If I were to advertise in Guild wars 1 that I wanted to trade my guild wars 1 gold for someone’s guild wars 2 gold, could I be banned for “buying gold” after a trade takes place? It seems like buying gold constitutes using real-life money, rather than transferring money between games; though I just want to be sure before I do so since there would be “large sums” of money being transferred. I don’t want to be banned, and neither would the person on the other end!

Inter-game trading is not allowed(even if they are from same company) and IS BANNABLE.

You can’t advertise it in gw2 or gw it will get you a temp/perm ban, however you can do it and you will not be banned. There are sites devoted to trading items across games.

Anet likely didn’t want to remove the armor stats entirely because…well,
we’ve all seen what happens in games where there’s no disadvantage to taking your pants off.

Well the exchange rate would be a bit wonky in any case you’d probably be trading GW1 gold for GW2 copper.

So in other words, all things are legal as long as you don’t get caught.

Just don’t risk it.

Firstly, there’s the risk of losing your account.
Secondly, there’s the risk of the other person conning you as well.

No it isn’t. That’s not right at all. You’re not allowed to use this forum as market place. But this trade is not even an offense. It’s not supported, so if you get scammed you’re on your own. But in no way could this even lead to a reprimand.

Would I advise it? No. But if you and a close friend would want to do this trade there is nothing stopping you from doing so.

The Devs have this to say:

Gaile Gray

ArenaNet Support Liaison

The economies of each game are separate, and we do not support or condone the trading of items or gold across games.

Mmm. Thanks for that link! It’s surprising though because there’s nothing in the Rules of Conduct or the User Agreement that supports action from Anet as a result of such trade.

However, the moment Gayle wrote that post it generated a new rule that, as a result of the same user agreement, became binding on players once they learn of it. There’s still a world of difference between “condone” and “allow” (in terms of consequences) but I wouldn’t risk it

Probably this part of the RoC:

9. You may not buy, sell, transfer or auction (or host or facilitate the ability to allow others to buy, sell, transfer or auction) , or offer to transfer, sell or auction, or buy or accept any offer to transfer, sell or auction, any game Account or game Content, including (without limitation) game characters, character attributes, items, objects, currency, credits or copyrighted material, or any other intellectual property owned or controlled by ArenaNet, Inc., NCsoft, the Service, or our licensors, nor may you encourage or induce any other player to participate in such prohibited transaction(s), except as may be specifically authorized by the Service and by ArenaNet or NCsoft, without first obtaining our express written permission.

That would mean that if I like you and send you 2 gold, I am breaking the Rules of conduct. Because I’m transferring gold to you. So no, that’s not the purpose of that clause. The purpose of that clause is to disallow selling your account or parts of your account for real money. Which is strictly forbidden and is the bane of any MMO. This is different though, but the point is moot because of Gayle’s post. That post is an addition to the rules right there, no need to go further.

I can’t see any reason you would want to, the exchange rate would be so vastly different that what would you gain I know there are a few people that sill play both games but I don’t think the numbers are that high to support such a venture plus gold is so ezy to get in GW1, I just think this is a waist of your time
