Maybe you somehow destroyed a Chaos Shard? I think that was one of the effects. It makes sense in the way that, the reactor is overflowing with chaotic energy. Lorewise almost anything can happen there.

The grey orbs that come off the chaotic materials from the fire elemental pre will do that if you get hit by one. Same with interacting with a chaos shard as dual mentioned.
