What’s the reasoning behind things being “general-time-gated” instead of “amount-of-free-time-gated”?

My friend with leukemia wanted to craft legendary armor but I’m not sure if it will be possible.

Value.

The value of an item is determined by many factors. Time gating an item increases its value in the form of patience and time.

Rich people who spend thousands can easily get an item that isn’t time gated, but by time gating it there is a certain quality to that specific item that increases its worth.

For example look at the backpieces for the new LS3 maps. The Wayfarer’s Henge feels a lot more precious to me than the other backs, partly due to the aesthetic but mainly because of the length of time required to get the Henge (16 days).

I’m really sorry for your friend, hope he/she gets better.

arbitrary hard time gates dont make things feel precious to me, they just turn me off to the game in general.

It’s definitely a subjective feeling. Personally, I appreciate time gates because they space out content in balanced distributions, instead of doing everything all at once.

Imagine doing 64 Renown Hearts in one day, hardcore grinders wouldn’t mind something like that.

The best thing in that case would be not to have achievements and quests that require you to do the same heart quests 64 times. Instead, we could have versatile content that requires you to be really dedicated to a quest, maybe one that requires you to use your brain instead of doing the same thing over and over again with an artificial time gate in between.
Something that wouldn’t be easily solved with the help of a guide (randomized) so that you have to think on your own. Every day you could progress a little further since it would take some time to solve it.

There is a time gate but it has also been known for a long time that these would be required….

Also that is probably one of the most offensive way to frame a post.

Time-gates are a part of MMO’s which are used to extend content. This is very similar to the role that ‘grind’ plays.

Anet knew what they were doing when they added the time-gate for the backpack collection. It kept players coming back to the map rather than it becoming a low population one after only a few days. There really isn’t an alternative that would satisfy that goal.

Having it be something that requires personal skill, which you do every day to progress a little further, is no different than having it behind four hearts. A time-gate is a time-gate.

Just because something requires time to do, doesnt mean its time gated. A time gate isnt a skill gate.

Nowhere did I say that they were the same.

I personally, strongly dislike time-gates. It doesn’t feel unique or well worth the time, in most cases. I started crafting the legend only to reach a point to realise I needed another 2 months of time-gate garbage, or buy it. I chose the latter. Its definitely subjective, there is no value to me when something is gated, and feels more tacked on to keep “player numbers up”
