Token Asian Guy
Why do we always have to have an Asian guy with us in the story? We finally get rid of Marshal Trahearne and now we get Canach. Before Canach it was Marjory Delaqua.
No mater what happens in the story, there is always a token Asian person with you.
Not trying to come off racist but that is exactly what Anet is doing forcing us to always have this Asian NPC with you.
Where is Asia located in Tyria?

That’s easy.
Anything close to Cantha.
Is Asia a type of plant/ Sylvari ?
And if so..is Marjory a Sylvari in disguise ?
Neither Asia or Cantha has any sylvari so Trahearne and Canach are not Asian or Canthan.

Why did you quote me w/o adding any response? Did you misunderstand my question to you?
Let me rephrase what I said for clarity: There is no one who’s Asian in Tyria, because Asia does not exist in Tyria. You are projecting your own perceptions/perspectives of RL onto a fictional world.

Not technically no, but Marjory Delaqua is.
I never even thought of any of the NPCs you’ve mentioned as asian. I’ve always viewed Marjory as caucasian* and the two sylvari you mentioned are sylvari. If you’re talking eye shape, I know plenty of people from all kinds of ethnicities that have Canach’s eye shape.
I would only equate canthans as asian-appearing in the Guild Wars universe. I mean, you don’t get much more tastefully stereotypically asian as Master Togo or Shiro.
Maybe you have a problem. I don’t mind diversity and I don’t think “canthans” are being over-represented here.
Inb4 thread gets closed.
EDIT: *apparently Marjory is of canthan decent. Still not asian, but as close as you could get to it in GW. For me, her ethnicity is pretty subtle (or perhaps I just never really thought about it).

That’s not even technically, unless youre claiming she is Sylvari.
So of the 3 you mention, only one even remotely fits your post. Marjory is of Canthan decent. The other two are native to the continent Of Tyria.
I bet the first Pale Tree seed planted by the Ventari in Arbor Bay was actually imported from Cantha.

I bet you don’t even know the games lore.
Well CowKing, trying or not, you are most certainly coming across as racist.
There are no Asians in Tyria. And an Asian sylvari? If you are equating a plant character to any human race, you have more problems than just racism.
And even if there were Asians in game, who cares? What does it matter what race any character is? SMDH.
Seriously. I see sensitivity training in your future.
I do know the games lore, but it’s wrong. Ronan thought he was buying a Japanese maple but the Canthan he bought it off of gave him the wrong seeds.
Yeah I agree with Chad, you need to brush up on the lore yourself before actually questioning ArenaNet over it.
In any case, I can’t see this thread lasting too long.

If someone re-quotes w/o reply it usually indicates they are in agreement with what was quoted
Or I tried to reply and didn’t have 15 characters.

You don’t need 15 characters. Just spam spacebar to fill in your post

If your quoting someone you don’t need 15 characters in your answer. The quote will fill that requirement.

yeah, I already understood that… but this time my point was in opposition to the OP’s… which is why I asked for clarification AND restated my point… in case what I said was (very likely) misinterpreted.

No. No Asian I’ve ever seen has leaves for hair.
Yeah but the Epicanthic fold kind of gives it away.
there are a bunch of asian looking NPCs but that shrub isn’t one of them
Yeah but the Epicanthic fold kind of gives it away.
The Pale Tree was planted on a human graveyard and the bodies of the humans were used as a template for the Sylvari form. If a Canthan was buried there and it’s face was used as a template it’s not the same as being Canthan. A copy is not the original. Looking like something isn’t being something.
Well if they aren’t Canthan..where did they all get the Epicanthic fold from?
The epicanthic fold is common among Asians but is not a Asian only trait. There are people in Africa with epicanthic folds, such as the Khoisan people. It appears to be related to the structure of the nose (a nose with a low bridge) and is not a racial trait.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epicanthic_fold
One of the primary facial features that is often closely associated with the epicanthic fold is elevation of the nasal bridge. All else equal, a lower-rooted nasal bridge is more likely to cause epicanthic folds, and a higher-rooted nasal bridge is less likely to do so. There are various factors that influence whether someone has epicanthic folds, including geographical ancestry, age, and certain medical conditions.
Edit: google is your friend.

I felt my brain cells shrivelling and dying after reading that first post.
There are white people who have no Asian ancestry who have epicanthic folds.
Anytime someone says “I’m not trying to be racist but….”, they’re being racist.
Why do we always have to have a white person with us in the story? We finally get rid of Logan and now we get Kasmeer. Before Kasmeer it was Countess Anise.
No mater what happens in the story, there is always a white person with you.
Not trying to come off racist but that is exactly what ANet is doing forcing us to always have this white NPC with you.
How stupid does this sound to you?
You know, I’ve read a lot of posts, topics, and opinions on these forums. But this one? This one takes the cake. Please don’t bait the community. Not nice.

The initial post in this thread has some pretty unpleasant undertones. Our races are these: Human, Norn, Asura, Charr, and Sylvari. Whether they have, or an individual sees, certain similarities to races in the real world is irrelevant. They are what they are, and we are proud of the cultures they represent and the rich history they bring to Tyria.
Whether a representative is a major component of a story arc, or plays a secondary role, tokenism just really isn’t part of our story.
I am closing this thread. If someone fails to understand why, you’re welcome to contact us but somehow, I don’t think anyone will fail to see why the closure took place.
