Transmutation Splitters and 2x Transmutations
It better! I would think atleast 50% of the people who transmuted their legendaries, did it atleast twice
My understanding is they split the source of the skin and the item currently providing the stats.
I don’t see it reaching back through time to double check all the versions its ever been – just the current skin and stats.
I wonder what your basis for comparison is…”

It’s largely a guess but the way I’d expect them to work is to look at the two files/groups of files the item uses – the skin and the stats, use that to link them to the original items in the database and then offer you the other half of the ‘set’.
So for example if you have a legendary skin and exotic stats you’ll be offered the stats from the legendary and the skin of the exotic. The one you lose will be the other set of exotic stats which is no longer a part of the item.

I see both possibilities as plausible. I suppose it hinges on whether the data being pulled is from the skin source (meaning it would correctly split a legendary that has been transmuted more than once), or if its pulled from the two items that were used to to create the item you want to split. Me thinks we need Lindsay’s input on this one...

I don’t see how the second option is possible without Anet wasting a lot of memory to store currently useless data.
What people who transmuted a legendary more than once current have is a legendary skin +a set of non-legendary (I assume exotic) stats. All traces of the other item are gone. Unless the game saves a record of the entire history of every items transmutations there would be no way to go back to that intermediary step.
And since that data would be utterly useless until this update and there would be a lot of it taking up a lot of memory I really can’t see them doing that.

According to the item on gw2db.com:
Double-click to separate a transmuted item into the two base items it is made from. If the target item has been transmuted more than once, only the current appearance item and the current stat item will be recovered.

The more I think about it I’m pretty sure you’re right.

If that’s accurate than no worries. The current appearance item (i.e the Legendary skin) is all that really matters here, meaning it would be recovered as long as its maintained throughout multiple transmutations.
Thanks guys.
Excuse me for the noob question:
If i have aetherized rifle skin used on an exotic rifle, can i use this splitter stone to have back the “aetherized rifle skin” only (to apply it on my ascendent rifle)?

We don’t know if the splitters will work on weapon skins (aetherized, fused, jade, ect.) my guess will be that they won’t. However you can still use a transmutation crystal and transmute your aetherized rifle skin over your ascended rifle.
