This is regarding the new trait stuff. I read that you can re-train everything you had if you are level 80. I haven’t actually tried yet, but I believe it, from the numbers I see.

But, I can’t understand why you would ever NOT do that.

I suspect ANet thinks there is a reason, because otherwise why didn’t they just train you in everything during conversion (for level 80s).

Can anybody think of a reason to bank hero points?

My guess is you can bank them for HoT and use them on new specializations or traits or whatever else ANet decides we can spend them on =p

becasue it would be using the same system to do it for character that are lvl 80, and characters that aren’t level 80, and in the case of the non level 80… well since of the HUGE changes to skills and traits how are the system to determine exactly what you should ahve trained or not here?

Soren, I suspect something is coming.

Gummi, it’s clear I wasn’t clear. Let me try again:

If I chose, I could (on one of my level 80s) train every skill and trait in the list.

My question is why would I NOT do that?

If there’s no answer to that, then my follow-up question is why didn’t ANet do it for me during conversion.

I understand lower-level characters needed special-casing, but this refers to level 80s only.

It came up because I hadn’t done my ranger’s yet (forgot), and I was in VW. I always turn on my condition-remove skill when in VW, but I couldn’t because I was no longer trained in it. I had to wait until the battle was over to fix it. So, it made me wonder why ANet chose to not train some things, but they did do others, when they could have simply given me all that I had before.

To let you choose to either use all on unlocking everything, or save for HoT updates.

My guess is it was too time-consuming/difficult to code a different system for level 80 and level 1-79 characters and they decided it wasn’t worth the time it’d take.

Or they simply didn’t think of it. I saw an article the other day talking about how much of good design is simply realising that something needs to be done, or done differently and how it can be surprisingly difficult when you’re in the middle of something.

I’m going with the first answer. If you leveled to 80 and never did a skill challenge (hero challenge) you would end up with enough to unlock everything, but only enough to unlock everything. So lets say you unlock three trait lines and two skill lines. You still have plenty of the points to unlock two more trait lines and however many other skill lines, three I guess.

HoT is released and you want to make your character the elite specialization. You still haven’t done any hero challenges, for whatever reason, maybe you only WvW or PvP. So you only have as many points as you can get at 80. But you didn’t spend them all, so you have a bunch to spare. You spend them on the Elite Speciazation and the Elite Spec skill line. You haven’t done any extra work, but you have enough points to jump right into the new content.

Thanks, guys.

3 of my 80s have the mapping title, and the others are all quite a ways through it. So, they likely have plenty of hero points.

I’m just worried that if I do the obvious and train everything, then I’ll be missing out on something later. But, there doesn’t seem to be any way to know right now. I wish ANet would chime in with specifics about what we’ll be able to buy or not buy with hero points.
