Is this how the game is going to go? People complain about a lack of gear progression long and loud enough they get it? So now people who have had the game they bought, in good faith under the premise that this wouldn’t happen, stolen from them will now have to complain just as loud and as long to have this integrity destroying decision reversed?

I honestly don’t have the energy to try and convince ArenaNet that there was nothing wrong with the old system. I don’t have the energy to explain to them how this turns the rest of us into second class gamers in a game where that was never supposed to happen.

I’m not sure if this is true but wasn’t there a similar case how someone and his guild destroyed Everquest being the vocal minority and such demanding more content and such and eventually left the game? Could be wrong on this though.
Also, Even if they added no gear treadmill at all, there could still be lots of complaints about lack of end-game and lack of this and that and players will have left because there’s some players who don’t want to just hunt for skins. If they really care about their work and want players to use em or admire em especially the dungeon armors, they should at least add an ascended version or ascended drops on hard mode if there ever will be, otherwise the dungeons are going to be left in the dust in favor of the better gear-dungeon and I don’t believe that there is alot of players using transmutation stones for the skins, if one would do many runs of a dungeon to get some particular skin then go ahead, if not then head on to get ascended gear.

I don’t mind the new tier myself but it feels like they did so much for almost nothing, I personally don’t know many players in favor of getting skins rather than better stat-wise gear.
But ah well, i’l wait till update days to see the stats and infusions for myself.

It’s not just one tier, in that post by arenanet, it’s the FIRST level that is coming, which implies there will be more coming and all future armors coming will be using the ascended system.

On the contraire, sir. It is one tier. The “more coming” is in the same tier.

This is NOT breaking their promise. If people actually use logic, its just another tier. Just like Blues, Just like Greens, Just like yellows, and just like oranges. It is NOT a gear treadmill since you dont get better gear after this. It is just like legendaries being the best. Now its ascended thats the best. It is just more variety, not a broken promise.

I really wish people would actually look up what logic is before claiming to use it.

I guess we’ll have to see when it comes out but this system do allow for both forms of progression either new tiers and within tier, which is a gear grind.

I dunno if I’m the only one who thinks this, but

As we watch Guild Wars 2 mature in its Live environment, we have found that our most dedicated players were achieving their set of Exotic gear and hitting “the Legendary wall.” We designed the process of getting Legendary gear to be a long term goal, but players were ready to start on that path much sooner than we expected and were becoming frustrated with a lack of personal progression.

is phrased kind of weirdly. I’m kind of thinking what she meant to say was that blues and greens were trivial, yellow was a pittance on the Trading Post and exotics take a little while but ultimately aren’t too hard, and then you have a GINORMOTRONIC distance to cover to get your legendary. Exotics are basically the Heroic 5-man gear of GW2, and that doesn’t push into anything. This, of course, makes the fundamental mistake of assuming that the gear is the reason to do the content…

I definitely think that the tiers of gear could have a better spread. Does that mean a new one’s needed? Maybe. But it doesn’t sit right with me; I can’t help but feel that making dungeons more consistently rewarding outside of giving you tokens, and a more consistent experience insofar as difficulty, would be a better investment than trying to poke in a new tier of gear 3 days before a patch goes live. This should have been announced a year ago, otherwise you get this exact reaction.

You guys do all realise that whilst the ascended tier does have marginally better stats it completely removes your ability to customise them with runes and sigils right?

If you happen to find a piece of ascended gear that doesn’t match your build then guess what? Yup, that exotic is still actually better for you.

It sounds to me like the infusions are solely designed for the fractals dungeon, in which case the overall stat allocation on the items is marginally better at the expense of customisation.

I think it’s quite likely we’ll see a lot of people continuing to use their exotics after this patch (outside of the fractals dungeon) purely because the ascended gear doesn’t have the stats they want.

I don’t think people understand why this is needed, they want to add a level of customization to gear in which they can build on. Exotic lacks that currently. Sure they could just upgrade all the exotics in the game but this seems much easier.

Now, the stats seem to be the big problem with many posting. But they need to do two things, push people to go for the gear so enough have it in the future and give those that feel they have nothing to do in the game something to do. They planned on legendaries occupying more of peoples time, which they don’t seem to be doing.

I don’t see any problem with broken promises unless they continue to create more tiers in the future. Right now this seems to be just a new system from lack oversight.

The tenets of the game are still here, you don’t need high end gear to access any part of the game or compete. It’s all optional.

Rather than screaming and crying about changes that add one new gear step, I am just going to get that next gear step… it is one extra upgrade oh well. May as well just look at it like they launched without completing the gear system.

The pvp did not launch with a spectator mode, and they said they wanted this to be an ESport, cant be an ESport without it really, or at least a good one. Just look at it as them polishing their gear system, one new step in the line means very little in all reality.

For WvW They can just force the upgrade back down to current gear to keep people happy, problem solved.

I still think we’re missing some info:

  • Will Ascended armour be upgradable with Runes? If not, increased stats make sense (to bring it on par with runes, and to make up for the lack of bonuses). If this is the case, then Exotics may yet still be the best for WvW (I mean, what would you rather have: that bit of extra power of that bonus that fits your playstyle?).

Post says this

“The stats and functionality normally added to gear through upgrade components are actually built into Ascended items. "

So the base stats of ascended items will be slightly better than exotics + upgrade slots and they get the infusion slot.

You sir are still incorrect cause they never stated which rune and i doubt they would throw +150 of 1 stat on to a single item. and link the source cause i have not read a single spot where they said they built the functionality of a rune into the armour.

