Hello all, hoping to get some help here. I just got GW2 on Xmas and I haven’t even played 5 mins yet. What I was wondering is what the best profession to start off with? I enjoy soloing. In MMO in the past I normally play Locks/Necros. But this time I would like to melee. And some pointers would also be good… Thanks

You can play a Necro with Daggers and melee as one if you like. Rangers have good solobility and can melee. Pretty much everyone can melee in some form or fashion just depends on what you like to play.

All classes have both ranged and melee or near-melee options available to them, as well as self healing, so it’s really about the flavor you are looking for, what sounds the most interesting to you, do you want to be a warrior or an engineer… A guardian is a good start, he is predominantly melee, has heavy armor and plenty of healing and will have an easier time soloing the harder “veteran” monsters, but I advise you to try more classes out.

I like the ranger a lot for soloing. If you like having pets that is another plus for the ranger. The ranger is also pretty effective in melee as well if you have good vitality.

I might check out the ranger, in WoW I was also a fan of the Thief. How are they solo grinding? Or the Warrior? I mostly played pet-Casters in past MMO but this time I want to smash skulls but be able to survive..

Grinding? What’s grinding?

Welcome to GW2, hope you enjoy the game.
Thief Solo is decent if you like hit and run game play, very always on the move. Stealth out if things get too rough.

As others have said, Guardian also makes for good solo play, high armor and lots of self heal options, very beginner friendly.

Whatever you choose, explore all the weapon options for each class and you will find that you can play many different roles from the same class without being ‘stuck’ in a paticular build or role 100% of the time. You cannot ‘screw up’ your character and be forced to reroll the class because once unlocked, your skills will always be there for you.

Have fun and welcome to an awesome game!

Guardian with Greatsword – best Melee in the game.

Most people agree that Guardians are OP. Take advantage now before they get nerfed.

Ignore the grumpy response above. Welcome! Im a gw2 newb too (still, and having a blast!). My first class I made was guardian: awsome survivability! Love her. Second class I made was warrior: shes a bit squishier, but im having a blast kiting with the bow. Fyi guardians cant use bow or rifle, they suck at ranged fight. But they have neat teleport to target abilities

If you find yourself needing to go to lions arch (hangout spot, trading, crafting, bank etc) use the WWW for free transport to lions ( not the same service back though :p) Also from lions ( also known as LA) you can go to homecities for free and back to LA.

The most soloable class is easily ranger. They have a pet which offsets much of their aggro, you can do awesome AOE with traps. It’s fun.

Guardians for melee would be my second choice as they have protections and healing. You can kill many things in two shots with just the two hander mace. Don’t bother with the sword it takes 1 attack too long LOL.
