“I’m finding companies should sell access to forums,

When the wardrobe system first got its rollout, several fashion pieces weren’t supported. Those became infinite-use tonics, much to the disappointment of many people who invested gems. While refunds were given in a timely fashion (and I’m thankful for that), it’s still a disappointment.
We can’t take them into combat and there are no dye channels. Most regrettably, we can’t mix and match with town clothes, which are also tonics.
This can change, now that we have outfits. Easy-on, easy-off, combat-capable, and dye-customizable, outfits have seen some great support from the design staff. With that in mind, it’s time to allow us to convert those tonics into outfits, so we can use them better.
They should’ve never become tonics in the first place.
Yes, make tonic clothes normal skins or outfits.
As I said last time this was suggested: I concur, with one large caveat. Don’t make the outfits look just like the current tonics. Some of the combinations are just … odd. Either solicit suggested combinations from the player base or go back to the (now archived?) threads with pictures submitted of town clothes to get ideas for looks people enjoyed having.
On top of that if it’s possible to hide shoulders and gloves on outfits, or at the very least sub in whatever headpiece we want, that would go a long way to restoring the old freedom of appearance. Not all the way, but still worth the doing.

Yeah
Here’s a khaki shorts tonic! And we matched it with a space suit chest piece and some fishing waders for boots!
:|
If they refuse (I know they say can’t, but that’s kitten litter, it’s desire, which…is sadly why they got rid of it in the first place, because it wasn’t healthy and appropriate ™, even though they made it to begin with, like the running and idle animations) to bring back the mix-n-match system, then let me design my own outfit out of the old pieces, pick my 4 color channels and, submit it. I’ll pay for it, Bernie, if I must.
Yeah, I was none too happy about the khaki set and its weird, frilly shirt thing. :\
The leather vest is a great general option, though, especially for medium wearers who can’t stomach yet another longcoat. And town clothes. We can actually bring those back.
@notebene.3190, I, too, would pay for custom outfits. Though, that’d get a bit odd with the way dye channels work on some gear.
To Hell with Tonics and Outfits! They did a rotten job of matching the Town Clothing pieces together to make Tonics. I’m not sure I would bother transmuting my Tonics into Outfits because of the poor combos they thrust upon us.
My solution? RESTORE TOWN CLOTHES! Put them back in the game EXACTLY AS BEFORE! Keep Outfits. I’m not saying to get rid of Outfits (though I’ll never buy any). But there is NO REASON Town Clothes could not be put back into the game. Darned few pieces (mostly hats) were turned into Outfits anyway. Just un-Tonic them and give us back our mix ‘n’ matchable non-combat clothing!
At the very least the starting ones all players got by default with cultural clothes should have been given back as part of the first leveling.
Get a character to the level at which they unlock the wardrobe, they get a mail with the ArenaNet logo and the outfit:
It’s only benefits.

Agreed. They shouldn’t have gone this route to begin with. It was a rude, poorly thought out, insulting move on their part.

Did they ever say why they got rid of non-combat/town clothes in favor of tonics anyway?
I mean, I get outfits. It made sense to add outfits. But what were they fixing with the whole conversion of town clothes to tonics? Was it ever explained? (Honest question not sarcasm- I don’t remember what was said around that time.)
Kind seems like they really just wanted to get rid of town clothes entirely, and threw up the tonics so there wouldn’t be as much complaining, knowing they’d gradually fade out of use.
They should’ve never become tonics in the first place.
Yes, make tonic clothes normal skins or outfits.
I vote yes!
I think that they see the problem with having town clothes as outfits under the current system is that your wielded weapon will be displayed. Personally I wouldn’t mind and would start using town clothes again even if this were the case. I wonder how many people think that moving from tonics to outfits would be a backwards step for this reason.

