Today isn’t your day.
Tomorrow isn’t looking too good either.

So having finally broken free of the grip of WoW and been turned off by ESO, I’m finally sitting down to enjoy and play GW2…..3 years after I got the game. Especially odd, considering I loved the first GW.
What I’m deciding though is what to finish leveling first; my Thief or my Elementalist. Since I haven’t figured out a way to stab people while firing bolts of lightning everywhere yet, and I think I’ll only have the time to get one done before Heart of Thorns comes out.

Have you tried d/d Ele? Because that’s pretty much what you described.
Also, GW2 isn’t even 3 years out yet.
I’d suggest playing each character till AFTER the “new player experience” (or NPE for short) and then some just to figure out what plays best for you. by that time you have played both a fair amount of time to feel what is best for you and put your gold and time in more and more.
personally i’d go for elementalist because of the amount of different things you can do with them. heal or damage (support and dps) and solo it is very good to do once you know how to play an ele. My thief is still waiting for me to be outfitted with better gear and all, but for me the gameplay wasnt as much fun as with my ele.
(I am a casual player so i probably will be called out for this with words like “nub” and “dont know how to play”).

Playing as Elementalist without a Staff or Wand/Off-Hand just feels wrong.

As a fellow GW1 vet I understand your hesitation but D/D ele is very cool.
Thief first, then Ele….
Elementalist First. Hands down.
Not only can you use D/D (Which is an extremely fast paced and “fun”) but there is also a good chance they will be getting a Sword main hand with the elite spec “Tempest” which if that doesn’t sound like its going to shoot lightning and stab people idek what will. In addition to this, should the need arise, you can specialize in many different roles such as Support focused or as mentioned above, AoE DPS. The class as a whole is in a very great spot, useful in many ways in all game modes and is only going to get better. (Hopefully). This coming from someone who played solely a Ranger or Assassin in GW1.
As a side note, it is looking like Thief is getting a rifle which means if you like the Snipey, Snipey, Backstab stealth killer then that is the class for you. I personally can’t wait to check that out. To top it off there is even a Legendary sword named “Bolt” that will give you some awesome lightning feeling even while playing a Thief.
I’ve been playing this game since beta and I still have yet to pick an absolute favorite class because each one has something I love and none of them have everything I love. Frustrating a lot of the times but also means I can really enjoy and learn all the classes.
