Just going to spill my mind about the upcoming wardrobe changes. First of all, I agree that there had to be a change towards changing the appearance of lvl 80 gear. That you’ll be able to use your transmutation stones for it in a 3/1 ratio is the part that I agree on. Transmutation crystals weren’t accessible enough (mostly only available through gem store) and the demand of changing the appearance of lvl 80 gear is, let’s say, overwhelming. The difference between the stones and crystals was fine but no-one really used the stones anymore once they reached lvl 80 since, ofcourse, you’d only use lvl 80 gear. This could be easily solved however, by creating a vendor with whom you could exchange stones for crystals in a certain ratio (like for example 3 stones for 1 crystal). So well, I agree in the part to make crystals more accessible, that’s the good call, that they are just going to convert the stones and crystals to cosmetic charges is fine as well, though just a simple vendor would have solved the problem as well.

But now the part where I start to disagree. The idea of unlocking skins is an interesting idea but unlocking all of them permanently without exceptions (apart from the gem store ones ofcourse) is just a little too much. In fact I even disagree with the fact that you won’t have to convert two sets into one anymore but you’ll just be able to paste a skin over the one you like. Part of the fun is the CHOSING what you want. You decide which build you’re going to play, what stats you need for it and then you might look into your cosmetics. You make up your mind, assemble the two sets with stats and cosmetics that you like and you transmute them into your own epic set, yay! You finally achieved your goal after putting the effort into it! Want them on another character as well? Again you have to think if it’s worth it or not, and if it is, you’ll get it again. If you want to play another build in the future, you’ll buy a set with a new stat combination and again, you’ll make the decision if it’s worth to transmute it onto your cosmetic set or make a second nice looking set on that character to keep your options open in the future so you can get back to your old build (since you know how much effort you put into assembling it). Now you’ll just use up some cosmetic charges, paste the skin and done. What did you achieve? Nothing, or well yeah, I got it once so now I can paste it on anything as much as I want. Yay!

Let’s raise the stakes for a second, what about the legendaries and “special” exotic weapons like Infinite light, volcanus, eye of rodgort and all the others? Ever seen a Mesmer with dual infinite light? I did once and I thought kitten , that one had the guts to make two exotics that are almost worth a legendary instead of going for a legendary itself. And how nice and shiny she looked… Nowadays, when you make one of those weapons or a legendary, you have to chose on which character you’re going to put it. Again, the choosing is part of the fun. I made an infinite light and put it on my warrior because it looks really nice with our guild shield. Why didn’t I make two for my mesmer? Because I knew I would be satisfied with having it once. When the update comes around, I’ll just put dual infinite light on my mesmer because well, it’ll only cost me a few cosmetic charges instead of hundreds of charged lodestones. Will I play dual swords a lot? Probably not, but I’ll look great doing so. I’ll probably play dual swords for a week and get back to my usual build after. Why? Because it didn’t take me any effort to make the infinite lights anyway.

Want to raise the stakes even higher? Fine, let’s take it up to bifrost. When I made bifrost, choosing where to put it was as hard as the process of making it. Guard, mesmer, necromancer or elementalist? Hmm, I didn’t really like guard that much at the time and I mainly played greatsword or mace/shield so not on the guard. Mesmer perhaps? I used staff quite a lot to create chaos armor both with the 4-skill and the 2-skill in ethereal fields. My clones would have bifrosts as well so I’d be surrounded by my own wealthy clones, how nice would that be? Nevertheless, I mostly played my necro and my ele at the time so it would be one of those two. The elementalist was my first gw2-experience (I always love magic in any mmo), my first lvl 80 from many more to come, my first of eleven world completions, the one with the character name that’s identical to my account name, the one I play to do dungeons. I played staff and you can’t swap weapons on elementalists so what’s there to hesitate? Well, I barely discovered the true power of a necromancer. It was the character I used to do world bosses, I even granted it a commander tag so I could guide the ones around me from boss to boss. It was the character that was mostly recognized and came into touch with most other people. I mainly played axe/focus and used staff as secondary but what the hell, I could equip it while running for Christ sake! Until the very second I crafted my precious bifrost, I was going to put that white shiny staff on my completely dark/black necro, hell yeah! A minute and a few clicks later to transfer it from one character to another, I soulbound it on my elementalist.

Why you ask? To be honest, at that very moment, I didn’t know it either but after a while, I realised that from the beginning, I always said that one day, I’d have a bifrost on my ele, on the character I started with and experienced all those nice memories. That’s how much a legendary should be worth to you for any character. By now, I’m on my way for my fourth legendary and they’re worth every bit of effort I put into them. And yes, I’d even considerate making a second bifrost for my necromancer.
After the update, me, and everyone else, will be able to put that bifrost skin onto that necro, guard and Mesmer, and second guard, second necro, second ele and so on… but what’s the fun of that? The experience of achieving it will be completely gone and that’s a shame Anet, it truly is…

Pasting worthless skins over one another is fine, I agree with that since it’s not hard to achieve those. But those expensive, hard to get skins shouldn’t be unlocked for all characters if you have it once. The road to getting it, is what actually makes it shine. So let’s keep that bumpy road, filled with gaps and cubbles, ups and downs and keep the satisfaction of actually getting what you want in the end.

The story became quite longer than I expected but I think I’ve made my point by now. The chosing, the sacrificing, it’s part of the game, part of achieving your goal, part of the fun. It’s sad that we’re going to loose this part of the game.

Oh, and FYI, I’m not going to paste those dual infinite lights on my mesmer or any legendaries on other chars. Why? Just because it wouldn’t feel right, I wouldn’t get the satisfaction of wearing them without actually getting them.

So well, i’m wondering if anyone feels the same or if everyone is just blinded by the fact that they can paste their wealthy skins on any character they like?

Yeah, I can see where you’re coming from with this. Ideally I think this should have been applied to actual skins only, and I’m not really in favour of turning everything into a skin. Some things should be earned – Legendaries and Dungeon gear in particular.

However, I’m still going to make use of the system. I’ve wanted to equip my Mesmer with Lyss for months now but the cost was too prohibitive. Now that I can not only give it to him but have my Thief wield it as well, its a definite buy.

Actually i’m quite concerned about the impact on the market too. No more buying jormags breath x2 or any other exotic you like the look of. Buy one, arm 8 chars with the same skin after the one purchase. going to be a bit of a surplus of some items on the tp.

I wondered about this as well, I suspect there’ll be a MASSIVE spike in mid-high tier exotic weapon prices following the patch.