I wouldn’t be bothered by the weapons showing with town-clothes themed outfits. I think the major problem was that people didn’t really use town clothes because they didn’t do anything in combat. (Nevermind that I had a keybind to swap into town clothes, but whatev.. :\)
I’d certainly be up for them re-releasing town clothes as a separate wardrobe, but I don’t see them doing it. The suitable compromise on development time is to recast them as outfits. The dye channels already existed once, so that wouldn’t be so difficult to reassign.
And there’d probably be a market for casual-wear outfits. They’d make bank on a few summer-themed outfits (like Lord Faren~), though something that immersion-threatening might end up as a tonic (Blue Bikini Tonic, for example).
there never was a time not to do that. I as outfit hater would even support to have the tonics as outfits. So much wasted skins.. so sad. Atleast as outfits they would have some real use to people again.
So the Outfit vs Armor skins debate continues to rage on! Many like the outfits for their ease of use and weight class anonymity, while Armor skins allow for deeper customization. Why can’t we have the best of both worlds? Well I think we could. I think we should take the next step in the wardrobe evolution.
Let’s further decouple skins from stats. Let each Character have a couple of Transmutation Templates or Custom Outfits. Each template would have slots for each armor and back (I’m not sure how weapons would fit into it, but I think the major concerns lie with armor anyway). Make it free to swap between these templates, but cost transmutation charges to apply/change the skin in any slot. This way it still cost charges somewhere but we’d be able to have a couple of custom styles to easily swap between. I would suggest to start of with 3-5 (3 is the minimum I would like to see, 5 is generous) and you could acquire more through gemstore.
I’m not sure how to handle weapon skins though and what to do with the “old” system. Though my preliminary idea is to have the old system in parallel with the new, and let skins on pieces overwrite if any slot is left empty in a template (and have an option no template).
This is just somewhat in the direction I’d like to see it move, I’m sure there are improvements to my ideas out there!
I was going through my bank and I saw my basic town clothes…..and then
It kind of occurred to me that town clothes don’t count as a outfit……why?
I think Anet should consider changing the basic town clothes they gave us to outfits we can wear and still fight in…..everyone would have this outfit too.
Otherwise…what purpose to they serve other then taking up a slot in my bank?
Everyone gets one free outfit they can choose to wear or not over their armor. And the basic town clothes get a use again.

Yeah they shouldn’t have done the whole stupid tonic thing. We should be able to exchange those old silly tonics and make our town clothes into outfits. I mean they keep pushing outfits on us, we might as well have our old town clothes back as outfits.
I agree; it would be nice if they could put the town clothes in as a free outfit for everyone instead of a tonic.
It was a question of managing resources. If they had made all town clothes into outfits, we probably wouldn’t have seen the wardrobe for another 5-6 months. Much as I like some of the town clothes (and little as I use the tonics), I am happy to have gotten the wardrobe sooner, in exchange for losing out on some cool sets.

I think this is about the “basic” town clothes, the ones that looked different for each race.
Those, at least, should be outfits. Consider them a “gateway outfit” to let people try the idea, and maybe get more new players to buy some from the gemstore.

Exactly this.
To be honest, most of the town clothes sold on the gem store were single pieces, like pants, vests, hats, etc.
Rather than turning them into single set outfits that can’t be customized, I’d rather they just remained single pieces and got added to our wardrobe as armour pieces. Just make them available for all class weights.
I agree; it would be nice if they could put the town clothes in as a free outfit for everyone instead of a tonic.
This, have my +1
I do hope that they plan to do this..it would be great if it was updated in time for HoT.
At this point I’m surprised they haven’t done it yet.
They used to be against letting people play normally in those kinds of armour sets, but now they make outfits that are just as silly as the town clothes.
No comments on this?
Tonics and outfits were both inexcusably poor solutions. They should have just implemented all former town clothes into the standard skin system, even if they had to redo them from scratch. That was the only acceptable solution.

Exactly this completely. I want my sylvari hot pants back! I still have 14+ of my casual town clothes we used to get upon creation. I want these to be come an outfit. One free outfit for everyone so they can try outfits. It wouldn’t be the only outfit that is different for everyone based on their race (chef outfit is like that too).
I guess I can understand why they didn’t convert the single pieces into outfits and the head pieces became universal helms (I still want those bunny ears to come back), but they really should turn those into outfits too…or if nothing else just make the single pieces fit with one of the weight classes. tonics were silly for that.
I liked running around in my chef clothes, aviators and boxing gloves. Can’t do that anymore. Curse you sent and your standards in the kitchen. Mandatory hats for all chefs and no after hours underground kitchen fights.

I’m not saying there shouldn’t be outfits. I’m saying there was no good reason to make a special single slot for them instead making them as individual pieces the way they do other skins, allowing for mix and match.
Mix and match for town clothes wouldn’t have been the best option. Odds are, it follows the cloth framework, which doesn’t match up with medium/heavy frames. Outfits allow the entire frame to be used, so any character can use them, regardless of class/armor weight.
I logged in just to say I’ve been thinking of suggesting the exact same thing. Having a “custom outfit” item would be amazing. You could swap gear and still retain the same look without having to go through the process of reskinning and redying. Yes please to custom outfits. <3
When it comes to armor, outfits, and town clothes… I suspect the reason is the same.
The amount of return on investment for the work put in wouldn’t be worth it. I think that sort of customization would appeal to a very small niche of players that wouldn’t be able to support the resources put into it.
But that’s just my guess based on the entire town clothes debacle.
I just wanna fight in my town clothes with full skills. And give them an actual use.
A few questions to develop the idea:
-How would this work for armour weights? Could a heavy wear completely light armour? Would it mean that you could make a custom outfit with a mix of light/medium/heavy armour?
-How would the system be able to tell the difference between cultural and non-cultural armour? Say, if you made a custom outfit using a few asuran cultural armour pieces, what would happen if you applies the outfit to a norn?
-What would happen in regards to clipping? Being able to mix all armour weights together is likely going to cause a lot of possibility for clipping. Would this mean armour weights would have to remain separate?
-Do you think that the current system is best for A-net, financially? I’m sure they’re getting great revenue from people buying gems to buy outfits and transmutation charges. Surely upsetting the system for one that gives oppurtunity for more free aesthetic change would be a bad business decision. What could be done to your suggestion to make it more lucrative (and reasonable) for A-net to actually implement it?
EDIT: To clarify, I was responding to Zorby here. Zorby’s thread was merged with this one… which is kinda weird considering the topics were pretty different. (Zorby’s thread was about custom outfits, this thread is about Tonics being released as outfits.)

