Some love it and some hate it. No one can decide but you if you like it. Watch some youtube videos of some people from both sides of the coin to see whats there and what they say. It may help you.

EDIT: I do have it. I bought the Ultimate version for $100. I am having a blast with it. I knew going in that there would be unlocking of WPs, HPs and MPs.

If you only want elite specialization then don’t bother

If you want to see the new map and explore the answer is yes

If you want a great personal story then the answer is also yes

I’d suggest doing a bit more research.

There are a lot of threads and youtube videos concerning the release issues people have as well as the things they are loving. It’s really a subjective call based on what your into. It’s not a requirement so if you have goals in the core you could focus on those and save a few pingers or if not dive straight in.

Either way gl & hf.

I bought HoT today and I haven’t played gw2 in a while now.. I hoped back in was a but overwhelmed from all the things but soon adjusted .. Went to the new zone and ended up playing for 9 hrs … Was a lot of fun reminds me of launch…. Except was really challenging. The zones are huge and very detailed and so pretty. It feels like a war zone and can sense the danger and threat everywhere. I thought I was safe at a waypoint but it got attacked by fire breathing leafy things so I lay dead while afk hehe.

Also I was able to unlock my elite quite quickly as I had points left dunno how tbh. Though I had only 1 trait unlocked and got the weapon for it from the system itself the moment I unlocked it…was pretty neat. Even though I had one trailine completely empty.. I did not feel kitten and felt really satisfying .. And the more hero points I was accumulating the more I felt o could unlock and progress
Dunno about others I kind of like the whole building up as you play and not use everything already unlocked stuff. I started on my necro now a reaper. Loving it.

I hated the 1st map, mostly because i didn’t have the unlocks needed to transverse the map or know where the kitten i was. But now that i have seen all four maps, and have 3 in gliding and 2 in the rest i am having a much better time. The second map in HoT -Auric Basin- is worth $100 all by itself. Its the most beautiful thing that has ever happened in gaming. Get yourself an updated graphics card and a wide monitor because this is gonna blow your mind, as soon as you get over needing ascended everything and need to grind out some unlocks so your character can transverse the hard terrain. It gets better the longer you play it, it was designed that way. Story is just awesome so far, i don’t want to hear people complain that haven’t even gotten past Verdant Brinks.

I am not buying it at the moment because from my own research the expac doesn’t seem very solo/casual play friendly right now. That plus not getting a character slot for the new profession makes it a no-go for me.

Yeah I’m on that page. Put a few hours in on my girlfriends account and decided to hold off based on my first impression and wait for a sale and a few patches to drop and see what they may change or address for more solo-minded players like me. In saying she has a far larger in-game social network than me so she’s having a blast. I deal with people all day at work so I’m more reclusive in my play-style and prefer games that cater to this as it’s what I find more relaxing and enjoyable.

My local game shop always has cheap MMO’s a month or two after release, they always seem to over-purchase copies, and I’d rather decide then than invest time and full price now for a second copy. Besides I’m fine with core for now and Fallout 4 will be taking up most of my time. No need to pay that much when I won’t even have the time to play it anyway.

I’m also really gutted they restricted the veteran character slot to pre-purchase. Hope they change this, pretty insulting they used it as merely more pre-purchase bait and left those playing since launch that didn’t want to purchase before release with nada. I have no issue with pre-purchase incentivisation but this was handled pretty poorly imo.

Give it a month and see if they fix their kittenup with the gating of content. If they haven’t fixed it by then, they never will – despite the fact that nobody is happy with their grindfest design for this garbage.

That’s my plan – despite the prepurchase, I’ve lost any faith in Anet. If they don’t fix this – I’m gone.

If you intense like action, group content, challenge and stuff that requires you to carefully choose skills, traits, stats, weapons, strategy and etc – buy it.

If you are a casual who likes to mindlessly run after zerg and single commander, and you only press skill number “1” 95% of the time or just afk during events – then don’t buy it.

Ok, well I could say much as I haven’t passed Verdant Brink yet (the first of the new maps) and I haven’t explored much Masteries and stuff, but I could see they have done a good work so far, generally speaking. It has flaws, of course, but it has several nice points too. If it worth that price? Hard to evaluate for me, due to reasons I mention below and I haven’t seen much to tell if it worth, but I have liked the most of what I have seen so far.

I’m also really gutted they restricted the veteran character slot to pre-purchase. Yeah, that’s my only complaint so far that it didn’t feel much fair to vet players. They kind of overpriced it for vet players while making it cheaper for new players (yes, it felt like vet players ended paying more, although vet players had things that new ones will never had, but even so..), also that slot was only after a big protest, they didn’t intend to give it at first.

Depends on how much you value that 199.00 of your currency.

If that’s the equivalent of a night out or a dinner for you, and something you would do now and again, I’d say go for it. The jungle is pretty awesome, and there’s not a whole lot going on in vanilla GW2.

