Anyone else ever feel trapped with a given character or profession? I guess I should explain. Way, way back at release I opted to roll a thief, and for….reasons, I deleted it and rerolled as an engineer. Everything was great for a while; I completed the story, did all the dungeons, hit max level, and really enjoyed the profession. But not so much anymore, for….reasons, I am growing less and less interested in playing the profession, but as a hard-core role player I have to have a main of a certain gender, race, and name, so just rolling an alt isn’t enough; I need that character to be my main.

An arbitrary and self-imposed dilemma, I admit, but it is what it is, and we all play the game how we each see fit. That is simply my style. The problem is however that I am much too invested in this character to just give him up and start over. Not so much because of the level or story, but rather all the little things I don’t want to lose. Several event based back items, a full set of celestial armor, those event based gloves from Flame and Frost, abyss dye, some ascended accessories, and most distressing; a full armor skin I bought from the gem store. In short I put lots of time, effort, gold, and real world cash into this character, and I don’t want to just give all that up.

But I can pretty much confirm that the reasons I am growing tired of the engineer basically won’t be fixed, and that just kills any desire I have to play the game anymore. I just feel completely trapped with my profession, unable to just start over, unable to simply change to something better. And that feeling of being trapped is hurting my enjoyment of the game a heck of a lot more than the engineer’s growing problems.

You’re lucky to be in the right game. Like an Asura once said : “Think inside the box”. Tired of playing the way you’re playing ? (Which is surely DPS). Well here’s your time to change and switch build. Since you have Celestial Items, you won’t have to change your gear.

If you’re a certain build, try to play with some skills and traits, you might be surprised at how polyvalent the gineer is.

I have an engineer too and on the top of my head I can think of at least 3 ways of playing it without even knowing the class too much.

Remember, think inside the box and have fun trying things out and toying with the skills.

*Elixirs: Unreliable due to RNG
*Turrets: More than 20 bugs and don’t attack world bosses
*Gadgets: Underpowered and overly situational
*Kits: I’ve been using kits for six months and just plain sick of them
*Rifle: Better as a control weapon rather than damage, forcing you to rely on the above flawed skill types for damage
*Pistols: Balanced for a level of condition damage they do not apply
*Shield: The only worthwhile weapon the engineer has
*Cosmetic progression: Non-existent due to kit dependency
*Developer attention to our issues: Next to none because we’re only 10% of the community

Trust me, I’ve tried every build with the engineer; they are either under powered, bug ridden, or too situational to be of use in PvE. And the worst part is that no one at Arena Net gives a skritt’s butt about engineer balance or bugs. That was proven when it took them almost a year (in spite of countless threads) to even acknowledge that the scope trait was bugged, let alone bother to fix it.

MMMM ok so here’s my solution

Your character has found a scroll that was hidden deep within the great collapse and has only come to light due to the excavation and construction of the pavilion in Divinity’s Reach. The scroll actually reads that you were not alone at birth and you have a twin brother that was taken away at birth by the charr when they declared they would seek revenge. You were saved, hidden by your parents,

Since finding this out you have travelled Tyria in search of your long lost twin, when you finally found him you find he has been transmuted into a spark and the only way for him to survive is for you and he to become one. You seek out a potion that can will fuse your brother to yourself, in doing so you have now created a split between your true self and a mutated form of yourself and your newly discovered twin with a similar name

…….. now you can also misbehave and blame it on your twin

Well push yourself to play something else! cause really nothing is stopping you from rerolling but yourself. You say that the reason you have this dilemma is because it is simply your style but I think its time you try and change that style.

You know we do have FIVE char slots for a reason. Don’t simply KILL your engineer, just take a break and roll a new char.

You are aware that they will be working on new weapons in future right? Also before that they are probably going to share some of the current weapons around to other classes. So just have patience and wait until you can see what else we can get to play with.

Since when did this business of being a hero become being a business?

I have 15 char slots, and i recently chose to just choose 2 to gear and get cool skins for, my Engi and ranger. While 15 slots is excessive, (i know) i enjoy multiple play styles and dont like being at a disadvantage simply because someone only plays 1 class and i play 5

And that does what to address the issue of all the soul-bound, one-of-a-kind event items I would lose access to?

I leveled 5 to 80, picked 3 to play exclusively. That 3 has changed but one has stuck around: My thief. I dont even necessarily like the thief more than say my mesmer. Like you, its an attachment to the time invested in a character. I hear you.

Tough choice. If the game is truely “play how you want” then you should have no problems rolling a new character, leveling, and enjoying all that comes into the game.

You’re looking at it the wrong way….

You seem to be completely focused on the best possible build, which is always going to be one specific build. That does NOT mean the others are not viable. You may kill things slower, but in exchange you get to experience a completely different playstyle.

If you limit yourself only to the best, most effective build for any given class then you will be bored out of your mind.

Play the other weapons/builds for….and here’s where it may get confusing for you….FUN! There is no build that will make your character unable to complete content. They just won’t let you complete it as fast/efficiently, but that’s the fun! Taking the road less traveled!

I won’t stop because I can’t stop.

It’s a medical condition, they say its terminal….

I think you misunderstand where I am coming from; I do play for fun and my own enjoyment. I was using a flamethrower/elixir gun build back before the big class update when everyone started doing it. I was I dislike grenades so I don’t use them for that reason, in spite of everyone assuring me they are the best engineer damage option, and I loved my flamethrower back in a time when everyone was assuring me that it was underpowered and worthless.

The problem is I simply don’t like the rifle, I don’t like the pistols, I don’t like turrets because of all the bugs, and I am growing bored with kits. Furthermore I don’t like the engineer anymore because Arena Net blatantly ignores all its problems and there is absolutely no endgame (and in a game wherein “endgame” is about cosmetic progression that means someone, somewhere, did something very, very wrong). And on a side note, I am getting to the point where I don’t like the game in general because every single one of the professions we have I either see as “meh” or fundamentally broken. (Don’t get me started on the thief. Seriously; you don’t want to go there.)

Transmutation splitter, or transmutation crystal. You can turn ANYTHING from soulbound, to account bound. Simply transmute it to a white item, then transmute that white item (with desired skin) to the new exotic/ascended item.

It can be done with anything, even legendaries, special level 1 items (like thief hood, elementalist head elementals, guardian pauldrons, and necro glowy eyes.

If it doesn’t work file a ticket. Even that would still be better than just sitting there and mopping. At least you could move on, in the worst case, and if everything works as it should you can move the items to your new char.
