slot that will make players even more powerful so that they can tackle new challenges that ArenaNet plans to throw at them as they continue to expand on the dungeon over the coming months and years.

Did you miss the part where they said they will continue to expand it and eventually you will able to have a full kit of Ascended items?

And of course the same folks that had full exotics a few days after the game went live will have them in a few days (unless they make them achievable only to a minority, which is probably worse).

No i did not miss that part but clearly you missed that part where i mentioned that in my post!

Yes they will add more Ascended gear, i said that allready, but the stats wont increase, this is NOT a gear treadmill, this is not like WoW, this is not the end of the world.

This is a once off thing to keep a overwhelming majority of players happy.

The question is why even bother adding a new tier of items?

If there is need for infusion (which is a silly mechanic designed to make you needed items) why not making current items infusable (you need to do quests to make the items infusable) couple with whatever process you acquire the actual infuses?

This just adds more grinding.

A once off thing until they get full ascended items and start asking for more powerful items.

Meanwhile casual players went from having max stats items in a few months to not having max stats.

Ascended items are Anet biggest mistake and a kneejerk reaction.

And BTW talk to us like adults please. Do not be disrespectful

26% you say. Not sure how you came down to that percentage, but the exotic ring stat total is 133 and the ascended ring total is 146, that’s less than a 10%. Or maybe my math is off. :P

Adding only these few items make it seem like a test run. Once the content is released, and it’s really bad, then we can vent, and the situation can still be salvaged.

This new level of gear represents a change in philosophy from what was in the Manifesto to being WoW Junior.

We don’t need to make mandatory gear treadmills, we make all of it optional

I cant wait for this now. I will use this to my advantage in PvP to kick butt and all those who dont have the time will be left behind.
Exit the grind for looks enter the grind for power. About time Anet however my old guildies still arent coming back.

Okay bro, enjoy your 2% crit rate chance increase, a bit of extra power and some useless MF if you’re looking to get the one they previewed.

Is not as simple. The pic they show is only an example. Sure it will be with all other sets (berseker, carrion…etc). And is not only 1. 2 rings so you multiply for 2 the slightly increase. Plus backpack. 3. In the future they say it will come new items, so continue multiplying.

Yeah you have a point, maybe 2 points or 4 more in a stat is not important. But tomorrow with 8 or 9 items more, is an important difference. It is supposed that stats are going to work outside the dungeon too. Infusions are only for dungeon so no prob here.

MMO needs progression. If not, it’ll die as a limited game with no growth.

The philosophy is just you making it up.
You perceived their philosophy in the wrong way to begin with.

You’re wrong: GW1 didn’t die, it was prospering. It didn’t even die after they stopped adding new content, and one of the reasons behind this is because it didn’t have gear grind, but other things to offer.

ANet was pretty vocal about their philosophy during the whole deveolopment period so no, we did not percieve it wrong, they’ve changed it drasticlly.

“Otherwise, your MMO becomes all about grinding to get the best gear. We don’t make grindy games.”

They still live by their philosophy. Why can’t you guys see that?
More importantly, what are you guys afraid of?

GW2: Ascended gears are just another tier. It’s not a requirement to have it to experience any future new content X/Y/Z. You can have fun with all in-game content and dungeons with any tier equipments. You don’t need to grind to experience content X/Y/Z.

Traditional MMO: Better gears are needed to experience new contents, story in PVE and raids. Those gears are a mandatory requirement to reap the fun of the the new content X/Y/Z. Players are forced to grind just to experience newer content.

They are so different.
Yet, it ponders me why can’t people see it.

You dont get it do you, current ascendent gear will last for how long ? 3 months? year?

Then they introduce even more poverful ascendent gear so its start again. THis is not their philosophy..

Guild Wars philosophy = you obtained best gear (aka exotic) and there will never ever better gear. stat wise. Even after 7years the armor you equiped at release, was the best.

