Ha! Here we go everyone, here is the standard typical “should I play this mmorpg?”

So, here is my dilemma. I am a married parent, am gonna start my Masters program this Fall and I am having that MMORPG itch. I have started GW2 before and got to level 29? 30? Somewhere around there. I am curious, as someone who prolly has 2-3 hours a night to invest in video games, if GW2 is worth jumping on board and playing? I have played many MMORPGs and my last MMO I got massively into was ESO (Champ 220) and FFXIV (5 max level characters; all raid gear). My issue is I am unsure if I am willing to spend $180 a year just to play MMORPGs anymore. I am a complete noob at GW2 and don’t know much about the lore or anything going on in the game. Is it too late to jump into the game as everyone would possibly be vastly ahead, or is now the best time than ever to hop on board?

Game wise, it’s worth playing. Money wise,it’s f2p without the expansion.
Tbh It’s a matter of do you want to with that busy life of yours.

Family and a masters program. And 2-3 hours per night?
I wish to know your level of Time Sorcery!

Really though, GW2 is great as a half-time-MMO. No need to grind best-in-slot gear, and you can take content at your own pace. And there’s no monthly cost!

Many alts; handle it!

GW2 for the game is great to play. However, with all the client crash issues the game has been going through this summer, I would wait until Anet solves it before I played as a new player.

Here is the real answer. Yes play. but…
Start with the free version there are years of play and it is 100% free.
If you want to move up wait till the new expansion coming out soon and get that one.

Since there is no monthly charge you feel no pressure to play. The pvp IS SUPER BALANCED for a quick fix.

If you join message me. We are a super tiny guild. We have voice and play every night 8-11ish (eastern). We are all adults and talk about movies, music, family. We are just friends with no drama.
We welcome adults that just want a nice evening.

1. You said that you got to level 29 before. Was that on the free version or did you originally purchase the game? Either way, you are good to go without having to spend anymore money to enjoy a lot of enjoyable content. If you are going to be very busy and money is tight, I would suggest just enjoying the version you currently have and wait until the next expansion comes out as it will likely include the full base-game and HoT.
2. If time grinding is an issue, no worries, getting exotic gear which is almost as good as the top tier gear (ascended) does not take long at all (a couple weeks of casual play once you know what you are doing) so you will not feel horribly under-powered next to other players who may have more time to play and have ascended gear (intelligent players will respect you more for your skill than your gear).
3. Aside from buying the game, there is no need to spend anymore money as the GemStore only contains vanity and convenience items. In other words, no need to spend “$180 a year just to play”. You will be just as competitive if you spend $0 as if you were to spend $1000 dollars on bling.
4. All maps are populated so you will never feel like you are playing an MMO alone.
5. The game is beautifully designed so just exploring it can be amazing.
6. The biggest concern in my opinion is the risk of getting addicted to another MMO if your life is already hectic.

Great answers all!

And I won’t necessarily play every night, I really mean I have 2-3 hours a night to be free lol. I do actually have HoT expansion. I bought it when it first launched but didn’t really get anywhere.

I’m worried about the addiction but that is more of a personal problem than a question lol. I have my games narrowed down to GW2 or the game called Dark and Light, but I am unsure about that game at the moment.

You make it sound like there was a problem with Anet’s game which was not the case. They were targeted by DDoS attacks.

If that were the case, then the clientside crashes wouldn’t be happening primarily during prime time, during the summer. This leads me to be concerned that server capacity/stability might also be an issue. This is further supported by the fact the new Living Story episode was released yesterday, then at prime time the mass client crashes started.

Further, while I’ve been playing MMOs a long time, I’ve not heard of one before that suffered so many successful DDOS attacks. This has been going on for months.

Whether its a serverside issue or constant DDOS attacks, unless resolved, it will kill the playerbase.

Quick reminder: If someone is able to post on the forum then they already own GW2. They might only have the base game, but it will be the paid version. Recommending they hold off on buying HoT could be good advice, but there’s no reason to recommend they start a free account.

