First of all, let me just thank Arenanet for making the best MMORPG out there right now. I think the game is outstanding, and I am entitled to no better.

That being said, are there any other Thief players out there that have a lot of trouble fighting underwater?

Part of the problem for me is the fact that I’m geared towards condition damage. The skills with the spear actually seem to be quite strong, but I don’t think I really have the power/precision to make the most of them. Using the harpoon gun can be good in some situations, but it’s awfully hard to control the direction of your kiting, and thus can get you in a lot of trouble by pulling in too many mobs. Not to mention, compared to my double-dagger build on land, the DoTs applied by the harpoon gun are pretty pitiful. It takes much much longer to burn down a group of enemies using DoTs in the water than it does on land.

The other problem is that being underwater cuts three-quarters of my Thief’s trick repertoire out of the equation, and the ones that are left to me seem pretty useless. For example, the only trick available on my 0 trick slot is basilisk venom…that’s a 1.5 stun on a 45 second cooldown. How does this even qualify as a high-tier trick?

The bottom-line is that I hate feeling like I have to fight with one arm behind my back every time I need to go underwater. I don’t believe this is what ArenaNet intended, either. Is there something I’m missing? Anyone agree with me, or have any tips or suggestions? Thanks in advance

Like all thief builds, just spam 1 button til victory. In this case, its spear #5. You’ll be invulnerable 95% of the time.

That. Using spear 5 plus your dodges makes you untouchable. With certain traits you can keep it up indefinitely

I guess this kind of works, spamming the “3” button (block/retaliate) is also pretty strong but without a power/precision build it takes a long time to wear down an enemy. Not to mention that spamming a single skill is the least fun way to play.

Underwater combat is a pretty common complaint from condition thieves. The harpoon gun is the “condition” option but even that is better used in the hands of a power spec.

Its the way the thief class was designed. It might not have been intentional, but when you create a combat system where you have 0 cool downs, its really the most efficient way to play. Find the most powerful skill at your disposal and just spam it until everything is dead.

Spear #3. It’s all you need.
