Linux client is a waste of time. Until linux users rally around a single distro then it will always be a “side project” for developers.
not many games have a native linux client. To niche, thus to expensive to develop. Those that “want” the game will have winblows or a Mac.
I don’t think you can consider nothing porting something to a system/OS nor to a specific language as an epic failure. It might be a failure to acknowledge a potential market, but it’s not an epic one.
Epic failures are typically restricted to things a company has actually attempted, but which have resulted in monumental or disastrous losses.
By these standards, my personal epic failures include:
1. Not speaking fluent Latin (just reading)
2. Only dating B list actresses and aging supermodels.
A Russian localization would be great, I agree on that.
Regarding linux I would recommend to improve the Mac Client first, which still is utterly flawed.

No. It would be bad.
But cyrillic fonts would be good. Not only for Russian people.
I remember runescape’s epic failed with the introduction of their new combat system a couple of years ago. They went from having around 120-150k players online daily to 40-60k. I even left the game :P
Maybe if Russia pulled out of Ukraine, Anet might think about a Russian localization

I agree that a Linux version for GW 2 is a waste of time, cause as far as I know, there aren’t a lot of people who use Linux who also plays GW2.
That said, what you’re saying is wrong. If a game is made for Linux it will run on any distro. The only game bugs I’ve come across are related to wrong handling of the code from the developers of the ports for Linux.

This is true for the most part, but for really popular games the cost for making a Linux port or native is worth it. I should also mention that developing Linux ports isn’t as hard as people say. There are plenty of small companies that do really smooth Linux ports.
If you already have a Mac OS X version for a game that either uses OpenGL or a compatibility layer (like WINE) or a wrapper translating DirectX to OpenGL, then it isn’t very complicated to make a version for Linux.

A Russian (presumably) is complaining that an American company didn’t make a Russian translation of an American game? If the Russian language was relevant, they would have made it. Until Russian becomes relevant, you’re free to start your own gaming company and refuse to make English translations out of spite.
Even if successful it will be an epic fail. I agree. Utilize resources to give the Windows users (you know the overwhelming majority) and current languages customers new instanced content.

Same as like there will most likely never be any localizations for many many other languages for GW2, like Italian, Dutch, Swedish, Norwegian, Finish, Danish, Portuguese, Turkish ect. pp
ANet makes only localizations for gamer markets, that are big enough and were already big enough back in GW1 times, thats the reason why we have only English, German, French and Spanish, because these 4 languages covered by far the most biggest community part of active wealthy players that owned also all of GW1, what is the target group of ANet in the end.. wealthy high active players – simply said, people which will most likely spend alot of money in the gemstore and will buy all kinds of upcoming products of the game like HoT, so that it makes financially sense for anet to cover these languages of their most biggest community language shares for their localization works, ionstead of making too many localizations for tons of other countries, when in fact these peopel that come of these countries are compared to En/Ge/Sp/Fr just a super minor part of high active welthy players…
Would have been russion players back in 2005+ onwards to the point of GW2’s announcement a much much bigger high active gamer community in GW2 the world would surely look different now and Russian would surely be a language among the current 4 to be under the localizastion standards, but thats simply not the case, because russion as localization isn’t simply for Anet a target group, because unlike the english, or especially the German community of guildwars, the russions weren#t active enough, not big enough representated in the game as a whole.
The ressources time and effort that Anet would totally waste for russion localizations ect. would be simply better spend and used for new game content for everyone.
If you want so much a localization in Russian for GW2, then it’s best that the russian community sits together and searches for a PUBLISHER, so that ANet can and maybe will release an own russian localized game client then with own russian servers the way they did it for China….

And its doubtful, that anet would waste ressources for the localization works, I see this ever happening only, when it gets doen in the same way, they made it for China, where a different publisher is ressponsible for the Game Client and Localization Works, which is in regard of Chinas’s case this local company KongZhong , which does there all the localization and publishing works for ANet.
Tips fedora I use Linux Mint based on Ubuntu and wouldn’t mint a native port, but it’d still cost manpower and even though I guess their OSX client has been in beta forever, it works good enough. The niche for Linux based GW2 players is so tiny it probably wouldn’t be worth the manpower or headaches of other distro users or such complaining something isn’t working. Wine works with GW2 but I’ve not gotten it to work, mostly since last I tried the client downloading the game would crash (would probably want to get that to work first)
