Transmutation Charges
They already allowed us to convert all our stones for charges at a 3:1 ratio. If you want more charges, please feel free to purchase some from the Gem Store.
The OP is talking about how, previously, transmuting items level 79 and below was a third of the cost it is today post-patch. The game was friendlier to characters who used low level armour and weapons, allowing them to cheaply experiment with their style and/or maintain the same style as they updated their gear’s effectiveness every 5-10 levels.
There are many things that I am okay being charged a fee for, but transmuting is not one of them.
Joote: You can earn transmutation charges in the game with a little effort (eg. completing maps), so you need never buy them. In fact, previously it was quite difficult to transmute level 80 gear without using the gem store, so the patch was a boon for people who’d been hoarding their transmutation stones.

^ That. I do actually prefer the current system, minus the part where we’re screwed on runes. For skins, though, it’s much better.
And yes, I’m someone who used to use a crapton of the low level stones on alts as I was leveling them. Still like the change.

Yes true. But one of my pet likes is being able to try out new skins on a regular basis. My transmutation charges would not last me very long if I did.
So, the fact that I need any sort of transmutation device, payed for, or collected, rather than have it as a regular skill, has taken away from me one large chunk of fun, and replaced it with frustration.
It’s somewhat like making the player pay for every spell that they weave, or every arrow that they loose.

But now you can buy a costume skin and level as many alts as you want in style, just by selecting a checkbox and with no hassle of transmuting armor every 5-10 levels. I call that a bargain.

Depends if you want to spend ££ on a costume, hundreds of gold on gems or even like the costumes in the first place.
I have bought thousands of gems, and spent them on lots of things that I don’t begrudge. But I will not spend ONE gem on transmutation, as I believe it’s a internal part of the game and therefore should be free. Anything else smells of greed and trickery.

It is free as a integral part of game-play.

Transmutation has always cost money, though. Transmutation crystals were incredibly rare if you didn’t buy them in the gem store.

I did too, mostly because there was literally nothing else you could do with them.
I agree with OP. A transmutaion charge is about 2.5g right now. NO low level would afford that. Maybe free is the wrong definition. I’d say you should add more transmutation charges:
Everyone gets their TC x 8. A lv10 item requires 1 TC, a lv40 requires 4 and a 80 requires 8 charges. So you wouldn’t have to cry when using them at lower levels.

Just pm me for my advice! Always eager to help!”
I hope that someday ANet will make transmutation free :C
Perhaps the solution is simple, get 2-3 charges for map completion like how it was before the patch? 1 is just cruel.
Create a toon, run through each city and collect transmute charges. Delete toon, create another. Run through each city and collect transmute charges. Repeat until you have enough.
Or just suck it up and spend $10 on gems once in a while. Remind yourself that there’s no monthly fee to rent the game you bought.
