Tyria mastery-a grinding nightmare
I couldn’t agree more – I have also 9 level 80s and I’m out of mastery points – I need 12 more points to finish everything and I don’t think it will be possible – I don’t have 100s of gold for useless cultural, doing the living story 2 achievements seems not doable for me anyway.
My whole guild has left the game – they didn’t like HOT because of the difficulty and the grind for everything has just become unbearable.
I’m pretty much a sad panda at this point.
Let me be the first to say I love HoT mastery! It’s fun and totally not grindy. I wish I could say the same for Tyria. I have 9 level 80’s and am on the last tier of Tyria mastery and have run out of points. The only way I can get any more is to grind every story achieve which means doing each chapter more than 9 times over, spend 100’s of gold on cultural I don’t want or be forced into fractals, which only give a few points anyways.
Even though I have 100% map complete on 2 out of 9 level 80 toons , I wouldn’t mind mapping with toons that need it for points, or redoing jps or dungeons or at least something a bit more fun than endlessly redoing story chapters or spending a ton of gold on armor I don’t want. I thought anet wanted to take the grind OUT of the game-not put it back in with spades.
Disappointing and the end of my Tyria Mastery for now :O(
Your grind may be a bit more complicated then you thought.
Joshua Diaz.6402:
Just as a heads up, the Mastery Points for Personal Story are awarded on a per-chapter basis. So once you complete Chapter 1 and earn the Achievement for it, you’ve earned the Mastery Point for Chapter 1. This includes each different starting storyline: I believe the right names are: Graduation Day, For The Legion!, Crime and Punishment, Rising to the Challenge, and Waking from the Nightmare. Similarly, whichever Order you join, there’s just one Mastery Point there.
Hopefully this helps clarify the total number of Mastery Points you should be expecting from your previous accomplishments in Tyria. That said, the different stories really are fantastic, and should definitely be experienced, but for your own pleasure, and not for Mastery Points.
Erinyes-I run a Guild and we are small (because we focus on the right sort of people) at about 45 members but active! Feel free to whisper me in game and come join us :O)
@ Roundabout-and by default Joshua :O) -ty for your reply! I have completely done each chapter of the story on one of my main toons and loved it. However, any mastery points I can get now mean I have to do the 9 achieves for EACH chapter, grinding each chapter over and over-I just can’t face it. I tried with the lum armor and got half the pieces but it got so aggravating I lost my will to live and quit the achieves. The idea of doing another 10 chapters with 9 achieves a piece is depressing…
When you say “different stories” do you mean doing each complete story with a different class (race) each time? And If so-do I get mastery points if say, I do the story all over again with an Asuran? I completed the story with a Sylvari so far.
That quote still confuses me to no end but what I think it means is that there’s only the one Tyria Mastery Point to be had for each chapter of the Personal Story.
So if you’ve done all of the original PS chapters on a Sylvari there’s no more points to be had if you complete the PS chapters again with an Asura and chose a different Order to join.
If only we had been told exactly how all of those Skill Point scrolls would be tallied once things were changed. Had I known then that they would be tallied as points only once they were used on a character…I would have used them all up immediately. I have over three thousand shards. With nothing to spend them on. I maxed out the Pact Commander line only to see I wouldn’t have enough to get beyond the first rank of Legendaries. Would I spend them differently now had I known it would only unlock one full line? No.
Guess I need to allocate time to finish all of the Starter stories. ‘Course I won’t need to really worry about it until they release some new Legendaries that are actually appealing…so there is that.

The stupid thing is .. if you have done it for all races nefore HoT you have got 5 points
but if you have never done it before you only get 1 point.
Personally i did it on 3 races before and got points for every of those 3 races, however
now doing it for Charr don’t gave me any more points.
And i need still 19 points, and that i am not able to get the 6 missing points from
the story really is annoying as hell .. especially since i also have mo intention to
do stupid LS2 achievements or things like collecting all ambrite weapons.

It also contradicts the in game UI. According to the achievements panel there is a separate mastery point for each race’s story section, just like you get a separate point for killing each of the triple head wurm’s heads (this is the most similar thing I can think of).
And I did not want to be “forced” into minigames with HoT, but here we are. It is a year long practice of Anet to make content obsolete, play with their rewards or simply not reachable anymore after a time. Then you have the choice to either play it when it is up, suck it up that you will never get it, pay for it or go down the grindy way like I did with minigames.
I also thinks this sucks, but realistically spoken, that are your alternatives.