You can always wait for the price to drop if money’s an issue, but prepare to be utterly bored.

I won’t tell you yes or no to buying it because I’m still trying to decide if it was worth the money I spent. One piece of advice, if/when you do buy it don’t go out to grind masteries and hero points. Just run around doing events and your story or whatever and you will enjoy it more.

My suggestion is to wait for a sale. By that time, we’ll have raids and whatnot. As it is now, the expansion is just SW 2.0. At it’s current state HoT is not worth the price tag.

I’m enjoying my purchase, but I did only get it yesterday. A fair bit is gated behind exp (masteries) so you have to keep that in mine. Also, people are unhappy with how Daredevil turned out, though I’m personally sticking it out. I still find thief condi builds to be fairly strong in pve. Also, gliding is pretty dang fun. The incentive to do old and new world stuff for the masteries is a nice change of pace too.

It should also be noted, your character has a voice again! Oh god, I was so freaking happy to hear my gruff Charr again! My vow of silence has finally ended!

Thats it, i bought HoT, its indeed awesome!!! One thing, I was with such an adrenaline in my heart, that when i clicked on the Daredevil Staff to see it, i choose the stats wrong, got the Ministrel while i wanted the Marauder -_-… opened a ticket, hope they undo this for me.

But in overall, loving the xpac, really a beauty, tho i’m still kinda lost with masteries, i can’t use the glinder yet, such dazed and confused with the vertical gameplay now.

Personally, I’m not paying $50+ for a tiny bit of new maps and a personal story update so I’m waiting until HoT goes on sale.

Raiding, Specializations, Masteries, etc. are all things that would have been added for free if people hadn’t kept asking for an expansion, so I’m not interested in paying extra for them (especially since I’m not even interested in most of them).

I wasnt convinced about the features being worth 40€ before release and after hearing other peoples feedback it only made it seem worse.

Still i thought: hey i guess i ll buy it eventually and ANET has reduced the amount of hero points needed for elites so i might as well get it now and play a bit before Fallout 4 comes out but then i found these numbers:
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Heart_of_Maguuma_mastery_tracks
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Central_Tyria_mastery_tracks

How can anyone claim this is not a grindfest? ~10M xp per track, 80M total – 314 levels at lvl 80, 20 characters to 80 or about 8000 events. And if i understood it correctly attainable only by doing new content. Not to mention the gated storyline.

Though I know this, I must say I find HoT enjoyable. now some changes have been made I’m completely happy. The maps are huge (yes HUGE, I need ~20-30 min to map a old map, I’m still looing to clear maps in the expansion after quie some time in.) and the content even while gated for some prt Is making th maps interesting to play. The maps are liek silverwastes in their setup with map wide meta events and a HUGE amount of minor quests and tasks, all building up to the meta events. The specialisations are now easier to unlock, and the masteries while having unlocks behind a fair wall of XP are very nice….. I enjoy playing the new maps and Hope to enjoy the new stats in the near future when I’ll shift focus back to fractals, and other things I like.

As always, I am glad I wait for full release to get a sense of how things actually are instead of pre-ordering and getting kittened.

HoT has very little content (three new maps and an elite specialization… that’s it!) and clearly Anet realized this because they tried to extend the life of the new maps (which are literally empty minus event trains) by turning them into repetitive grind fests and forcing you to repeat the same thing over and over to unlock the elite spec.

Once you get the elite spec you just play that through the same old content again. There’s no new dungeons, there’s no new fractals, there’s a god awful new WvW map that is already dead and it’s been what? less than a week?

Then of course you have guild halls… idk why people want these as there’s nothing to do in them. What do you even do here? decorate it? “hang out”?

And lastly we have raids… well actually we don’t have raids yet because Anet ripped HoT out of the womb several months early but they’re totally coming! and they’re totally going to be great? How great raids are remains to be seen. Even though HoT is released… you’re still taking a preorder gamble on promises.

Bristleback can’t hit anything? Let’s fix the HP bug instead.

Basically , yes, it’s worth it.

1. very well designed new maps.
2. new, more challenging mobs with different mechanics.
3. new event chains that lead up to a new “end event”
4. specializations that are now affordable (250 hero points)
5. a great storyline with some good voiceacting
and , best of all, gliding.

Most will say that the rewards are less then before, but unless you play this game pure for the drops (which are imo not bad at all), the pro’s outweigh any cons you might find.

I’d say, get it to have some more fun, i think it’s def. worth it. Unless you hate PvE and only do WvW.

Indeed, and the negativism dont affect everyone since the important thing is not “having this, lacking that”, but to have fun!

I feel that i didnt waste money, and im having a good time in the game, same when i had back on release, the new content has TONS of things to do that im totally lost with all the new stuff.

For the people that didnt like HoT, im sorry for you, maybe its time to play something else, or just give time for devs to implement raids and whatever is missing.
