So Guild Wars 1 had two expansions, Factions and Nightfall. Now I don’t know about you, but I’d love to see some expansions in Guild War 2’s future.
I don’t necessarily mean a whole new box you have to go and buy, but just the idea of a large content update with new classes, areas, and, potentially, races now that that’s in the mix, too.
This is a no-brainer for most other MMOs, and seems like a no-brainer here, too. However, I’m beginning to see this as being more and more difficult to picture.

Let me break this up into a number of different sections to explain a bit better, and more of why it doesn’t seem like it will work.

More areas:
This will involve reworking lore quite a bit, and also shake Tyria. As far as we know, what we see of Tyria is what we get, and it’s already a bit big, not just in size, but in depth as well. Just go to the graveyard in Divinity’s Reach sometime – you’ll see what I mean. This is more probable than some other things I’ll cover, but I still fail to see it working. Unless we start reaching other planes of existence (D&D), or traveling to other planets (WoW). With as original, for the most part, as GW2 has proven to be so far, it’d have to be something mindblowing.

More classes:
I see this impossible to be brought into the game. Why? All aspects of play are already covered.
Like pets? Ranger.
Like summoning things? Necromancer/Mesmer.
Like playing mindgames? Mesmer/Thief.
Like hitting things? Warrior.
Like the magics? Elementalist.
Like building things? Engineer.
Like healing/tanking? Guardian.

More in-depth interests are also covered by races or classes, such as transformation (Engineer, Norn), blood (necromancer), chaos (mesmer), countering (mesmer, warrior), controlling (all), having bunches of weapons (warrior, engineer) and mimicking enemy abilities (mesmer, thief).

Very few playstyles, if any, can be added.

Now, some may say we could simply bring in past classes. This is not really applicable. Although the Monk is teased at in Ascolonian Catacombs (my apologies if that is spelled wrong), the Guardian acts as a Monk, and, in some respect, the Dervish.
Warrior takes over Paragon.
There’s already Necro and Mesmer, so no real need for the Ritualist
And Assassin and Thief are pretty much the same thing.

Weapons:
This is where the real rub would be in expansions, as it’s the backing for offensive abilities.
…What will be added? There’s not much weapons not already being covered in one form or another. The only one that I can think of is some kind of land polearm.

Personal Story:
Although I could see personal story expansions, I’m already a bit upset by those since it stops being personal somewhere around level 30. I mean, heck, I haven’t even seen Petra since level 10.

Overall question: What is there to add? The world is already filled, there’s no need for new classes and nothing to really add that isn’t covered, and not much choice for weapon expansion. Where does the game go from here? I’d really hate to see everyone level cap and drop it like yesterday, with sPvP being the only sticking factor.

Oh boy do I have a map for you.

See those three colored sections? See the one at the top? That’s the entire world map we currently see.

Er. I mean two colored sections.

Also, even on the map we currently have, there are entire zones we don’t have access to.

We can travel to maybe 50% of what we can already see. Maybe even less.

As for classes, they can always add more of them. Just because one class can do something doesn’t mean you can’t have other classes that do it as well.

As far as weapon goes, I’m sure there’s things that can be added.
Some weapons that are missing off the top of my head: Greataxes, Javelin/Spear, Scythes (yay for dervishes!)

They could also give classes an already existing weapon, such as giving Rangers hammer (All hail the thumpers!), warriors shortbow and thieves longbows.

Don’t worry, there’s tons of things that could be potential extra content in future expansions

I’m confused as to how you could possibly say that more areas are unlikely and that the world is already filled.

There are 3 major areas from the first Guild Wars that are not accessible in GW2. Coincidentally enough, two of those currently-inaccessible areas – the Crystal Desert and the northern Shiverpeaks – are confirmed over and over by the game to be the residences of elder dragons Kralkatorrik and Jormag, respectively.

There’s also the Ring of Fire islands, which in all likelihood is where Primordus (the fire dragon) will end up.

And just looking at the GW2 map you can see other areas that are named but inaccessible. Most notable is the Isle of Janthir, which has very strong lore ties to the Mursaat, a powerful GW1 enemy. And of course some of you human players will know that the White Mantle have already made their reappearance (if you choose “never knew your parents” at human character creation), so it seems pretty likely we haven’t heard the last of the Unseen Ones.

And of course, all of that is without even mentioning the entire 2 continents which existed in GW1 that are currently inaccessible but have had significant lore developments.

I find it likely that there will be 3 major paid expansions, each adding an elder dragon to fight and the area around that dragon. There’s a chance that the Mursaat will show up, but I think that’s less likely to be a huge paid update. And then we might get two (or more) major expansions after we’re done with the dragons to revisit Cantha and Elona.

As for extra classes, we’re pretty unlikely to see anything from GW1 that didn’t make the cut.

Monk, Ritualist, and Paragon have all been folded into Guardian, with the Warrior also picking up some of the Paragon’s team buffs.

Thief is pretty much exactly the Assassin, except it’s missing the martial arts flavour.

Dervish would be cool, but since the entire class concept is based on the human gods, it would require either a serious lore reworking, or massive flavour differences per race.

It seems that an extra race – tengu – is probably a given. Their walled-off area is adjacent to they sylvari starter zone and also a 15-25 zone, so it’s a perfect spot for another 1-15 area. Furthermore I hear they were being worked on as a playable race but they decided not to ship because they had too much animation trouble or something. I don’t have a source, it’s something I heard on Reddit or somewhere.

The OP doesn´t make much sense, i write this with respect for the OP and in a non “act like a kitten” way.

There´s so much hinted in the game about future expansions, story wise you have the remaining dragons to contend with, with the vast majority of the lore game world still to explore.

