More and more, lately, I’ve been running into “toys” sitting on top of Merchants, Bankers, Boss Treasure Chests, etc. Things such as the Pirate Canon, the Witches Cauldron, Boxes o’ Fun, and even food buffs. This is hi-lariously amusing for trolls, I guess, making it harder for people to access the NPC or reward. We even see our normally helpful Mesmers creating Portals on top of treasure chests, but at least that goes away quickly.

Of course, we can directly mouse-click on our target if it’s not completely buried under other player’s characters. This is not a life or death problem, and I can’t personally understand the mentality of the trolls. They must think that instead of rolling my eyes and breathing a gentle sigh of annoyance, that I am instead screaming at the top of my lungs, startling the neighbors and pulling out my hair.

Please, ANet, put a “buffer zone” around important NPCs and treasures that prevents players from depositing things directly on top of them. Don’t STOP them. Just move their toy (or buff or whatever) a short distance away where it doesn’t interfere.

For what it’s worth, I can’t understand the mentality of trolls either. They must have some pretty sad, pathetic lives if this is how they get their kicks…

That aside though, +1 for a “buffer zone” as you say. It wouldn’t even need to be that big of an area around said NPC’s or treasure chests.

I’ve noticed more and more of this, it is as if our society has turned into a bully culture, people mocking others telling them to look for a “safe place”, etc. I don’t know what to do about that, but your comment gives them the attention that they obviously are seeking in their pathetic lives.

I lost my temper once during Jormag, some jerk put an aviator box in where we sit and res each other so that we would hit it instead of res someone… they thought that they were so cute.

According to Gaile these acts are “pretty rare” and “many if not most are accidental.” If people are doing it to grief you should, “just move on and let it go.”

Good advice when playing a video game… Probably good life advice too.

I don’t do world bosses or leave the mists really but it does happen quite a bit at the banker. 2 steps to the left or right fixes it though, no longer than 5s so nothing worth getting mad about.

I mostly play for the new Free-For-All arena in PvP lobby.

Putting a bubble around npcs and treasure chests won’t fix the fact that that dude dropped and aviator chest on your friend that you were rezzing. Some people are just jerks. Theres probably no perfect solution in a game that has toys like these. It always annoys me when I’ve eaten a food with a metabolic primer and someone puts a tray where i dont expect it to troll and i eat it. It’s annoying, but I’d rather arenanet spent developer time making content rather than micromanaging flaws that annoy us.

the mentality of trolls is pretty simple: their acts made you think and talk about them, goal achieved

Every month or so, there’s been a post about this issue even though it’s been around (in various forms) since launch. The discussion usually goes the same way, with some people being puzzled by human nature (“why do some enjoy leaving a banana peel on the ground, even though they won’t see anyone slip on it”) and others being cynical beyond their years.

Various solutions are put forth, from the simplistic to the convoluted and include:

  • Do nothing; it’s not that big a deal, is it?
  • Teach people how to target the ‘nodes’ they want access to.
  • Change the priority order, so that ‘toys’ are always last after gathering nodes and chests and dialogue and so on.
  • Create a bubble preventing nodes from being placed near certain objects.
  • Put the account name of the player leaving the node, to name & shame them, and make it easier to report.
  • Autodetect people who put toys and merchants near nodes and starting banning frequent violators from the game. (I do not exaggerate.)

I don’t get the complaint … there are tons of locations for any given kind of terminal you want. No one is every going to ‘troll’ you out of access to anything.

If this is all about just getting attention, then they should be getting help for their sad excuse of a life, not playing video games…
No, I think this is more a case of certain small people acting jerks because they can… No other reason.
People tend not to act this way in RL because… guess what… there are actual consequences for their actions. Insert reasonable consequences for peoples actions in the game, and watch as those same people who get their jollies off being kitten-bags suddenly and miraculously learn to behave themselves…

It isn’t just “terminals”. What sparked my post tonight was a team effort (apparently) to block the Tequatl reward chest with a combination of “toys” on each side. I know I saw the Pirate Cannon and the Witches Cauldron at least. Those things stay up awhile. A deliberate attempt was made to block people from an event reward. THAT, I think, is a legitimate complaint. (Especially with that particular chest, which requires you to be VERY close to it to get the “[F] to Interact” prompt).

Once again, just an annoyance. I can simply mouse-click my target. And I know enough not to acknowledge the trolls in-game. No sense giving them the instant satisfaction they crave, when silence may make them decide it’s not as fun as they thought. But with incidents on the rise, ANet might want to look into doing something.

He mentioned World Boss chests, there are also certain things that there are only one of in the city. Maybe just lucky but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a toy in a place that would be too much hassle.

That has to be rare. For however many people there are that want to troll a defeated player(usually in PvE they either revive or ignore) then their supply of toys, you use it, it’s gone.
Kind of making me jealous, I wish Mist Escence was like that. In Stronghold theres nothing worse than putting on some stability going to commune only to have a downed pl;ayer right under the escence and you are stuck reviving when you want to commune.

Gaile is one of those really nice people who just can’t imagine there are many people who would purposefully grief others.

There have been many suggestions on how to fix this issue like making every vendor (chest, downed player…) have a “hit box” area where no other item can be spawned. Until Anet does something like this, I suggest filing a bug report every time you encounter this. Maybe that will show Anet how irritating it is.

“Don’t get to use the item that you already went out of your way to go to? No problem, take even more of your game time, and possibly some $, to go to yet another location and hope that this one is available for use. Cause there’s nothing wrong with this behavior.”

Except that in the OP’s situation it was a World Boss Chest…

So please tell us – I’m intellectually curious – how is that fun for you? You must be very easily amused, like an infant gazing wide-eyed at the mobile hanging over his crib.

Here’s a screen shot from tonight’s Tequatl. This is getting pretty commonplace. It doesn’t help that this particular chest makes you stand real close in order to collect from it.

To make matters worse, someone’s Job-O-Tron backpack was yakking all during the fight. Please, ANet. I’m here to fight dragons, not trolls.
