So, Halloween has past. However the Trick-or-Treat bag still remains as a guaranteed drop. I expected Anet to remove this on the 8th nov. patch. But that did not happen. Did they forgot about it, or is it intended this way?

You’d rather have nothing than the seasonal item? The ‘seasonal’ slot was previously a temporary festival item, dropping around 10 weeks/year or so; the seasonal slot will have something 52 weeks of the year.

(I know we sort of went back & forth on this in another thread — I’m hoping that they add a fine/basic unlock to the ‘unlock slot’, so that something always drops, even if it’s likely to be a skin I won’t care about.)

What is now the seasonal slot used to be the booster slot.

They’ve gone from 1 booster + 2 other items and very occasionally a 4th slot with a seasonal item to 1 seasonal item + 2 others + very occasionally a 3rd item.

Never buy keys. Just get an extra slot, either spend a week casually leveling them to 10, or once a week use the Tomes of Knowledge from your dailies (8 total) to hit level 10 and get a key in about 20 minutes.

I did this on my main account and alt-account after a long hiatus of key runs since the nerf and got a Black Lion Weapon Ticket

I’m confused. Are you referring to the Wardrobe Unlock here? Because it already contains Fine/Basic/Masterwork skins. Or the 4th slot in the Chest? Because that isn’t where the Wardrobe Unlock falls. Or you are hoping for a different set of Black Lion Skins added to the Uncommon/Rare/Super Rare 4th slot?

So now instead of at least getting something useful, even if another trading post express or Bank access item…we get a completely useless bag of Halloween junk that you can’t even sell on the Trading Post??

Thank you for informing me of this change.

I had been spending $60-$100 a month on Gems, of which a good portion went to BLTC keys so I could get boosts, teleport to friend, and occasional nice skins. This change just cut the odds on getting any of those.

Sorry Anet, this move just lost you a player that was willing to spend a lot of cash each month… I am not paying for junk items I don’t need or can’t sell.

Ergo, Trick or Treat bag is more useful.

So in the end the Chest got a drastic nerf, at least that it what’s it feels like. Down from 3 guaranteed Black Lion items to two guaranteed items while the third slot now contains blanks most of the time. This is really a huge kick in the balls. A nerve of 1/3 of the possible items and only a single ToT bag as new item slot, one of the most common item this game has to offer. And on top of that the remove of the boosters, now that they really got interesting with the buffs they received.
Even if it was never worth buying keys, at least it was really nice to get them in game and receive a few of the gemstore only items. But with the recent change the chest feels absolute underwhelming. I will probably save my keys as well and wait for the Chest to become something again I can look forward to open.

I drop my spare trading post by the Mystic forge. I figure people who are forging can use it. Maybe no direct use to me but it’s a friendly thing I do occasionally so, some use to the game as a whole.

Bank accesses are not a junk item. Before I got my permanent one I might have used it rarely but that was because it was too valuable to me to use frivolously.

I really hated the bank expresses, because if you accidentally move, there goes the item! It’s not like the merchant which persists and also other people can use it.

I probably ended up using like 5 of them after all these years and it wasn’t too productive for the most part. I still have 11 in my bank that I’m keeping for some reason.

I still wouldn’t consider them a junk item though.

Trading post merchants are a boon for crafters. They’re semi-useful in WvW as well but the provisioner has made them less.

Still though, a booster is better than a lousy bag for the most part.

All we lost was the booster slot. The seasonal slot use to be occasional but now permanent. Uncommon and rarer items now have their own slot that has a fix chance of showing up, in theory the same aggregate drop rate as before, just presented differently.

If you loved boosters, yes, you have all right to be annoyed. If you thought they were just junk that accumulated in your bank or you were forced to delete to save space, you don’t miss them. And it seems like the average scrap drop rate per chest may actually be higher now.

My complaint is that they eliminated the chance to get no items that I consider useless and replaced it with the chance to get at least 2 items I consider useless. That’s the first 2 slots.

Then there’s the 3rd slot, still with a pretty steep chance to present me with something useless: 4 out of the 6 possible drops, with the 5th being another RNG package that can also result in something that’s useless to me.

That leaves a 4th slot I haven’t seen yet.

No, the chests don’t appeal to me anymore. Too much guaranteed uselessness.

Idk, don’t really mind the ToT-bag. But that is if they did it differently. As for now the first slot is a guaranteed drop. additionally there is a CHANCE that a 4th slot opens for something extra. I believe this is only for skin (correct me if i am wrong). Instead, if they just kept the 3 slots open for all kind of things and added a 4th sloth for the ToT. Then it would have been fine in my opinion.

Regardless, it would be nice if a dev could respond to this topic in terms of how long the ToT-bag will last in the chest. Or if Anet just forgot to remove it, so we have an official answer and know “what is up”

Wardrobe unlocks are 99% useless to me too. Generally speaking, if I want a skin, I get it and have done so since I started playing. 99% of what a wardrobe unlock can give me will only progress my account in the sense that an icon in my wardrobe/dye collection/mini collection that I’ll never look at will go from faded to full color.

I’m not sure it’s an edge case, I found myself in exactly the same situation even though there’s a lot of things they can give which I’d like to have. On the face of it they seem like a good idea, but in practice I doubt it’s that great for most people.

I got one from the free chest/key they gave out just after the change, and technically I got really lucky with it: I got the Wintersday Focus Skin – worth 109g on the TP. But I never use foci on any of my characters and if I did I wouldn’t use that skin. So it’s useless to me and I can’t even sell it.

As I said it sounds like a great idea – unlock a free skin/outfit/glider/mini etc. but I think it’s unlikely anyone uses all of the things it can give and there’s so many of them that the chances of getting one you want is pretty low. Then you can’t even trade it with someone else who does want it and use the gold to buy something you want.

In my opinion, ANet made a typical tactical mistake by making several changes at once:

  • Dropped a guaranteed item of high-value (booster)
  • Turned a cheap item from 10 weeks/year to 52 weeks/year.
  • Included a new thing that doesn’t drop all the time (the wardrobe unlock).

This has resulted in people fixating on the meaningless festival/seasonal drop: even though it’s theoretically better (used to drop 20% of the time; now drops all the time). It was never meant to be more than a little color, but now it’s occupying everyone’s attention.

The chests had four theoretical drops before Halloween and they still have four:

  • Two “anything” drops, which are the main course (tickets, scraps, and other potential goodies).
  • A ‘color’ drop (used to be 20% of the year as a festival drop; now it’s 100% a seasonal drop).
  • A bonus drop (used to be a guaranteed booster; now it’s a guaranteed wardrobe unlock… that, unfortunately, only drops 10% of the time).

What I think they should have done originally is make the “wardrobe” a 100% slot. So instead of four drops in theory, we’d always have four drops. To allow this to happen, they’d have to invent a new item, a “common” wardrobe unlock (as opposed to the current “rare” unlock). The “common” would drop 90% of the time; the “rare” would drop the same 10% as it does now.

tl;dr I’m ignoring the festival drop; it’s meaningless in the grand scheme of things. I’m saying that we would have all felt better if ANet had made a simpler swap: guaranteed boosters for guaranteed wardrobe unlock.
