I’m sure there are still a few people out there who are still a bit confused about the new transformation system, so my post intends to make it both easy to understand and to deal with an additional issue that has come to my attention this morning. The following is intended for newbies, as I’m sure experienced Guild Wars 2 players already know this. In the past if you came into possession of a piece of armor or a weapon which had better stats and a higher defense rating than the one you were currently equipped with a player could purchase a yellow transformation stone and would use it to merge two items (of the same type with different appearances) so that one item’s appearance could be merged with the superior stats of the other. Under the new system, the way in which this is done has changed and is much simpler.
Now if you have a item with superior stats you must do the following:
(a) Make sure that the item that you wish to use the APPEARANCE of has had the skin unlocked. To do this, click on that item and see if the option for unlocking the skin has been grayed out. If it has, the skin has already been added to your skins library. If it is in white, you can click on it and unlock that skin, but in doing so the item that has the skin applied to it will be account bound to your account (meaning that only you can use it). Once the skin has been unlocked, we can proceed.
(b) Open the HERO panel and go to the appropriate armor or weapons slot and clicking on that item with the right-mouse key, select from the menu that appears the item you wish to upgrade the appearance of. Do not worry at the moment that the appearance of that item is unsuitable, as we will adjust this in a moment.
© Now select from the available options from the top-left of the HERO screen (equipment, wardrobe, dyes) the one you wish to update from. If you wish to change the appearance of armor, select wardrobe. If you wish to change the appearance of a weapon, select equipment.
(d) Now left-mouse click on any piece of currently equipped armor/weapon (depending on the choice you made earlier) and every other compatible skin for that item will be shown in a window to the immediate left within the HERO panel. To choice a new appearance for armor or weapons, simply left-click on any item in that window and it’s skin will be previewed on your character. If the change in appearance appeals to you, simply use the dialogue window which appears on the right which reads, “These changes will cost # transmutation charges.” You have the option of choosing to comply APPLY or RESET.
You may also receive a message informing you that you do not have sufficient transmutations. In order to change the appearance of any item, you must purchase transmutation stones (the yellow ones). Once purchased, double-click on them until they are added to your account as ‘credit’. Once you have pressed APPLY the selected armor or weapon will take on the look of the skin you have chosen. To finalize it, simply close the window.

I noticed while clearing out my bank deposit slots today that I had several ORPHANED items. These were previously soulbound items or armor or weapons which belonged to now deleted characters. It is my suggestion that ArenaNET change the game so that any items which were previously soulbound and which were placed in the bank automatically be converted to account bound so they can be used by other characters in your possession.
