Hey folks I have a question. And yes, I have searched already, but the forum search is weird and not very functional, so I didn’t find an answer.

I would like to trade a high priced item via in-game mail, to avoid the enormous TP fees. Don’t reply with anything resembling “But the TP is there to be used”, or “The fees are there for a reason” or anything the like, as I have heard that plenty already and it has nothing to do with my question. Thanks in advance.

My question has several parts.

1. Am I allowed to trade items via in-game mail?
2. I advertise in map-chat and people call me out as ‘scammer’ just because I do – if they actually report me for scamming do I get into trouble? (I am not scamming obviously)
3. If I find someone to actually trade with – am I responsible, if it turns out they got the gold they used to pay for my item by buying it from some shady website?
4. I would be send a huge amount of gold, I would send someone an item – will anet investigate me for gold trading simply due to the large sum that was mailed to me?

I’d really like clarification on this. It doesn’t happen very often that I come into the possession of an item that’s worth THAT much, that I have to think about avoiding fees In fact it’s my first time. But I’d like to know. Also for all the other people out there. I would of course record the entire transaction via a bunch of screenshots, just to be sure

2. Map chat is not for advertising, You are spamming and people will probably report you.
3. No, I highly doubt you will be responsible.
4. Most likely yes, you might also be auto-banned by the filter, and you will have to open up a ticket with support and explain your situation.

Just so you know, the transaction is on you. If anything goes wrong, Anet will not help you at all, so your screenshots will be useless.

1. Yes last time I checked. Not recommended though as you may get scammed. So you take the risk. I don’t think ArenaNet will do anything if you do get scammed also. You will also be hard pressed to find someone willing to trade due to the purposeful lack of COD system.
2. People may still be burned out from the WTB WTT WTS SPAM in GW1. I doubt you will get banned or suspended unless you actually do scam someone. (This is technically gray market.) Depending on how you do things you may get in trouble for spamming however.
3. No. Highly unlikely.
4. Maybe to possibly likely. Keep in mind the person selling you gold may not be able too. There are limits for mailing gold.

I am not spamming. I send my WTS message ONCE and ONCE only. Per day. I also wrote ‘scammer’ not ‘spammer’ Wondering if people reporting me for scamming just because they THINK I might be, could harm me in any way.

I would also not send the item, before I receive the gold. I don’t care if that scares people, because they have to trust me first – I know I am honest and they can either agree to sending me the money first or not. I am in no rush selling and if I can’t find a successful trade after a long time, I can STILL use the TP.

I had no idea, that there’s a limit on the amount of gold you can mail! See…it’s my first time XD That’s interesting. But I guess they would just have to send it to me in several mails then.

I would not suggest it for many of the reasons already stated. Plus if someone told me, “Send me some gold and I’ll mail you this sword, just trust me on this.” I’d laugh and go about my business. I imagine that type of issue is why it isn’t a good idea. Toss in that you or the buyer might get tagged by the cash 4 gold screen and you are just asking for disputes and problems.

Make a ‘buyer’ even slightly unhappy and get ready for a report and some dispute you will have to deal with.

If you don’t want to do it, don’t. Many people agree with you – but many don’t. I use the TP plenty of times a day and so far have never had to think about avoiding the fee – but 15% on an item over 500g is a LOT of gold I am losing…to a virtual company, that doesn’t even really exist. If it was 5%, I would gladly pay. I feel like that would be fine. But hey, I was super lucky with my drop and don’t feel like letting a non existent TP put fees on my luck for no reason.

There’s nothing wrong with that. Nothing wrong with not doing it either.

No reason to get defensive. You asked if there might be problems and people are giving you their thoughts on that. It seems you really didn’t come here looking for those thoughts so, hey, go for it. Just don’t post in the accounts forum when something goes wrong.

I don’t feel defensive at all. I just replied from the opposite view point from yours. I know of all the doubts people have, I am just getting tired of it. I understand – but at the same time I am trying to find a workable solution for both sides. Because I do want my gold and if someone can save a ton compared to TP in return, it IS a win-win situation for both of us.

That would get you an official answer that you could have documented in the event you run into problems. Good luck and I hope you get your gold.

That’s probably what I will go for – I am unsure about the rules, which is why I made this thread…I am not unsure about wanting to do it But I don’t want to risk my account, so if there is some rule I don’t know about, I’d like to know before doing something stupid…

Even though I know the chances are slim, I am hoping for a dev response to this, as I know I am not the only one wondering.

Remember, the devs aren’t tickled pink when you circumvent the mechanics they have put in-game. You aren’t the first person to ask about this, there have been threads before, and dev responses. It isn’t the best idea, but if you are willing to risk your item, and/or your account, there is nothing we can do. Remember, if an RMT-associated person buys your item, and you get caught in the net, you may end up losing your account. Also consider this: you had nothing, you found something that will net you 375 instead of 450 (or whatever), you are still 375 ahead of what you had. Instead of seeing it as what you will lose, you could look at it as what you will gain. Good luck, however you decide to proceed. =)

The big problem with trading with strangers by mail is trust. Do you send them the big-ticket item first? Do they send you the gold first? Do you ask for half first and half after? How does either of you know the other will follow through?

Those who accused you of scamming may be thinking you are trying to get people to send you gold, then not sending the item. They may think this because they have trouble envisioning you trusting something worth that much to the honesty of an anonymous stranger on the internet.

Now that’s the 100,000 dollar question! If you want to circumvent the TP to save taxes, then seems to me that you should be the one to take the risk. I just couldn’t risk that myself.

View the TP fees as a risk management/insurance premium against the likelihood of getting scammed. Using the TP eliminates the risk.

i recommend doing in face to face in real life.

i.e. “guild wars 2 gold” on delivery.

get 2 laptop computers.
meet up in a place with wireless internet connection.

and use the guild vault to make the transaction.

To all of you, who say “Use the TP” or “I would never use in game mail” – I know. I am not asking for anybodys opinion if or if not one should use in game mail for trading high valued items. I know there are pros and cons for both sides. I merely wanted to know, what you guys could say to those 4 points I made in my first post

To those of you asking, if I would send the item first: No. I wouldn’t. Why do you think I should? The person trading with me gets as much a bargain as I get more gold – I will of course sell it for a bunch less, than the lowest offer on TP (say…30-50g less), which makes it a win-win.
I will be asking the first step of trust of my trade partner and it just doesn’t matter, what anybody else thinks in this regard: as long as I find ONE person, willing to pay first and then receive their item, it will be fine. If I don’t find someone, I don’t…but I have already received a bunch of offers, so I don’t think that nobody is willing to put some faith in me

I am currently waiting on the customer support reply email, I asked the same questions there. I’d like an official answer I can fall back on, in case I do go through with it and then get insta banned for gold trading accusations. I am not rushing this decision, but I find it very interesting to read the various points people make. As long as you don’t try to tell me, that I have to be a scammer just because I explore this way…XD
