A simple confirmation box would suffice if you feel there is any need for such. If people are otherwise carelessly throwing out or destroying items from inventory, it’s their own fault. The rest of us should not be inconvenienced in this way.

Particularly egregious is the Hall of Monuments Portal Stone, which:

  • is automatically added to every new character’s inventory
  • is currently disabled in its function with no fix on the horizon
  • can be freely replaced at the player’s convenience, making deletion a non-issue in any case
  • should not be an item in the first place. It’s not like the story is taking us anywhere interesting, like the Far Shiverpeaks, anytime soon. I had hoped the LA revamp would have finally added a permanent portal fixture for the HoM.

You know that’s an argument that won’t actually go over very well when someone accidentally deletes something important right? It’s a small inconvenience and it prevents a lot of future complaining.

You only have to type it once to delete it. I’m not really seeing a problem here, unless you have hundreds of them.

And no, it’s not always people’s own fault. Sometimes lag makes a mouse jump and you end up destroying something you’d other than you’d meant to keep. For certain items, items not easily replaced, that can be a pretty bad thing. If you’re using the menu it’s even worse. I’ve had lag make me select the wrong menu item. Again a requester is so common many people do click on them without looking.

That’s exactly the point. I want these people to see and understand that their negligence is costing everyone else their time. You deleted the wrong item, it’s your fault. You wasted my time, it’s your fault. If you continue asking for this feature, then you must be made to acknowledge how selfish a request it is.

It’s a small inconvenience and it prevents a lot of future complaining.

Consider that I went to the trouble of making this post rather than continue with this “small” inconvenience. That means it’s more of an inconvenience than simply remaining quiet about it. This function does not serve me in any way, it is an inconvenience being forced on me to benefit the careless. It is catering to the lowest common denominator. If I wanted to be pretentious, I’d go so far as to say it is what is wrong with society today.

Please do note that I did not suggest the removal of safety net completely. This is perfectly acceptable as a compromise:
“Are you sure you want to delete [item name]? YES / NO”
If you cannot be bothered to read this message and click the correct response, you don’t deserve any more of my time to save you from your mistake.

Lag doesn’t cause mouse jumps. Mouse handling is entirely client side. Whether the issue is your mouse or your system performance, the issue is your hardware. If frame drops are unavoidable due to what’s happening around you, exercise better judgment about when to manage your inventory. Use YOUR time to avoid YOUR problems, don’t use MY time to avoid YOUR problems.

You are not representative of the world. You might not even be representative of the human norm (I don’t really know you that well). An argument from anecdote cannot necessarily be generalised because individual experience is after all individual. It’s a component of the ‘theory of mind’ to be able to separate ones experiences from another person experiences. Overall this can lead to an interesting discussion of epistemology, but still that’s a rather large tangent.

If you have THAT many portal stones to delete, then I’d be more worried about how quickly you’re recycling alts, and whether that slot being taken up is really worth the “effort” you’re so arduously putting forth.

Why are you so worried about that portal stone? All you have to do is leave it there in the inventory. The key run gets you bags, which stack, and a few pieces of armor. The 20 slot bag you get and the 5 slot level reward bag holds all that with room to spare. And then you delete the char and its portal stone together at the end.

Be careful what you ask for
ANet may give it to you.

Could you elaborate on what you’re deleting so much of that’s consistently inconveniencing you with name confirmations? I honestly can’t think of anything I would get in regular play that does this beyond the aforementioned Portal Stones (only when I’m keyfarming, but I don’t even bother deleting those) and WvW Experience boosters (the one with the slightly larger inventory icon and comes with… achievement chests, I believe?).

If your list only consists of items that are easily replaceable or consumable, then the only reasonable solution would be to have those items removed from the confirmation list rather than disable an entire safeguard that hardly anyone complains about.

I’m going to have to disagree for a rather simple, albeit personal reason. I get twitches in my hand and my wrist sometimes while playing which make me miss-click all over the place and it has made me delete important things in the past. It also makes me misplace AoEs and things. So what I would suggest, since I know the typing can get frustrating, is have the typing as an accessibility option for people who need/want it.

I’m finding it ironic that you call having to type to delete your items for safety reasons ‘obnoxious’ yet your writing in this entire thread with a rather abrupt and obnoxious attitude.

If you want to write a post about an issue, and have some level of a constructive discussion about it, it is always best to write it when you have had some time away from the issue that’s causing you so much anger, rather than being annoyed by the said issue and coming to the forums right away. You are then not clouded by what is frustrating you, and your point of view will look a little less enflamed.

This thread is a fail when you come stomping high demanding stuff and calling others selfish because lack of different vision from you. Next time try to add a positive criticism and ways to improve the quality of life as BeckaPL did with their post.

Hmmm….I was sipping my morning coffee before work when I came across this thread.

I am fascinated by those who come into the forums and act like he/she is the sun and everyone else revolves around him/her…if someone behaved like this in real life that behavior would award them a kitten-whooping in one form or another.

So, I started to think what would possess OP to come into the forums with a me, me, me, and me only attitude.

(1) Not sure what time zone he/she is in but he/she might have spent the evening sinning in a beer hall, came home and for some unknown reason, started to delete a crazy amount of stuffs, got frustrated because his/her coordination was subpar, and because his/her judgement was not the best as well, came onto the forums to lash out.

(2) He/She is new at his/her job and is sick of being the low man/woman on the totem pole and came here to feel better about him/her self.

(3) The OP is a college student conducting a psychology experiment on us for a class to see how we react to such a post.

(4)The OP forgot to take his/her morning/evening meds.

(5) The OP is trolling us for grins, because he/she is bored.