This is literally about just adding the classic town clothes as a free out fit….that’s it.

A dev decided to merge a completely different outfit suggestion thread into this one.

Admittedly, the one it merged to came first. =P
But yes, I support the Town Clothes as Outfit stance. (Obviously.) If they wanted to put in loads of extra work to make town clothes mix-and-match, that’d be awesome, but I really doubt they will. Outfit with refurbished dye channels isn’t hard to ask for.
And not just town clothes, but all the outfit pieces they sold as town clothes that are now tonics. I have a few I’d love to have dye channels on and use, so re-adding them as outfits (and actually selling them again) would be fantastic.

I’m not saying it didn’t. I was just clarifying since combining two entirely different suggestion threads leads to some confusion. xD
I’m all for town clothes tonics being outfits, as well! It’s seems kind of silly having made them into tonics in the first place.
At this point, it’s a little silly to have the assets in game and not capitalize on them.
The town clothes had dye channels before, and models are obviously still available, since the tonics use them.
As Outfits exist, there’s no more reason to assume that armor weight recognition means anything.
There weren’t that many tonics anyway, if I recall: Town clothes, khaki set, leather hoodie. I’m sure there were a few others that were sold (and subsequently refunded during the wardrobe change). Reintroducing those items as sets with dye channels is a short, easy way to farm up some gem revenue and foster a smidgen of good will to the players.
It’s a win-win, ANet. So, c’mon. C’moooon~

This right here is my problem with GW right now. It seems they have all these ideas and ways to improve the game to keep people playing, but when they forge ahead and break some of the stuff people liked, they never look back. I get that it takes resources to change the town clothes into outfits. Fine. I’d rather have a polished game with fewer features than a game with half-formed ideas that don’t really work anymore. They add up over time and the little things that didn’t bother me before become glaring and turn my attitude sour. How many bugged events are there that have essentially been that way from day 1? How big is the traits thread? This topic is recurring because tonics were a horrible solution. How many outfits have clipping issues at release? How many of these things have they ever gone back and reassessed?
So while I really do like the new features like wardrobes and the mini re-vamp, I would trade it for a game that even pretends like it gives a da@% about being a quality product.

I’m no historian, but it would be interesting to see how many day 1 bugs and issues have been fixed vs. how many are still around. I am pretty sure there are a number that have been fixed.
Anet does seem to forge ahead while leaving a trail of destruction though.
I want my Sylvari T0 Racial to be armor skins though. THEY CANT CLIP WITH ANYTHING! uggggh@*# flips a table

I suggested something like that recently and I’m sure we could incorporate town clothes skins to it.

If they do it for one, they can do it for all.
No half-hearted efforts!
According to the wiki, there’s around 17 tonics that could be converted.

The problem with tonic conversions is they created a ‘terrible’ one for the gatherer shorts. It has like giant moon boots and a big ugly shirt. Which…was what was so great about the mix-n-match system.
I’m offering to pay them money to create an outfit out of 3 old pieces of mix-n-match I had put together.

I’d also accept that! I had one of the hoodies and shorts for a sweet traveling look.
Which got destroyed by aviator pants and a long sleeve shirt, respectively. >.>"
I agree that all the town clothes which became tonics should have been outfits instead, and should now be converted to outfits.
If they can fix the weird combinations in the process that would be great, but even converting them as they are now would be a vast improvement over what we have now.
And since the sets are already made and modelled for each race, they all used to have dye channels, inventory icons etc. it seems like most of the work has already been done and it wouldn’t take much more to add them into the outfits system.
At the very least the starting ones all players got by default with cultural clothes should have been given back as part of the first leveling.
Get a character to the level at which they unlock the wardrobe, they get a mail with the ArenaNet logo and the outfit:
- Teaches players that messages from ANet have ANet’s logo.
- Teaches players how they’ll be getting stuff they buy from the gemstore.
- Allows players to learn and actually try the outfit feature.
- Gives them the first outfit that may tempt them into getting more.
It’s only benefits.
I really like this idea. I think it would be a really nice was to incorporate the old default town clothes into the new system, and I also think you’re absolutely right that it might get people to try the outfit system and therefore encourage them to buy more.
