Trait locking
People were complaining that there was too little “progression” for their characters. So here you go, you have progression now.
This new trait locking system is absolutely hideous, its one thing to lock a few traits or charge a little to unlock them but now it costs 45g (13g + 15g for the old ones and another 15g for the new ones) to unlock them all.
Sure you can run around doing stuff to unlock them too but these are TRAITS you need them to play your character, thus we are now grinding for our characters.
Its not to bad for me since I have nearly all the professions and have been playing for a while but imagine starting from scratch? Also to get the skill points to buy those traits guess what people are going to NEED to do, grind champ trains, grind karma trains or maybe grind event trains.
Anet this a very stupid move on your part and completely out of sync with your stated goals for this game at launch.
While I will agree that this trait system can be very frustrating to some people, but I will not agree that you are grinding for your character. Traits are buffs and new additions to your character to help them get stronger; that you would need to prove your worth or gain “experience” to be able to do these things seem logical to me (though many will disagree).
As for the skill points, you don’t “NEED” to run trains or farms or whatever. There is never a “NEED” to any of those. There may be a desire (one that is foreign to me) but never a “NEED”. And even if one feels they “NEED” to do those, those activities requires the least amount of skill, simply running with the crowd and doing tagging the appropriate mobs.
GW2 lacks the depth to merit the doling out of what are “core” parts of the Professions in the game.
Unlike TSW, GW2 is rather spartan-like when it comes to customizing your Profession build.
Yanking core traits away and placing them behind level, skill point/gold price and content walls reveals how truly anemic the Professions are without their mojo.
Outside of paying the “optional” and spectacularly high Gold and Skill Point costs, the tasks required to unlock Traits are woefully ill-suited and out of sync with the average player’s progression.
Not to mention that, while more or less affordable to do for one character, it’s prohibitively expensive to do so for all characters. An account-wide system might be better there.
I honestly don’t mind doing a specific event once or twice to unlock something, but waiting for the temple of Grenth pres etc. or swimming to the same chest in Straits x9? No. Just… no. I can think of more fun, productive and rewarding things I could be doing in game.

Thanks, made this thread because I couldn’t find one already here about this problem.
Well not to be the devil’s advocate but when removing repair costs on gear it was stated that the money sink would be shifted.
smack..Wut?…smack…smack…

And if it were the least bit comparable in cost I’d agree. That, however, is far from the case here.
