Just started playing this game a monthish ago and I’m just starting to get into crafting my first ascended weapon. I did a bit of googling and came across some topics where people stated gw2 may be expanding soon as in higher lvl cap, thus making ascended weapons completely obsolete…

I plan to finish my first ascended wep within the next month, does anyone know if its still worth it? I don’t want to craft it and then 2 months later its obsolete…

I haven’t heard anything about expanding the level cap in GW2. Other than baseless rumor and random people theorizing it’ll happen because it often does in MMO’s. I could just be out of the loop, but…

Rise of level cap is VERY unlikely to happen.
You can craft your ascended weapon without any worries at all.
And even if that ever happens, it would be in matter of years, not months.

EDIT: Just to let you know, in GW1 lvl 20 was the cap from the beginning until now.

With the stats on an ascended weapon, even if the level limit did raise, at level 85 or 90 a level 80 ascended weapon would still do really well. It would be better than whites or blues at that level, and likely overtake some greens as well (to a certain point).

But yeah, like the others said, there have been no announcements of a raise in level cap, or an expansion, or anything else. What you see is what you get, and if something IS coming, since we don’t know anything about it, it’s going to be at least several months away.

The general theory is that a level cap would be suicide for the game. Or least chase away many of the people who played since launch. No, I don’t see this happening.

If 300g for a commander tag would cause uproar…imagine what would happen if a level cap was added!

I think you are safe

Raising the level cap was something they originally planned for and said if they were going to raise it, it would probably happen with an expansion.

I wouldn’t expect for them to raise it anytime soon though. They’ll likely continue to uncover the map using the living story over the next few years (at this rate). When the time comes, they’ll probably release one of the other continents as an expansion. At that point, I would expect to see vertical progression in some form.

No, no, no, no, and no. This is not, nor was it ever, true in any way, shape, or form. Why would you even think this when nothing was EVER said about raising a level cap? Anet has set the max level at 80, and it will stay there until the world ends. Characters past 80 get skill points. I have 2 mains, and even after spending 100’s of skill points on the many things we can spend skill points on, each of my mains has over 400 skill points.

Colin said in an interview a long time ago, “And I’m sure as we add expansion content we’re going to add more progression and add more levels to the game.”

I really don’t think he used the term “levels” in the manner some people think he did. He spoke of adding them “to the game”, not “to the character”. I think that makes a difference. If the level cap were raised, wouldn’t my lvl 80 guardian already be level 480+? Yes, he’s earned those skill points for each level earned past 80. Would my toon automatically be lvl 90 if they raised the cap to lvl 90? No, I’d bet not. Would this make ANY sense? Of course not.

Because it was:

Yeah. The level cap will be 80 on the initial release of the game, and we absolutely would increase it further into the game, probably through expansions is the most likely place we would do that."

and

Mike O’Brian

In GW1 we never advanced the level cap through four campaigns/expansions. The game design didn’t allow for it. But GW2 was designed without those restrictions, and we’ve always expected that we will someday raise the level cap in GW2.”

Those were not the only ones, by the way, just google gw2 level cap for more.

I wouldn’t worry about it. Enjoy the game as it is now, not what it may be. If they decide to raise the level cap, I’m sure they will think of some way to make the Legendary/Ascended stuff still relevant – either by making it some kind of special veteran item, or by giving you a way to upgrade them to the new max level.

Or words to that effect.

They discussed it (upping the level cap) before release, and I think that quote resurfaced recently, but I imagine by this point it’s not something they would consider doing any longer.

EDIT: Actually I could totally see them doing it one day, but.. meh. I guess we’ll just have to adapt. Besides, it would mean more content.
