Okay, so I have to admit I’m getting a little burned out on WoW. The no real new content since SoO launched and having to wait until Fall/Winter 2014 for WoD is finally getting to me. While I’m not going to quit in the near future – my guild is trying to do “Ahead of the Curve: Siege of Orgimmar” and we’re on Garrosh, so bailing on them now would be a Grade-A kitten move which I’m not going to do; especially since I’m their Tank and those are hella hard to replace.

But I’ve been looking at other MMOs to play, and GW2 was, frankly, at the top of that list. I played the hell out of GW1 – in fact I played it INSTEAD of WoW. I loved my Ele/Me and played the hell out of it; though I was never able to finish the original campaign because I was too late to the party and wasn’t good enough to solo it.

But for some reason something about GW2 isn’t grabbing me; I think it might be me and not the game. Last time I played was during the Queen’s Revel event; it was okay but I felt maybe I was missing out a bit because there was no one around and I was such a low level.

Maybe its because I made a Mesmer; but I was worried about trying another class since I already redeemed my Legacy Stuff, and I remember that post about how they weren’t saving names and the reserve stuff from playing GW1 anymore.

I just felt kind of disconnected from everything too. And the community seemed more like just people who were there, rather than interacting or doing anything.

The end-game seems a little unclear too; from what I’ve seen in the trailers and releases, it looks mostly like Zerging World Bosses, rather than anything structured.

I really WANT to like Gw2 because of how good GW1 was to me, but I’m just having trouble finding it right now. Am I missing something?

FWIW the Legacy items can be obtained at the Hall of Monuments as many times as you want.

GW2 is a casual MMO. It might not be what you’re looking for just yet, but someday it potentially will. You’ll never be needed in GW2 the same way you are in WOW, and when that sounds like a good thing, give it a try.

1. Try games closer to WoW. Maybe those will hit home? I found Wildstar to be very interesting and pre-purchased it, because it mixes what I love from GW2 (such as action combat, no real trinity, etc) with WoW things (20 to 40 man raids, fun battlegrounds, traditional questing system)
2. Now as for GW2, try different classes and perhaps change the server to a more populated one? If the server is in gold or silver league in WvW it’s likely to be full of people. This being a casual MMO it’s pretty much no gear grind. For your end game you can do dungeons, fractals, WvW, PvP, world bosses and then there’s living story updates that on the first season were quite frequent (every 2 weeks). At the moment we’re on a break from the Living Story. The next update is on April 15th, which will change a lot of things (mostly concerned with quality of life, some connected to leveling) and we’re promised a grand announcement on the same day (likely to do with the next living story season). But unlike WoW this is a less stressful MMO. You won’t fall behind. You turn it on, play with your friends, maybe move more towards your long term goal and then turn it off. I personally like it this way. When I have a lot of time I can play more than one game at the same time. When I have little time, this is god sent.

So I finally got GW2 working again (some weird start-up crash) but I was wondering; what would be a decent High Pop. server for the Americas? Preferably one that is close to EST timezone to keep time sort of accurate? (Rather not have it be night time when I’m playing during my day off for instance)

Tarnished Coast. However with the new Mega-server gig it isn’t as important.

I just realized you brought up a old thread. In PvE it does not matter as much anymore due to the MegaServer. Instead of Servers having maps Servers are part of a criteria to place you into a shard(instance) of a map that is used region wide. This system was put in place so people like you can still enjoy the game in less populated maps.

The rest of my comment on your old post.

This is where Guild Wars 2 differs greatly from WoW. With Wow you have raiding. Guild Wars 2 is what you make of it be it sPvP,WvW, Achievement hunting, Going for ascended, Going for a legendary, Fractals, Dungon running, starting another character, Map completion. To have a good endgame experance in Guild Wars 2 PvE you need to make some goals for your character and work towards them.

Also your hall of monument items can be obtained as many times as you wish for no extra cost. The wardrobe actually makes this easier now.

Guild Wars 2 has very little in common with it’s predecessor, so if you’re looking for familiar ground you won’t find it in this game. That’s a sensitive topic for many GW1 fans and we’ve discussed it at length already so I’ll leave that one be. I’m sure people will mull it over again in this very thread without my help.

I can only suggest that you approach GW2 like it’s an all new franchise with a fresh set of concepts and game play mechanics. If that still doesn’t work for you, maybe the game is not for you.

The first thing you need to do is ‘let go.’ GW2 is not GW1. It is also not WoW. It’s a very different animal and needs to be approached as such.

The second thing you should try is simply exploring the classes. The gw1 ele and the gw2 ele = drastically different. Gw1 mes vs gw2 mes are so totally not the same critter that it’s baffling. You have to ‘find yourself’ again and approach each class with an open mind. Then again, if you like melee and just want to face roll, I’ve told warrior is the way to go… shrug

Finally, if you’ve honestly given everything a chance and cleared your mind of ‘pre-existing mmo expectations and bias’ and it’s still not clicking for you, then it simply might not be your thing. Always a possibility.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

Zerging world bosses is one thing you can do at end-game, but does not work on the actual hard bosses that they revamped (Tequatl/TripleTroubleWurm). People fail that constantly because they think they can just zerg it and not actually coordinate and plan ahead of time.

Moving from WoW to GW2 will be a drastic change in end-game. In GW2 you pretty much have to be able to make your own fun. WvW is popular because it can be different each time you go, but also it’s kinda the same each time you go, just one of those things. PvP I personally find extremely enjoyable, but others also find it repetitive because there is currently only one game type.

Doing 5man dungeons is popular as well, but typically it is for money grinding once you get the skins you want from them.

If you are used to raiding and that is what you legitimately enjoy for end-game, then you will be disappointed with GW2, that’s all I can really say. I was a huge raiding fan in my WoW days but simply got burned out.

Some people on GW2 forums whine a lot about things changing recently (rebalancing stats and such)and now they have to replace gear, wasted time and money etc., when they don’t realize that’s what you had to do every quarter pretty much playing WoW. Oh hey, finally finished my sweet armor set after several months? Surprise it’s obsolete come this patch!

GW2 is great if you are casual. If you like the hard-core aspect and spending a majority of your day playing, then personally I feel you would get bored relatively quickly.

I won’t stop because I can’t stop.

It’s a medical condition, they say its terminal….