Every player was equal, WvW vs PvE players, those who dont likes dungeons had the same gear in wvw like those who runs dungeon only.
After this update, those who run dungeons and have ascendent gear, they will have advantage over those who dont, in wvw .. .DO YOU GET IT?

The prime stat on the shows rings were MF guys , %3 mf increase worth more or less like 40-50 of any other stat, or %3 crit dmg . So the stat diference is not so low at all.

1 amulet 2 rings and 2 earings and a backpiece thats in total +%18 more Crit Dmg then wearin all exotics, and thats only the jewelery.

Atm Max you can get from Jewelery is %33 crit dmg, so basicly you are increasing your crit dmg about %64

how is that for a stat increase

not able to add runes, orbs or sigils to these items make you more PRO?

The stats is just ONE problem.
Another one is “Restricted Content” = bad idea (If you have multiple alts, you can see the problem in the long run)

BTW : Your argument is a fallacy Ad Hominem

the same “restricted content” was in GW1
to progress more into the story you HAD to infuse your armor

You did not have to grind to infuse your armor. You did it as a side quest in one of the normal missions. If you got new armor, you could easily go back and do the one easy mission to infuse the next armor.

Make it buyable with karma/badges/gold or not usable in wvswvsw or you will loose many pvp players.

They are adding 200 crafting recipes also… who says you just have to run dungeons?

See this type of knee jerk reaction is why we have a 50 page thread…..

That’s not the point. What if every major update they’re adding 200 more crafting recipes for the next highest level of gear to grind for? I don’t want to keep having to make new crafts just to be able to play in the newest dungeons. I want to make crafts because it’s fun, not because it makes me more powerful. It’s still a tiered, gear treadmill…IF this is indeed what they plan on doing.

Up to this point it was said “It will be fine, stop complaining about things you don’t know about”. Now that we do know about it, it’s exactly what I feared it would be.

Guild Wars 1 did not need a gear treadmill to be successful, why would the sequel need to pick up such archaic practices from a dying genre of MMOs. It’s painfully obvious that this is becoming less and less “Guild Wars 2” and more a generic MMO.

They have added a gear treadmill, forced a singular play style on players, and created a gating mechanic forcing players to do certain things and have certain things in order to experience new content. So, in short, they’ve added pretty much everything I hated about other MMOs all in one patch.

They are adding a mechanic which has failed miserably and been removed from multiple other high-profile games in the genre… in direct contradiction of their own principles and philosophy. It boggles the mind how bad this is. It is a horrible decision in every possible way.

It’s very likely that future content will require even more of this gating mechanic, which means more and more of the content that ArenaNet creates will be inaccessible to players who do not wish to climb on the treadmill.

I just spent all my money getting exotic gear. For a few brief, shining moments, I didn’t have to worry about gear and could just enjoy the game and all its content and have fun playing. Now…that’s over. Probably for good. I’m extremely disappointed, and I’m staring at a game that will be much less fun for me from now on.

I don’t want to grind. I have no desire to farm. But now I find out that I will be missing out on more and more new content if I don’t choose to play in a way I hate. I will fall farther and farther behind the power curve against other players in WvW. In short…I have no choice anymore. This is exactly what made me leave previous MMORPGs… the bait and switch at endgame and the lack of choices.

As I said in earlier posts in this thread, ArenaNet is doing this solely to chase a group of players who are never going to be satisfied or happy, and are unlikely to come back to the game no matter what. ArenaNet is sacrificing their dedicated and die-hard fan base for nothing.

I will now be faced with a decision every day… “is this game still worth playing?” I’ve lost a substantial amount of motivation and desire to log in, and as more and more of this crap gets added, I’m just not sure how I’ll answer that question.

Agreed, it´s fact that they will expand on the Agony/Infusion Mechanic.

Which will be useless outside of the Fractal Dungeon.
A dungeon specifically designed as a rattrap for all the lunatics that already managed to grind out a Legendary or two.

So far I see ANet only adapting to the lunatic grinding fringe. Nothing more and nothing less.