(6) The OP may be a grouchy person on par with Oscar The Grouch.

I dunno.

You misunderstand the point of the feature entirely.

Do you have any idea how many “I accidentally deleted X item and need it back” requests MMO companies get?

Tons. Thousands.
And even with a policy of “—— you it’s your own fault” they still have to field all those requests, reply to every one of then turning them down.

This feature basically gives them an easy out on the majority of those requests.
If you know that most of the really important items are protected by this any request “I deleted X accidentally by typing its full name into a text field asking if I wanted to destroy it” can be dismissed out of hand.

The benefit for some players is entirely a side benefit.

While I agree that any easily re-obtained item shouldn’t be included (such as the HoM portal stone) it’s not a feature they’re going to be willing to give up.

As for functionality wise, people don’t read pop up messages, especially if they think they know what they’re doing. If they know they just tried to delete the right item they wont read the pop-up asking if they’re sure.
I’ve seen people bring down servers, delete websites, delete ultra rare items in games, delete high end characters.
All because they “knew what they were doing” so they didn’t pay attention to warning messages.

While I’m generally on the side of people need to learn, even if its the hard way, to pay attention and employ just a tiny amount of critical thinking to what they’re doing.
And you could call me a proponent of the School of Hard Knocks, and an Adherent of the Burned Hand.
But this is a game.

Now, all that said, I’m not against letting people hang themselves, so if you want to suggest they add some toggles for this kind of thing (I mean sure I’d kind of like to be able to salvage rares without a prompt every time, but its saved me from salvaging plenty I didn’t want to when I was in a hurry to clear inventory space on a boss train).

Options? All for it.

The minor inconvenience of having to type “Hall of Monuments Portal Stone” when deleting the item really isn’t worth the trouble of not having the type confirm in the game. It prevents any deletion accidents and that’s a good thing.

The inconvenience may be enough to you, to warrant posting this, but remember, just because YOU feel this way, not everyone will agree with you.

There could be a couple of ways to make this simpler however.
Rather than having to type "hall of.. "etc.. why not also have a short code for this item? So instead of having to type "hall of.. "etc it would also accept “a1d5e”

Or maybe the option to disable it in your options. To avoid people disabling it and regretting it later, it could be an ironically long phrase that you have to type in:
“I want to disable the feature which requires you to type in the name of the item you want to delete and I give up my right to complain when I mess up at some future date”

You know the best part of this. This isn’t going to be changed. Because it costs customer service time and energy to go through service tickets for accidentally deleted important items. And since it won’t be changed, your opinion of it is pretty much completely irrelevant.

However, you should probably avoid calling other people selfish, because that’s sort of judgemental, don’t you think?

I’m glad to type a bit of text to save people from inconvenience. But as far as wasting time…since this isn’t likely to be changed, I’d say the entire thread falls in that category.

Actually I can see the point with the Portal Stone since replacements are freely available from the Skritt in the Bandit’s den due to old alts not receiving them after people upgraded to the Deluxe edition. And since the HoM skins are put into the wardrobe, free to apply and the Stones themselves are accountbound; I don’t think they, specifically, need to be protected anymore.

All other items of particular value should remain type-to-delete for the very reasons stated above: to prevent calims of accidental deletion. It’s a great failsafe for both Arenanet and players.

Honestly I agree with the OP that it is annoying but at the same time the only things that really get annoying with this system are the portal stones and a few common items from BLC. The portal stones don’t really come up enough for it to be an inconvenience. And the minis or whatever else they decide to add to BLC that month only affect a few of us in game. While it is an inconvenience it does not affect gameplay and does not affect even close to a majority of players. With that in mind there really is no need for them to change it.

What I would rather them do is give a small price tag on all those stupid horrible minis that we get out of the BLC so I can merchant them for 2c each instead of typing in “6 Miniature Ravens” every time I open BLCs. Or even better yet allow us to trade them in the TP!

You are completely and totally wrong about this great feature of the game. I have played for years and I can barely remember even having to use this feature to delete something so I would like to know what you have to delete so many of?

On the other hand, clicking the wrong thing because your inventory fills up in the middle of some crazy battle and throwing a Legendary away by accident would cause such rage and frustration that having to type something to confirm a delete is ZERO problem. In fact I bet many people are thrilled when it comes up knowing it just saved them a ton of pain.

Like, I can account bind my legendary, etc, but if they got in they could still destroy it. I’ve seen it, they get in, take everything valuable, and then destroy everything they can’t take for profit.

This feature is in here because no one reads popup messages. It’s true in other programs and even windows and it’s true in game. Something pops up and the user just clicks through as fast as they can because it’s in the way.

This message is deliberately obnoxious to prevent the user from blasting through what could be a terrible mistake. If it just was a confirmation message you’d see players asking anet to restore their legendaries cause they deleted the wrong item. It was a simple text confirm like “yes i want to delete this thing” the user would just type that as fast as possible to get the message out of the way. Queue the deluge of messages to restore legendary items that users accidentally delete just to get a message out of the way.

This is also why when you kick someone from the party that it appears in the party window instead of as a popup. This makes the end user actually take part in their action rather than just get it out of the way. This way a single person cannot truly control who is in a party.

I left world of warcraft because of the community there. One person could trigger a kick from a dungeon and because it was a popup the other users would just click yes to get rid of the message. Control through apathy.

Take delight OP in the fact that ANET makes deleting important items obnoxious so that you can’t accidentally delete your legendary weapon because you wanted to get a confirmation window out of the way. They marked any item that you buy with gems and important equipment this way. Just type the name of the item in if you truly want it gone.