DukeofRome: I agree with the others who say GW2 is a great game to play in your situation. Levelling up is quick compared to many more traditional MMOs – even without grinding – I think my slowest is about 120 hours and that’s just doing casual PvE with lots of distractions and some time afk. You can speed that up considerably if you want to, even with very simple things like using the Tomes of Knowledge you get from login rewards to skip some levels.

On top of that exotic equipment (next to top tier) is very easy to get – by the time you get to level 80 you’ll probably be able to buy a full set with karma and/or gold – and it’s perfectly fine for almost everything in the game.

Almost everything can be played solo or with whoever happens to be around (and you’ll rarely find yourself alone in maps) so you don’t need to have a set time to play with a group. And all the story stuff can be done solo.

And of course you don’t have to pay for it. At some point you might want to buy HoT, and maybe the Living Story episodes you’ve missed, and of course there’s gem store stuff if you want it, but you don’t need any of that to play, it’s entirely optional.

The one downside to coming into the game now is you’ll be unable to play Season 1 of the Living Story. That was entirely temporary short-term releases, which were removed when the next one came along. But there’s a video in-game which summarises the key points and more in-depth ones on youtube if you want to know what happened.

You are right, there was an issue with the story but they put out a patch on the same day that it was released, and as far as I am aware, there have not been any more issues with it. I assume you do not visit the GW2 forums often though otherwise you could not have missed all of the numerous threads that were popping up everyday about the ongoing DDoS attacks. It was confirmed by Anet here on the forums as well as on reddit.

Hi

this game has no sub, however, without spending at least some cash to upgrade your account, especially inventory, bank tabs and collection expansion slots, its not very pleasant to play.

Since you already have the game you might as well log on and give it a shot, but do realize that without having at least 1-2 solid timeblocks to play a week, you will be very limited in what you can do once you hit max level.

I disagree.

I’ve been playing since launch, I’ve got 9 permanent characters and a 10th slot for random extras and I’ve never bought any extra inventory bags or collection expanders. I do have 5 bank tabs (total, so I’ve bought 4) but even that seems a bit excessive to me. I’ve currently got 55 spaces free and at least 20 items I’m keeping just because I’ve got the space so I may as well.

As an alternative if you’re not going to be playing 5 characters you can use any free slots to make a mule to store items – even with just the starter backpack that’s 20 slots (2/3 of a bank tab) and it’s completely free.

(Although in this case the OP didn’t mention not wanting to spend any money, just not wanting to spend $180 a year – typical subscription cost – for permission to log into a game they may not have much time to play.)

As someone for whom 2-3 hours represents a long play session, I’d say that you can certainly play GW2 with that kind of time investment. There is almost nothing in the game that you cannot do with limited play, as long as you are OK with things taking longer than they would if you were throwing MMO hobbyist hours at the game.

As far as spending money:

A new XPac announcement is due in a few days. If they price the new XPac at the same price as HoT when it launched, it will be $50. I’d wait and see if ANet holds to their previously-stated policy of bundling HoT with the new XPac. If they do, you will be able to get 2 XPacs for the price of one.

As far as upgrading one’s account, it is very possible to enjoy the game without maxing bank and bag slots. Thinking you need to max those is rooted in impatience (i.e., not wanting to salvage and find a merchant to sell junk a touch more often). Believe me, this is more of an issue for those who play a lot, and not so much for those who play less.

You can also get gems by exchanging gold for them in the in-game gold exchange. You won’t have a lot of gold while leveling a first character, although you can harvest wood, ore and plants as you work through zones, sell them on the TP and begin to build a stash. If your objective is not to spend a lot of money, that is very doable.

Other things:

  • Mega server technology means even in vanilla GW2, you will run into other people.
  • The community is very friendly for the most part.
  • The one thing you’ll want to avoid is joining instanced-content parties that are advertising requirements, at least until you can meet those — if dungeons and raids is even on your radar.
  • A potential downside is that if you want to follow the story all the way through, you will need to use gems to get Season 2 and episodes 1-5 of Season 3 —you’ll unlock S3 Episode 6 if you log in within the next few weeks, and will gain access to the unlock when/if you gain access to HoT. Again, the gems can be gotten via the gold exchange if that’s how you’d prefer to roll.

Should you decide to play, good luck in the game.