You do know that you can’t clear the new dungeon right? It’s infinite. Each level consists of 3 mini-dungeons chosen from a pool of 9 (with a boss every 2 levels), and you don’t need infusion till much later on. You can see all the content without touching infusion.

That’s not how it reads. Yes, we can’t really “clear” the dungeon but we can see and beat all mobs that can spawn in it. And, as they clearly stated, to do so we will need Ascended Gear. And that’s where they kittened it up.

I just assumed that because it’s a different selection of mini-dungeons each time you try it, with a random boss at even-numbered levels, you’d be able to see everything even if you only replayed the first two levels enough times. And naturally the starting levels can’t require Ascended.
I might have missed something on the later level generation though …

Your math is off because you are ignoring the MF stats on the gear , which most people ignore for some reason. If it were an other type of gear like knight , you would see the real increase more accurately.

they are adding 3 items, lest assume MF=Crit Dmg in terms of statweight, then you will gain an extra %9 crit dmg just from the patch they are gonna impliment. Assuming you have %80 crit chance like me ,

thats gonna be %7,2 dmg increase , just from 3 items

=> Bump this

Your assumption is that the gear is only available from the dungeon.

Yet people are also saying the dungeon is gated unless you have the gear.

Frankly – and I know no more than the rest of you – I think you’ll be able to get the gear easily enough (with some effort though) OUTSIDE of the dungeon, be it crafting, grinding or w/e, that will give you enough Agony-resist to carry you for a few more scaled runs. By the time you’re sorted and burnt-out on those runs, Anet will release more gear that has more Agony-resist and again a slight bump in stats, and you can then go further with the scaled dungeons.

This, to me, sounds perfectly legitimate and does not put PvPers at a disadvantage, nor does it force people into a treadmill unless they genuinely see the stat increase as massively beneficial, then they are more than welcome to grind or pay for the gear which probably won’t have the same sort of stats you’d want anyway.

They clearly stated you will need the ascended armors to continue on further into the endless dungeon of the fractals. I like the take on the endless dungeon, a bit iffy on the implementation (yet to be seen anyway), but kinda dislike the requirement of the ascended armors. I kinda have an idea that you will start needing the armors after completing level X. From level X to Y, you can still do it in normal exotics, it will just be harder. PAst level Y, it will be an absolute must and there will be no other way of doing it than that.

Don’t disturb me, I have a cat in me at the moment.

why create a whole new gear and not allow us to upgrade the gear we own?

If they have stat bonuses then Anet has made the gear train many do not want. Also if they want to give a wall that surpasses the legendary wall it’s going to be a hell of a long time before 95% of the population attain it.

I’m ok with a couple of power/precision difference shown in the pic, with an upgrade that is dungeon specific in use.

i strongly disagree, the difference between rare and exotic is noticeable. and most players in wvw using green armors? maybe if they still lvl up, but most 80s i know roam around with exotic, and if they got a rare set they really working on their orange. i´m not interested in dungeons(only did 2 runs since headstart) and wont run the new 1, but i want to stay competetive on even ground in wvw, so anet better make the stats same as exotic or makes the new gear really easily obtained, since i spend quite a lot on crafting and buying sets for 2 characters by now and am not interesting in do so again.

People are really so paranoid here. 56 pages.
Don’t worry too much. -_-

MMO needs progression. If not, it’ll die as a limited game with no growth.

The philosophy is just you making it up.
You perceived their philosophy in the wrong way to begin with.

Their philosophy is for you to have fun with every content the game has to offer without grinding. You are still able to experience every content X/Y/Z with a low-tier equipment.

You won’t have advantage towards others.
A fine and exotic don’t even have any notable difference. Do you realise that most of the WvWvW players are using the green masterwork tier? They can beat exotics equally. What difference does ascended makes? Few dozen stats = 1-2% increase in actual combat. You can’t beat someone who are 1-2% stronger than you?

