So, I am a little confused about this. I have the spinal blades back, exotic. I want to change this to the ascended version later, but I don’t like the way it looks. If I transmute it, I can’t use it in the forge anymore. Can’t I just transmute it back?

Actually that tool-tip is incorrect and an artifact from the old transmutation system.

All transmuted items work as their original item in the forge. You can test this for yourself by putting a transmuted item into the forge and hovering over the item will show a tool-tip explaining that it will function as the original item.
