Troll Merchants
I’ve noticed this in Silverwastes as well as after Octovine event, where someone puts a merchant inside every Grand Chest. It’s more of an issue in the Silverwastes since the click box for that chest is smaller- the Grand Chests are pretty easy to click properly even with a troll merchant present, it’s the pressing “F” that gets caught.
It can even be worse, a few people even use Box of Fun at chests, merchants and others interactable NPCs or objects. Pretty annoying indeed.
Agreed.
However, to get around it, try clicking on the actual chest. Usually you can select it because the centers (hotspots) are at different elevations.
There have been a lot of threads about this. Just not recent ones. It’s an old issue but seems they don’t have a fix for it. There have been plenty of suggestions in other threads. Everything from a report option to disabling in certain areas.
Agreed.
I would like to get a personal perma merchant in the future, but if this “feature” is still in there, I don’t want it if it could potentially grief people. There’s absolutely no reason to create an NPC for cluttering other people.
for there you have been and there you will long to return.
I’d like to include that to bank areas and auction area. People put their merchants, pets, boxes right in the way I don’t really understand it, but its annoying.
it’s been suggested before to not let everyone else even see perma personal merchants much less try to talk to them only to get a cold shoulder.
don’t do anything so drastic as not allowing their summoning near places. that’s just going to produce bugs. just make it so everyone besides the summoner can’t even see them (they can’t talk to them anyways).

It’s no longer just merchants. I’ve seen people dropping food trays right on top of objectives. Trolls will do anything to cause as much trouble as they can, even if it just a makes you have to click twice or such.

but… but… that just delays like 1/2 second. if they just double-click, they’ll consume the food then loot the chest. how is that effective?

I made a post about this the other day.
What they need to do is have ANY player-spawned NPC tagged with the name of the player that spawned it. That way, it can be reported. The problem right now is that you have no idea who summoned them.
It would also allow people to add that persons account to their block list. Because these idiots love to spawn these items at popular chests/nodes/npc’s, etc they would rapidly find themselves added to a large portion of the playerbases block list, and shut out of doing stuff.
Its not just perma merches either, so making it so that only the summoner could see it wouldn’t work. The one on the nightmare chest today was a regular merch usable by anyone. I still think the best option would be to block anything that could block a chest from being spawned within a radius of it.
Then you have portals on the chest at the Steam Ogre in Metrica that’ll port you off the platform.
It’s amazing how many ways players have figured out to troll others in PvE when PvE was designed around the notion of co-op and wanting to see other players.

As far as reporting them goes.... where in tos does it say someone can’t use a merchant, or guild banner, or anything else in spots that annoy you? how would this be a report-able offense?? Just do like everyone else and don’t feed the trolls.

It’s in the TOS to not harrass or grief players. ANet would still be writing the TOS if they had to write down every single possible variant.
Players who spawn them on the chests or what not with the intent of being malicious are reportable if you find out who did it.
But it could be the player looted the chest and then spawned a merchant without realizing that it could go right on top of the chest. Or a Box of Fun, or other such item that would be useful AFTER the fight.
So don’t assume that all merchants on chests are out of spite, could just be a player who didn’t stop to think about what would happen.
Now the players who drop the feasts on the chest after the fight is over, yea, those are very likely griefers. But it could also be someone who had a loot bag next to a feast and tried to open it, but then realized they double clicked their feast they were saving to deploy at Teq.
People do this for two reasons:
- By accident: they didn’t realize it would be in anyone’s way.
- On purpose: they did it to get a reaction, like people posting in the forums.
There are two things we can do:
- Complain to ANet and wait for them to do something. Could be as simple as changing the [f] priority or creating more than two types of interact (currently, limited to ‘loot all’ and ‘everything else’).
- Work around the issue. There are a couple of key ones:
- As noted above, re-angle and click to select the intended object.
- My preferred method: create a hotkey for ‘next ally’ — the game treats most non-damageable objects as a type of ally, so pressing the hotkey cycles through all the nearby ones, including nodes, doors, and NPCs.
F11 → Control Options → Targeting → Next Ally
Set a key for this and then you can easily select the object you want to interact with no matter how much stuff is stacked in the same location.
Personal trade npc on top of bank npc everyone uses… You have a special place in hell whoever does this.

Griefing is reportable and is a punishable offense, you just need to mail support about it (since there’s no general report category). In most cases it can be easily recognized whether someone placed the mechant/box of fun/portal/food tray there for trolling, or not.
It’s just currently it’s hard to see who is responsible. Having an owner name visible (let’s say as a second line below object/npc name, when you target it) would help immensely, all what you’d need would be a screenshot then.

I am not sure how old this problem is in PVP but I am seeing it there too now. That is enemy mesmers placing portals on your downed allies so it makes it harder to res them.
Surely in PvP we should not see the use portal option for the enemy team right?

Are you sure your dead teammate wasn’t the mesmer that dropped the portal as an escape and just died prior to using it, sabotaging his own rez?
As for the other instances, trolls suck. That said, does auto-loot (through tyrian masteries) work on the chests? I thought it did, but maybe I was just imagining it.

Auto loot does work on the old meta boss chests, but not chests you need a key to open, such as the Greater Nighmare Pod chest in the Silverwastes labyrinth.
ANet may give it to you.
The fix should be easy, make the chest action higher priority than the talk action. It’s just bad design, you even get NPCs trolling you at the mystic toilet in LA where you “greet” them as they walk past!
Anet aren’t going to fix this because they’re the biggest culprit. How many times have you gone up to a crafting station or bank and found some static or randomly wandering npc getting in the way? How long have we been listening to the insane violets lady? Or the SW guy talking about mordremoth attacking the pale tree? They want to drive us mad around the free service centres so we’ll be forced to buy personal banking golems and merchants. It’s a conspiracy I tell you.

I guess I still need to confirm this. I have not been pvping a lot recently but I have begun it for the last couple of days again. This happened to me twice yesterday in 2 games in a row. I am pretty sure that at least 1 of those games we had no Mesmer on my side.
But as I said I will have to double check it. As, if this is the case, what a REAL pain to deal with and a very, very, very bad way to troll/cheat in a way.