1. she also says the infusion is only for ascended FOR NOW…they may allow infusion on exotics in the future.

2. she says ascended gear will roll out with future patches. no mention of additional tiers. ascended may be the only and last tier they add.

3. after seeing this backlash on forums, there is no way they aren’t going to rethink their plans

i just hope PVPer’s don’t get forced into doing PVE.

I swear most of you missing a brain or something. They said ascended gear is between exotic – ascended – legendary.

Sunrise : Weapon Strength: 1011 – 1117
+182 Power
+130 Toughness
+130 Vitality

Exotic Greatsword: Weapon Strength: 995 – 1100
+179 Power
+128 Toughness
+128 Vitality

Ascended between exotic and legendary so WOWWW so much stat increase eh. Before it was elitist cry there no endgame, no gear progression and now it the casual crying about ascended. NOT LIKE SOME1 GONNA OWN YOU IN 1 SHOT IF U DON’T HAVE ASCENDED.

I didn’t realize the community acted as a monolithic entity. Show me one person who asked for gear progression earlier who is complaining now.

Or a 37-page thread that has existed for 12 hours demanding gear progression…

Most of the players that asked for gear progression have left the game by now because they rushed to level 80 as fast as they could and didn’t have anything to do after that. So you’re not asking the right question.

By the way, I’m happy with the addition of Ascended Gear. Why? Because I’m not yet level 80. I’m taking my sweet natural time and clearing each and every map and looking at every vista two or three times. This game is awesome and I’m happy with everything about it, except it needs autofollow. haha

How i see this:

Exotic =Best stats for just picking up and playing.
Legendary = better stats than exotic if you work hard enough but not much of a difference and is negligible. Highly expensive and only for the true hardcore. You can still kill an legendary player or any geared player.

Armor:

Exotic: Same as weapons. Best you can get without any expensive grind or effort.
Ascended: Since there is no legendary armor, you have “Ascended armor” which is on par to Legendary weapons but for armor only. Its only slighly better and may not even be worth it to anyone but the hardcore. You can still beat anyone in a match with ascended or anything.

Get my drift? Plain enough for all you crybabies? ANET is not breaking any promises.

“you don’t need high end gear to access any part of the game or compete. It’s all optional.”

actually you do its explicitly stated you will need ascended gear to do later levels of the fractals dungeon, and you need to grind the gear to remain on an even level in WvW contrary to popular belief 1vs 1 does happen, earlier today i was fighting someone and we both went into downed at the same time, give me or him a dps/ mitigation bonus over the few minutes of our fight and then that wouldn’t have been the case.

if they were to make it unusable/nerfed in WvW then there would be complaints of i spent x weeks farming this gear and it doesn’t work in WvW; gear from WvW/PvP should be unusable/nerfed in PvE

the game goes from play what you want to grind X to be good at X oh you want to do Y now? tough X doesn’t carry over to Y

if you look at the MF comparison (thanks for making the Mf set i finished less than 2 weeks ago obsolete those exotics were totally worth it now) the MF on the ascended ring is about 42.8% stronger than the exotic ring, if that gap translates to other stats. then cumulatively over a full gear set there will be a noticeable advantage.

“Rather than screaming and crying about changes that add one new gear step, I am just going to get that next gear step…”

so this will be your reaction when they introduce another new gear step? and another after that?
because you know the people who cried about gear progression are just going to cry again when they have a full set of ascended and “nothing to do”.

This was a Terrible decision. listening to feedback from the initial rush of players who complain its not enough like the game they just left and then go back to is never a good idea.

i wish the devs had a consistent vision and didn’t push out content they know is flawed

Most of the complaints about PVE content have been about how its is limited in appeal due to two main reasons, flawed mechanics certainly…but mainly poor rewards. The only reason you would currently do dungeon more than once (because the first time, realistically, is the only time thats “for fun”) is to gain tokens for specific armor you want. This is because the chest rewards are meaningless and there is nothing in game “better” than what you are almost certainly wearing (exotics). For me, personally on thief, the tokens I needed were 2 specific items from CoF plus the daggers from CoE. The items I needed from CoF took me 7 runs to get. There is now quite literally no point going back. I can get better rewards from doing the DE outside the dungeon. I don’t like the cultural armor enough to grind for that (althugh I have the boots) and there is no other item in the game I want, apart from maybe the legendary dagger…but that is an unbelievable amount of grinding. I had the God armor from Orr temples and transmuted it because I thought it was ugly.

So fundamentally, unless new items were added that you had to do dungeons or other content to get, there is not much left for me to play for. Making these new items just skins would be OK as long as you LIKED the skins and considered them desirable, but as you can’t please all of the people all of the time…this would not have been everyone. In consequence most people would do the new content once, maybe twice and then yet again hit up the boards to complain how bored they are.

I’m pleased about the change and without changes this game would be dead in the water in six months tops, when people finally realise there is nothing better to do than grind Plinx or lodestones.

And I’m deliberately not mentioning WvWvW as I think its horrible.

If ascended equipment is just an additional rarity level above exotic, you would have to be able to get it without running a dungeon because one of the base promise was that anyone can cap their stats with reasonable effort.

And if ascended equipment is the term “legendary” adapted for armors then I’m sorry but legendary weapons don’t have better stats then exotics so ascended gear wouldn’t either, they would just look way cooler, like the prestige armor of Guild Wars 1.