Interesting … I had done all story achievements of all races and orders before the expansion launched, and I only got one point per story chapter, no duplicates. Are you sure those extra points were from race stories and not from some other achievements you’ve overlooked?
I don’t want or be forced into fractals, which only give a few points anyways.
Actually there’s just about enough points in fractals to finish the fractal masteries, which you can easily skip if you don’t intend to play fractals anyway, so those shouldn’t be an issue.
Should you however insist on filling out the fractal masteries anyway, many of the fractal achievements that give mastery points are pretty easy to do. Check the wiki on which fractal level has which fractal island, and go for the lowest level that island is available at. All of the achievements can be done in fractals up to lvl 20 except for one.

I browesed through all categories i think and clicked through all those achievements,
thank god you don’t see the points you earned directly, and after all when i
counted all those story achievements i had (9 for 10,20,30 on 3 races) i got
nearly the number of points i actually had .. +-1 i think, but like i said, the
UI is soooo bad to actually count what you have gotten.

HoT mastery is grind nightmare stuck on 4 maps, Tyria is wonderful, i need 1.5m XP to complete Tyria and no grind was done, I have a wide range of events to complete over 20 plus maps, I can do the world boss train, hit up Drytop or SW, even run dungeons, HoT map content is small, stuck in the same none dynamic event world, HoT is boring horrible grind…
I’m not a completest, if I can play the game get the stuff I want/like I’m OK. I had planned on doing the Tyrian Masterys and not buy the early Masterys and spend my remaining 9 points I was sitting on toward Auto Loot. Nope, seems although Anet gives me a choice of whether or not I spend the points but they don’t give me the choice to move on to the next level. Hey Anet that’s not a choice!
I should have expected this from the new control freak Anet. I had faulty expectations. I had pretty much got over the concept that they consider repeating content is new content and that busy work is entertaining.
This helped me make up my mind, I was on the fence whether to start another game or not. I’m going to preorder Black Desert and get beta access on the 16th. I’d rather be aggravated by a new game than deal with the above fun and games. Anet just lost it’s way.

OP is referring to the points not the EXP.
It’s suppose to take a long time. It’s only “grinding nightmare” because you want to unlock everything yesterday. They are account wide abilities that any level 80 can contribute to.
Accept that these aren’t going to come tomorrow and simply play the game as you had been playing it before HoT.

The HoT masteries are even worse. Itzel Leadership gives you access to a fight and chest(once a day) that was apparently designed to demonstrate how to completely screw up the effort to reward ratio. I expect Exalted Purification and Nuhoch Proving to the be same. 3 worthless masteries gating slightly more useful ones.
Ty all for your great responses! @ behellagh-honestly I don’t want to unlock everything yesterday. The grinding nightmare comes in if I want to have the satisfaction of FINISHING Tyria mastery. The only way to get the points to put on the mastery is to either grind story over and over doing all the achieves or grind drytop (I had forgotten that one!) to make a bunch of weapons I don’t want-all for one mastery point. This is what I’m disappointed with-being FORCED to grind if I want to complete the Tyria Mastery. Surely there could have been a more fun way to get these last points needed for last tier. I have enjoyed playing HoT slowly as we waited so long for this expansion, I’m not one of the ones that had 123 mastery points by day 2 lol. I’m hoping Anet listens and adds new content that will give mastery points in addition to rewards-I have no problem getting the last tier of points over the next year, but what I’m not going to do is make myself miserable with endless grinding of story achieves or the despicable dry top.
@ Rasimir-thanks for that pro tip!
You cannot get mastery points by grinding!
All Tyria-mastery points are Achievements and you can get Achievements only once per account, and nothing is rewarded for repetition.
That you miss points means: you did not played some parts of the game so far. So something new to do, not some grind of what you already did.
Should you do not know where you have open mastery points: go to the achievement tab, all achievements with open mastery points have a flag (and the groups with open MP-achievements as well). Another tip: if you do not own LS2, you missed a lot MPs.

lol, ok, read OP, he should have done the stories, I only needed to get 2 mastery points, i had like 40 something Tyria MPs when HoT launched.

Huh? Yesterday I killed the Karka Queen and got a Mastery point. I’d killed the Karka Queen many times in the past. Explain please.

You did it the first time since HoT-release where the achievement got introduced?
Yeah. My point is I’ve done this, repeating things is not content it’s make work. I grow weary of this.

