Traitcosts
Or.. you can actually do the requirements to get them instead of buying them. I’ve only bought the traits I truly needed right then and there. The rest I got through maps and whatnot.
The OP is right though, this doesn’t make the game better.
It doesnt really matter for me because the characters I play already every trait unlocked from pve, but I thought the point of spvp was that you could buy the game, make a level 1 toon, go to the mists, and be 100% on the same footing as any other player there. Guess that was abandoned already.

Concept of trait hunting is really fun and sounds good, but not in the way it’s implemented now.
Maybe if they change it somehow, not sure how.
I’m leveling a new charactet, will buy the essential ones, but will hunt the rest, just to make leveling a bit different. I plan 100% map with this toon so will just come in the way.

I Spvp you have all the traits and skills, except the new ones.

Doesn’t that depend on ones point of view?
Personally I for one prefer the old-school GW1 style to obtain them (it was also something that people had been demanding more or less since release) and if you don’t you can simply buy them.

You might have to pay for traits, but most people spent well more than 28g on refunding their traits to change their build. So call it even

The way it stands now, it really doesn’t depend on your point of view.
Perhaps if the traits didn’t link to events that were often bugged, it would be different. There’s no one that has the point of view that it’s fun waiting for bugged events or server resets. Or the ones that involve waiting around in the Cursed Shore for an event to start that might never start unless people fail a different event.
The current implementation forces PvPers to PvE or grind forever to be on an event footing with people who don’t have to do that. It forces people to spend money and skill points our do events like the grub in WvW, which is hard to do if you’re not a social guy like me.
You know, I can get a bunch of guys together to do it, but it’s not good for the game.
Too many aspects of the new system kitten off too many players. if six guys think it’s good, over all it’s still bad for the game.
I agree that working to get traits isn’t a bad thing. I like that part of it, but some of the decisions made about which events unlock stuff…it definitely needs work.
I’m confused. The wiki says all core Traits are unlocked (14 points) in PvP (Mists). If the OP isn’t referring to Traits in PvP, then as others have said, one does have a choice for unlocking some or all of the Traits without cost.
Some may be irksome, and readily avoided by paying, but it isn’t necessary to buy every single one at a cost of 28Gold and Skill points. Not sure a ‘beginner’ needs every Trait unlocked. I’ve never unlocked any I don’t use. But, that’s me.
He didn’t say SPvP so he might be talking about WvW. I just think the trait system is right in its heart, but not well done in its execution.
This is no where near the level of what GW1 had with elite skill hunting and attribute point quests.
(both of which, in my opinion, were a nuisance, and I don’t understand why people loved it so much, even as a 7 year gw player)
But these traits were horrendously set up. They should have made all adept and master traits free, while Grandmasters should be either bought or earned.

The new trait system is atrocious and almost makes me want to quit the game. There’s basically an entire thread here complaining about the new trait system: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Game-Updates-Traits/first
It definitely is unfair to new players. Definitely slows the game down. And it is definitely NOT a good solution to just “go for the traits you want.” How the hell are you supposed to know for sure the traits you want?
