Transmutation Charges: Why This System?

They gave us the wardrobe system to give us free access to skins we have previously owned. AMAZING idea for a system, I absolutely love the idea and I applaud anet for thinking of this but of course there is one thing wrong with it: transmutation charges. Personally I feel this aspect detracts from the potential the wardrobe has as a system for people to customize their characters to the fullest extent. Because its not like you pay to set a look and you keep that look while still being able to replace equipment, no you have to transmute EVERY SINGLE PIECE of equipment that you get. So if you decide to change your setup and go for a different spec or you’re a leveling character and you get some better equipment you end up blowing through your charges so fast you end up just being discouraged from using the wardrobe at all purely based on the expenses of the charges every time you get a better piece of equipment. So all I am asking is either a revamp of how the charges work or a complete removal of charges. Yes I understand anet wants to make more money but having a free customization system like this would encourage more people to play and would eventually be a mutual benefit for both anet and the player base.

Share your thoughts but please be constructive. Do you agree with me? Whatever your answer please state why as I hope to have meaningful discussion and if a developer reads this I am actually quite curious as to why this system of using charges was selected so if you have time to answer it would be greatly appreciated. As always, thank you for your contributions

No. Just go exploring cities. Each zone gives a transmutation charge. If you have a spare character slot, create a new character, explore all 5 cities, delete. Rinse and repeat and you have plenty of charges.

Previously exploration would give you 3 of the level 1-79 trans items, which now equate 1 charge. Once you get the pattern down, you can explore all 5 cities in as little as 40-45 minutes.

I don’t think ArenaNet ever claimed the Wardrobe was a system to facilitate free skin application, but rather an update to the existing Transmutation system.

Per the Knowledge Base:

What is my Guild Wars 2 Wardrobe?

Wardrobe is a new transmutation system in Guild Wars 2. It replaces the system previously used for transmutations.

I think people heard Wardrobe and imagined a different kind of system than that which the Developers envisioned and implemented.

I find the Wardrobe to be ever so much more convenient, especially where HoM skins are concerned, and easily trying out new looks on my characters. It’s fantastic (for me) for newly created characters. =)

Yes we did, and we’d probably prefer the one we imagine (Free reskins for unlocked skins!) And, if they make it so Area Completion transmutation charges automatically stick to the character that does it (Preventing farming), they’ll probably get more sales of charges that way as well:
People like buying permanent stuff, and don’t like spending real money on temporary things. Knowing that every charge we spend remains useable enables us to spend charges on appearances we may not be completely ‘sold’ on, knowing we can always come back to it if we decide we like it later, like a dormant Guild Wars account.
While most people currently try to go for a single look (or two or three if they can be bothered to keep that many complete outfits), allowing free reskins allows us to explore new combinations and appearances. Without the fear of "losing’ an appearance, we can be more bold in trying out new looks and collecting usable skins.

I haven’t leveled anything in a long while and I just decided to get back on my level 30 Ele and it hit me. I’m not going to be able to change my outfit like I was used to when leveling to look how I want do to the new system. Back when I had 230 regular transmutation stones it was “LoL who cares” and I’d change my look dozens and dozens of times while leveling. Despite having over 70 charges, I don’t feel like using the majority of them on one character while leveling. A definite downside to an otherwise great idea in the wardrobe system.