Okay, I have to ask this…
If you “don’t want to be forced into Fractals”, then why not just do every Tyria Mastery except for the Fractal masteries? Leave those ones for last, the ones you don’t have enough points for, and then it won’t matter that you don’t have enough points for them, as they’re content that you don’t want to do.
If you someday change your mind and decide you do want to do Fractals, then you’d be able to earn the extra Mastery points you need to max out your Fractal masteries by… doing Fractals.
Does that make sense to you, or is it just me?
You can get a lot more Masterypoints for core than you actually need to have to unlock all of the masteries. Yes, quite a few come from the LS2 achievements. You feel these are a grind but they arent so bad. I mean, ive done em all with a friend with little trouble, except for a few ones that took a bit more effort. Find someone that knows the mechanics and ask them if they want to help you, youll have em done in no-time.
Heck, i can help you with a few of em if you want to. Ive done that for my guild numerous times.
As for the ambrite weapons, another way to get the mats for those would be the pvp reward track. You dont even really need to be any good at pvp; win or fail you always progress your track. Myself i combined the pvptrack with occassional drytop events and sandstorms. Did what i wanted, when i wanted it. No rush, no grind.

I just went and checked this. I did all of them before HoT and the numbers add up the way Joshua described. Where do you think the extra 5 points are from? If there are any extras it should be 14 (see below, 3×4 from racial, 2 from order).
The details in case anyone is interested.
Racial
1 point – Chapter 1
Crime and Punishment
For the Legion!
Waking from the Nightmare
Rising to the Challenge
Graduation Day
1 point – Chapter 2
Family Reunion
Bloodying the Past
A Season of Growth
Things Best Left Behind
Legacy Code
1 point – Chapter 3
Storming the Castle
From Howl to Silence
Branching Out
Brawn over Brains
Something Lost, Something Gained
Order
1 point – Chapter 4
Defending History, Informing the Future
Some Must Fight, That All May be Free
To Know the Unknown
Racial Sympathy
1 point – Chapter 5
A Friend In Deed
Claw Island
1 point – Chapter 6
This Far, No Further
Greatest fear
1 point – Chapter 7
The Cost of Victory
1 point – Chapter 8
Savior of Tyria
That is a total of 8 points for completing the personal story on 1 character.
Unless I forgot something there are a total of 17 extra Tyrian points, I have all Tyrian masteries maxed out with 5 points left and 12 more I haven’t obtained yet. That means you can skip all of LS2, Triple Trouble, Dive Master and 3 other things. If you don’t care about fractals then there is another 11 things you can skip.
The HoT masteries are even worse. Itzel Leadership gives you access to a fight and chest(once a day) that was apparently designed to demonstrate how to completely screw up the effort to reward ratio. I was shocked how pathetic the Exalted Purification chest was. I’m putting the last two Itzel track masteries at the bottom of my to-do list.
How is Nuhoch Alchemy? Worthwhile?

That is easy enough to check. Go to Tangled Depths and fight some Chak. If they don’t give you much trouble then you probably won’t notice much benefit from it.

Tell me about it, while I’m partially through the 4 tier of Pact Mastery I’m nearly out of points in central Tyria. In three years I barely made more than a couple of alts, not necessarily one of each race, never completed the personal story or LW Season 2 or Silverwastes, which I ran through to get to into HoT. I don’t have the gold to buy every piece of Cultural Armor for one mastery point. I’ve barely done any dungeon, never played fractals. Triple Trouble and Tequatl are way above my skill level, and like dungeons, fractals, you can’t really pug them (meaning not knowing what to do other than damage). Yet I have over 3000 hours in this game.
While earning XP is a simple matter, finding what awards you Mastery points is impossible to know unless you do a deep dive through your achievement tabs, something I never really cared about, AP simply accumulates and you get a chest and occasionally you complete one and might get a title.

And each achievement category has a special icon denoting whether or not it gives a HoT mastery point, Tyria mastery point or no point at all.
But you still have to scroll through them to find which achievement of that category has the mastery point tied to it. Until I read the wiki article I didn’t even check the achievement tab to notice those icons. You select the dailies via the list that comes up when you claim your reward. There’s no reason to click on the achievements tab if pre-HoT they didn’t matter to you.

There’s a few new achievements, sure, but the vast majority of mastery points is behind old achievements. If you didn’t do those already as a veteran, you won’t be doing them if you keep playing like you played before. Because that way you still won’t get those old achievements.
I’ve had my best luck levelling my Tyria mastery through map completion on alts.

