Troll players on Octovine
Firsthand reported sightings of a brand-new, elusive yet troublesome species.. is this confirmation of a new class/race currently being beta test ??

If you see it happening again, take screen shots and submit a report to ANet. Sometimes it’s hard to tell if it’s trolls or if it’s people who don’t understand the mechanic. Although the content is old by MMO standards (> 1 year), it’s new to new players and even some veterans who never bothered with it before.

Yes it is hard to tell if they are trolling or just new. Once in a while I can understand but happening multiple times a night on consecutive days during a game holiday. As they say, once just happens, twice is a coincidence but three times is a pattern.
I was just suggesting a defensive strategy that would prevent burning maps on purpose or even accident. East is always fast to burn down to a low percentage which makes it ripe for one or two people to easy burn it early. Most of the time North makes a good push afterwards which puts it in the same boat. Keeping east at 50% until south and west are below 50% would help prevent that.
Yeah, I’ve been on maps where this is happening. I doubt it’s new players who don’t understand, unless they are completely ignoring mapchat. I’ve never been in an Octovine where someone isn’t freaking out the moment one of the sides hits lower than 15%.
Tonight we had a reset because West (West) ~magically~ burned from 50% to nothing in a single phase, and during the reburn a couple of people at North were blatantly stripping the Octovine of slime and trying to burn before South was ready. After the past few days, I can’t help but think the trolls are branching out a bit.

I can guarantee to you there are players who completely ignore map chat and that new players don’t understand and try to burn too soon. I’m not saying it’s likely in the cases mentioned in this thread, especially not if it’s happening with increasing frequency.
About a month ago I happened to be in Octovine with an experienced guildie and someone who just started getting into the new maps. The newbie assumed that the goal was to kill each Octovine and move on to the next. The newbie also couldn’t make sense of the information in /map (since it included jokes and whining and panicked microaggressions, as well as useful info). I doubt it was an isolated case, because I’ve seen similar cases during Octovine and elsewhere.
Put it this way: since we all know how common it is that many players don’t know the basics of crowd control or the defiance bar, shouldn’t we assume that there are also many who don’t yet understand major event chains and finale (aka meta events)?
(That doesn’t address the issue that the OP wants to raise — it just means it’s more difficult to spot trolls than it seems.)
It may or may not be deliberate trolling.
It can get quite chaotic in these fights so it’s easy to overdo it and it can be tricky to make sense of chat, especially when the temperature rises. I’ve seen a couple of times where everyone stopped “just in time” and then condi’s killed the vine. I’ve also seen a few people not be aware of which fight they are in so yelling at east to stop may not mean much to them.
Even if it is deliberate, it’s hard to prove it unless it’s the same couple of guys doing it regularly. After all, the whole game is based on spamming your attack skills until the evil red thing is dead.
There are always going to be some trolls but with the Octo I think it may be that many of the experienced regular players are busy with the Halloween event. It’s certainly been harder to get a decent multiloot in recent weeks and I seem to see a lot more dead players in those events currently.
Happening in EU too, apart from one accidental (and it clearly was, was like very last sec of burn phase that it went past tresshold of 0), it never happened until last week, it happened 5x on east. We still made the kills 4/5 situation but lost critical time (and panic xd).
But all i can conclude (after so much months of perfect EAST situations, that it can be only a troll who does this).
No excuse anymore for not giving ‘hide mounts’-option
No thanks to unidentified weapons.

Part of the problem is the veterans never explain the strategy in any type of content where it’s required (Tarir, VW, dungeons, fractals, etc), but call people noobs or trolls or kick them from the party when they don’t know it, actually wasting more time than what briefly explaining the mechanics would have taken.
As for reporting them if they’re really doing it on purpose… I’m wondering… Is role-playing a corrupted Sylvari trying to work for Mordry in world events against the tos (honest question).

I agree that many players who are experienced with certain content are extremely impatient with new players and conveniently forget that at one point they needed mechanics explained to them as well.
As to your question. Roleplaying is one thing, griefing other players deliberately is quite another entirely. Roleplay is fine until it starts to deliberately have a negative impact on other’s experience in the game. But it really is up to Anet on whether deliberately making a meta event fail as a part of roleplay is griefing other players or not.
It’s just speculation on my part. Maybe some players are purposely causing fails to deal with the the perceived multi loot exploit that Anet hasn’t dealt with in a satisfactory manner one way or another.
Try lead DS with troll comms or boss aggroers. Tower time: tags everywhere and boss aggroed near the gate lol

I’ve thought it might be people against multi-loot trying to drive the ecto prices up during the game holiday. The only way to counter a couple of players burning a direction is to keep the easy burn directions up high enough that it requires more than a few players to kill the vine. East is always quick to burn down low so they can help south. Somewhat with North (helping west) also. West and south burning early is probably just overzealous players caught up in the fight. Players from north helping west tend to cut north short at times leaving just players not paying attention.
This morning we almost lost a map because players on north weren’t paying attention. A few of us managed to get the gate burned in the last few seconds while others were camping in safe spots.

You might be right in certain peoples’ cases. However, the multi-loot exploit maybe has not been dealt with by Anet because they don’t see it as a problem. Maybe they feel that it is already satisfactorily dealt with.
I don’t think any general player has been chosen to be exploit police. If they do not like something there is always the reporting/support route.
Until it is fixed (or not), trolling for any reason is unacceptable.

That’s an unfortunately plausible theory. We’ve certainly seen people troll LFGs selling dungeon paths; this would be similar.
Regardless, if you think it’s happening, document as best you’re able and send in a support ticket. This will allow ANet to figure out If a particular group is making a habit of it.
However, the multi-loot exploit maybe has not been dealt with by Anet because they don’t see it as a problem.
My point was that Anet hasn’t addressed it. By that I mean they need to address it by publicly saying yes/no/ we are working on/there is no easy fix because it too complicated for the team etc. Anyway their silence is the bigger issue and no one player can say with any certainty the Anet doesn’t see it as a problem and your definitive explanation is only pure speculation as was mine.

Of course it was pure speculation. Did I say otherwise?
If they are staying silent on the issue on purpose, I totally understand and respect that.
Especially on these public forums, things heat up rather quickly and get ugly. I can see a Catch 22 for Anet on this. There are many people who hate the multi loot situation. Obviously there are many that love it. Addressing it one way or another until they are prepared to deal with it, however they are prepared to deal with it, could just mean headache for them.
They have constantly said about content: “It’s ready when it’s ready.” I would guess that they feel the same about issues: “We will address them when we address them.”
The “staying silent” tactic is NOT a speculation on my part. It is a business strategy in many different industries. “Say nothing until you are ready.” We have employed it within my company as well.

They are addressing it; you just don’t happen to agree with how they’ve chosen to do it. As Jheryn says, they’ve adopted a long-standing business policy of saying nothing until they have something definitive to say and that’s intended to make things better.
I can agree that their plans don’t always bear the intended fruit. However, I don’t agree that they are required to change their plans just because some of us think they should.