Class wise, look at other games like WoW or EQ, they had mostly all their bases covered at launch in terms of class roles and they still manage to launch new classes. In GW2 you could see shapeshifting classes, bare hands melee classes and many more… even variations of existing roles but with diferent “flavors”.

With the upcoming update at the end of this month i think we will be in for a surprise or 2 in terms of what Arenanet is able to acomplish with this game.

What will likely happen—and here I have to insert some text because otherwise it censors the preceding and following words when placed together—is that we’ll see additional level 80 zones using the existing map, and at some point down the line there will be an expansion that expands the current map to include, probably most immediately and obviously, places like Elona.

Remember, GW1 used the level 1-19 areas as glorified tutorials for Factions and Nightfall. Most of the game was designed to be played at the level cap. I’m expecting a lot of new zones to be added to the existing map before we see need for a full-scale paid expansion.

As for extra weapons, I’d really like to see a Spear (lance/javelin) that you can use on land. Javelin and Shield combo would be a great look.

Other weapons I can think of.
Halberd, pick axe, flail, whip, crossbow, fan, mirror, wand, throwing knifes, brass knuckles.
Heck even a rapier (as a two handed weapon) would be cool. Free off hand.

I’d just like to point out that the Ritulist got turned into the Engineer (Spirits = turrets and Weapon spells becoming kits), one of the many things I was disappointed to see in GW2.

You don’t think more classes can be brought into the game? I am sorry but you have very little imagination and creativity. This is not trying to insult you, but there are so many possibilities for new classes. Many ideas can originate from unusual combinations of the aspects of play you mentioned. The imagination is the limit here.

As for the world… GW2 has a lot of lore. Expansions ideas are usually based on the lore of the world. This game has a lot to cover still. Since this game is based on dragons, it is safe to assume that we can have one expansion per Elder Dragon. I think there are 5 dragons, but Im not entirely sure!

Personally I would like expansion to not be based on a dragon at a time, since it is so predictable. Still that is a lot of material to cover.

Please don’t take this as an attack on you.

I would personally like to see new professions be a bit more evil. Right now we have only necromancer and thief who are on the evil or rather less good side. How about adding
-pirate
-vampire
-some evil melee fighter, maybe call him executioner or jailor and give him great axe, whip and a crossbow as a new weapon combo.

Also adding a new less good order would make an interesting curve in the lore. There are many examples in the real history: Inquisition, Knight Templars and so on.

Also I would like to have an option to join evil orders in the game, like sons of Svanir and similar and fight on the evil side. Why not giving an option? That would open a huge world of different possibilities to the players, giving different lore, spels, skills, armor and so on.

Guild wars should be war between orders, because orders are guilds too.

/me reminds everyone of Utopia.

I am hoping to see the Chronomancer make a show, I can imagine some pretty cool things with that, such as things that affect enemy movement speed, recharges, cast time etc. They already had had the class’s concept ready, along with the whole area that utopia would take place in, so this is easily an area that they will expand into.

@eonZgamer:

No, you are wrong in this, there are Sons of Svanir in Hoelbrak and nobody is giving them finger. They are just not popular with the rest of Norns. Major cities wouldn’t be needed, a fort would suffice, and they already populate several campsites all over the Norn zones.

hhmmm…thief- stealing, necro – reviving the corpses? sounds evil enough to me. I have no problem of being evil thou. I loved playing a marauder and a chosen in WAR. I would like to have the same option here in GW2. Or at least to be able to join evil fractions too, and not only the good ones. Throws some spice into the game.

Any class can be played Evil, that’s all about roleplayin’. My thief ain’ “evil”, she’s a little greedy, sure, an’ doesn’ mind helpin’ herself ta other people’s stuff, but she’s actually a good person … she’s jus’ a little on the selfish side.

Seen plenty ah Necromancers what take their duty as “farriers of the dead” ta heart an’ believe they’re doin’ good. Also, callin’ a spirit back ta take revenge on its killers or ta help its living ancestors/loved ones/friends ain’ necessarily evil dependin’ on your culture.

Considerin’ all the classes spend their time killin’ people … and sometimes for some pretty iffy reasons … I’d say they’re all about as evil as ya wanna make ’em.

I’m sorry I stepped outta yer box, don’ worry, if

“Let’s go kill Svanir!”
Why?
“Because they whorship Dragon and they attack our people!”
But, don’ you whorship Bear and attack their people?
“That’s different, they’re Evil!”

“Let’s go kill Centaurs!”
Why?
“Because they’re killin’ our people and trying to take our lands!”
But, don’ you kill their people, an’ didn’t these used ta be their lands?
“That’s different, they’re Evil!”

It’s all a matter of how ya wanna play it.

Not quoting because too much stuff.

Forgot about Eye in the North. Thank you.

Did not know that the world was that big! However, still, there’s not a whole lot I feel you can really do with that. More areas only goes so far, and it would only be an amount of time until they started feeling samey.
However, that does depend on how ArenaNet does it. They could pull it off and do it incredibly with everywhere in the kitten world being unique.

Although, yes, Greataxe is there, there’s still not much in the sense of weapons. There’s also whip, I suppose. Spear is already there for underwater. I have the feeling that after ~ 2 years of Beta they would have added more weapons for specific classes. I can’t see new weapon selections for already existing classes unless they add a brand new one.

I already though of races as well, but that will, once again, only go so far. It would be cool until you hit level 28~30 and start going to Lion’s Arch. Plus, most people seem pretty happy, even ecstatic about the races so far. I’m not saying that it’s not a good idea, but I’m not sure I’d be driven to play more just because of a new race.

I guess they could do more underwater. I really want to see more of that, especially full maps for sPvP rather than just Raid on Capricorn.
