It would be great if we could turn off ground targeting. Making it baseline saved us wasting a trait and all but, it’s not always warranted. In fact, sometimes it’s even a hindrance to have ground targeting. So how about in the options panel to have an “off” setting? So once again we can have it insta-cast at our feet.

I’d rather just get the option to change my cursor color without having to use 3rd party programs

I honestly like ground targetting in that you have to do a bit more. I’m a fan of having to be more active in play. I understand the hindrance, I’ve thrown my WoR in the wrong spot on my guard a couple times and facpalmed, but I do support the change. I just hate when I lose my cursor in all the haze.

In options, I select Instant for ground targeting. Works for me for casting at my feet.

I wish there would be an option to automatically take your target as the center
of the ground target. We have tha mouse cursor option, but that doesn’t work
very well if you often use the mouse to click on your skillbar.

Hovering anywhere over the UI will cast the AoE at your feet.
Just set for intant casting in settings.

Never click a skill to cast it, it’s a lazy and slow way of playing.

I do love how they made ground targetting baseline, using a trait to do this before was a waste.

Honestly, I hate ground targeting, in general.

I think all ground targeting AOEs should be changed to NPC/player targeted AOEs.

No thank you. I rather enjoy a well placed AoE that hits a maximum of targets.

IMO is better keep the normal cast as it is, but I would love the option to cast AOE skills at target location with some key combination (Ctrl/Alt + hab)

I would love to have an option to not have to ground target my wells. I never took the trait before the change because I prefer to just press a button and have it cast on me. I cast them slower now because I have to make sure my mouse is in a proper spot.

I wouldn’t mind even seeing two versions of each skill where one is ground target and the other is target on the caster.

You know what I’d like to see?

A simple toggle on each of these skills, preferably individually.
Why? Because sometimes I want it at my feet right now right now right now. (healing or condi removal AoE)
Other times I want to drop it carefully, like a well placed stab.
(Offensive AoE)

So if instead of having to turn it on or off entirely I’d prefer if in the lower right corner of each skill take the little red circle symbol and turn that into the toggle.
Red for ground targeted green for non.
Maybe have it non swappable in combat to prevent accidental changes (or leave it swappable in combat for greater flexibility!)

Well, some weapons (on some classes, at least) don’t have a ground targeted AOE, anyway.

So, I don’t really see what the problem would be?

Hmm, Necro casting AoEs with staff and Wells having direct 100% chance to hit/activate marks? No. Thank. You.

Engineer Grenades to track the enemy next?
This is a game mechanic, designed to make people think about positioning, when you remove that, there’s no counterplay. Having the game play for you (ground target on the target enemy by default) removes the playstyle of the profession.

I also think you’re confusing a ‘blast’ type skill, for AoE. Which stand for Area of Effect. A player is a player, not an area.
Honestly, this is only an issue with skillclickers imo.

I know what AOE means and I’m not a skill clicker, personally (not that I’m criticising those who are).

OK, just to clarify, I would generally prefer a player/NPC targeted multi-target type skill, than a ground targeted one.

Obviously, they would probably need to adjust things for balance, but I see no reason why it couldn’t be done.

I can cope with ground targeting (I did it on my mage in WoW), but I just prefer not to have to do it.

In WoW, for example, on my hunter, I only had to ground target for traps and flares.

The multi-target skill was NPC/player targeted.

I preferred that – it felt more natural.

Also, I think, as more and more people abandon their PCs and mice and play on laptops and even on tablets (I heard, recently), I feel ground targeting is becoming a more and more outmoded concept.

Oh and re. positioning:

On Ranger, you’re already constantly obstructed, by every almost imperceptible rise in ground level and blade of grass.

So it doesn’t feel necessary, to me, to further hamper the player via having to also worry about the positioning of a mage-like AOE.

This question was raised mainly due to Wall of Reflection, but extends to all Wall skill by virtue of how they are used.

Strategically, Walls create a Cone of interference depending on where they are placed, and what direction its blocking fire. For incoming fire from multiple directions, its best to place them near the area being defended. To prevent outgoing fire, you place it near the source.

This is where the discussion becomes critical. Reflection skills are usually cast in a way that maximizes the amount of incoming fire it can reflect. For multiple projectile sources that means you want it close to the protected targets as possible. Same when you want to defend a small group.

The only time you place these types of blocks near the source is if it has a wide area attack or cone attack (TT, Lupi, MD, etc), in order to protect the maximum amount of effective area given the limited size of the wall.

When you look at how each class intends to operate, ground targeting can either be useful or a massive hindrance. Since guardians tend to be in close, and usually the center of combat, most of their situations benefit from consecration fields being cast right on top of them. With Wall of Reflection in particular, where position and facing are critical to how it works, manually aiming the skill only increases the chance of a mistake. given how chaotic melee fights are. This is entirely due to relative travel for the radial positioning of the skill targeting when up close.

Ground targeting is more useful, and more commonly seen on mid-line or back line classes which have distance to help keep the wall oriented correctly. But when up close, the difference of a few units of mouse travel can be the difference between the wall facing forward… or behind you… or on the side. That mistake can render the wall useless.

If you want enemy or self target aoe, put your mouse there and then press the button for the skill.