So lets see: You didnt finish any story, barely did dungeons, never did fractals, triple trouble or wurm. No LS2/ silverwastes either. Yeah, that would be a major part of the game that you never delved into. That, ofcourse, is perfectly fine if that is your thing, but you can hardly blame anet for that.
I blame ANet because during the bulk of the MP in core Tyria are locked up behind LWS2, game events and activities that were for the most part toxic for newcomers and running every race through the personal story. Most didn’t even have an achievement tied to that activity until HoT dropped. I’ve done Tequtl (pre-revamp) and the Karka Queen but those Boss Achievements weren’t added until HoT so now I have to do them again, assuming I have the time to kill to get on a decent Tequtl map and wait for it to spawn.
I’ve may have played a lot of hours, just not a lot all in a row and if it’s not the time those events spawn, guess it’s too bad for players like me.
RIP City of Heroes
On the other hand, they can hardly have hundreds of masterypoints available when you dont need that many. Ill concede the point on LS2 since you would have to buy that as a newcomer (unless that is unlocked with HoT as they said you would get the core game and all expansions for free whenever a new expansion comes out). For the rest though, you will have to play the game to get masterypoints.
The boss events happen every 3 hours, constantly. You could plan for it in advance. Certainly isnt as hard as it used to be to get into a good map either.
But, far be it from me to tell you what todo. Let me ask you; What would you like the masterypoints to be locked behind?
Let me be the first to say I love HoT mastery! It’s fun and totally not grindy. I wish I could say the same for Tyria.(
Really? Tell me your secret, because it’s the exact opposite for me: Tyria is easy as hell (because there’s so much to do), and HoT is taking forever.
I’ve may have played a lot of hours, just not a lot all in a row and if it’s not the time those events spawn, guess it’s too bad for players like me.
They spawn on a rigid schedule and though Teq. is on a 4.5 hour cycle and Karka 3 (I think) it must be possible for you to be able to schedule one play session appropriately.
Maybe it’s different on NA (if you’re on NA) but on EU I get Teq. every evening and only once in the last several weeks did it fail and only for the first time yesterday did I find a map with only a handful of players after I got DCed off a full one.
So yes, their schedule is a bit of an issue but clearly there’s plenty of opportunities to get one.
Do the fractal tasks as they r quick n grants u alot of it. Im done with all mastery pts and i never did any LS2 achis, didnt get emperors, didnt do jumping puz, and only killed 1 wurm head.
I used to be a power ranger, now not sure anymore

For some people, ‘scheduling’ when they have to log on to a game just to get something they aren’t that interested in doing isn’t what they consider ‘fun’. It’s an imposition on their leisure time, being told ‘you must do this then’ in order to gain a mastery point that they require to unlock the masteries.
Other people might only be able to play between 9 and 10pm at night due to family etc – try scheduling a Teq around that. Others don’t want to spend their entire evening’s relaxation trying to get a taxi in to an event that has already started and is probably full when they log on.
Others have mainly played wvw, and have very few mastery points as a result (and strangely, no mastery points in wvw- fractals yes, locked behind JPs yes, but wvw nope). wvw players are also punished for exp they earn, as that counts towards nothing. And punished again, as you can only gain HP tokens on the toon you want to use them on, so basically you have to use a sub- optimal toon in wvw in order to get it up to scratch, harming your side’s chances.
I don’t like what they locked most of the points behind (adventures, kitten ..), so it’s made it easy for me to drift off to Guild Wars where I can play as I want.
I’ve may have played a lot of hours, just not a lot all in a row and if it’s not the time those events spawn, guess it’s too bad for players like me.

I would have preferred more MP in what was the original core Tyria, before Southsun Cove, Dry Top and The Silverwastes. Making it not a requirement to do the personal story in every race or buying every cultural armor, which is nearly 2K gold to get. Getting MP from “normal play” like Exploration achievements for each region (not the same as map complete). MP tied to the higher level zones like Orr and Frostgorge Sound. Unlocking the Temples in Orr and doing Claw of Jormag meta, start to finish.
As it is, there are several MP in core Tyria that can only be described as grinding like crafting all the ambrite weapons and bioluminescent armor which is as ridiculous as, coming back to this, buying all 90 cultural armors.
The thing that bothers me the most is you can take a single character through HoT and get all the MP there yet you need to take a character of each race though the PS in the core game to earn all the MP there.

No … you had to take a character of all races to the personal story BEFORE HoT
was released to get all points, if you do the storys now on different races you
won’t even get those points anymore, and they now say it works as intendet,
or they don’t even have a clue how it should work and everyone tells different
stuff.
Personally i at least have those 3 × 3 points for norn, humans and asura that i
did before HoT, but i didn’t get any for 10 and 20 charr story, and first support
told me they know about that and i should wait for a fix, then a dev posted
it works as intended, and then support told me they can’t do anything and
live with it (more or less).
Best MMOs are the ones that never make it. Therefore Stargate Online wins.
