Pretty sure I read somewhere that you click on them to convert them, which sounds to me like you’ll still have the item but can’t use it normally, maybe?

Pretty sure the old transmutation system will be fully removed in favor of the wardrobe.
Aren’t they currently used by double-clicking?
Yes, so you can’t use them anymore after the patch.