The point is, the game must have progression, even if it’s small numbers.
Dedicated had fun when they go from white to blue. Blue to Green. Green to Yellow. Etc.

So, I guess it was all a lie – you know, the part about “the whole game being the end-game” and the equivalence of level 80 gear. How depressing. Here I have 445 hrs invested in 8 characters, and have spent over $100 in the cash shop for various upgrades (mostly maxing out bank slots), and now I find out ANET has just sold out to become another gear-grind progression WoW clone.

Ironically, now I wish GW2 was a subscription game so I could cancel it. I guess I’ll just satisfy myself with refusing to purchase anything else from ANET.

I’ve been such a huge ANET fan and supporter over the past year or so, writing many columns defending and promoting GW2 at my blog on MMORPG.com. They had a great opportunity to really be different, made all the right promises, then delivered on them and started off so good, and now for whatever reason they just sold out to the progression gamers.

There’s so many ways ANET could have gone in adding new content – there are countless horizontal ideas in the suggestion forum.

What a shame. How utterly disappointing.

Please ArenaNet, adjust ascended gear to be on par with exotics, they’ll still have the infusion slot, but please equalize the gear.

I just can’t stand the moaning that’s taken over the forums.

It’s one of the reasons I couldn’t enjoy Warhammer Online’s PvE either. You needed to have a tier set equal or higher level to the dungeon you were doing or you’d take % based damage increases from the enemies in the dungeon. You could go months (due to lockouts) without getting your tank to have specific armor set piece drops to progress to the next tier.

I didn’t enjoy Infusion in GW1 either. It felt completely unnecessary and a huge waste of time. I wound up having to run halfway across several zones in the Prophecies map, because I wanted to do War in Kryta on a character that didn’t have Prophecies completed just to infuse my armor and it was just a big waste of my time instead of being able to just jump in and enjoy the content without the needless infusion prerequisite.

You made 3 expansions to Prophecies by adding skills, story, classes heroes, content. I purchased, played, and thoroughly enjoyed all of them without needing to grind for new gear. Now, two months in and all of my characters have to get Ascended just to stay up to date.. I will reserve judgment until more detail is released, but at the moment I am very concerned and disappointed. Was actually quite excited to read news about Lost Shores until the Ascended part. 700 Hours later, the dream has come to an end~

What a good show! As for me, I don’t want to conclude and say goodbye in advance just because I read it in the blog or heard people whining about it or whatsoever negative judgment there is. I’m going to wait for the official release date and try to experience it myself first. Then I judge.

Whatever the outcome is, I didn’t lose anything ‘cause I’ve tested the new mechanic hands on and experienced how it will really affect the entire gameplay, rather than just sticking to pure assumptions.

GW2 died on Nov. 13? Hey, the world will end on Dec. 21, 2012 too. Knowing that, are we going to move to another planet now? Lol. xD

why create a whole new gear and not allow us to upgrade the gear we own?

No idea tbh, but i’m assuming that it’s because they figure people who run dungeons are the type of player who are more likely to want new gear with progression.

Although I don’t think it’s unrealistic of them to have some sort of transmutable system in place for current gear once the whole dungeon set has shipped.

No -

Gear progression is what destroyed Everquest 2 and updates like this without community consultancy reminds me of Star Wars Galaxies NGE. What if you don’t have friends to dungeon with? What if your usual dungeon party is missing 1 person and you can’t find anyone to fill it because they don’t have “the right gear” -

Right now I have to say no, I am against this … I also feel heart broken that the developers who have done no big wrong thus far, haven’t involved us in such a game changing decision.

Not to be rude but I really think you need to read the article in question a little more.

They have clearly stated they intend to roll this system out for entire gear sets.

Right back at ya.

As we release more new end game content in the future, you’ll see
more Infusions and Ascended item types being added to the game.
Eventually, you’ll be able to kit yourself out with a full set of Ascended gear and high end Infusions to help give you the edge in end game content.

They will expand the ASCENDED gear slots, only useful for the Fractal dungeon.

So .. problem?
