This idea is probably as old as guild wars 2 , but I would like to have a discussion around it and maybe even a dev response.

Some people might know a “hardcore” mode , like for example in guild wars 1 where you had hard missions or hard map´s to clear.
Anet? – People complain about no content , wouldn’t it be so easy to create a huge wave of content just by adding a hardcore mode ? You don’t need to do a lot.

<Include a button for hardcore mode>
<port players to an instance of the map>
<scale the enimies up that it gets difficult killing them- quensdale example enemies lvl 83>
<set the respawn timer of enemies to infinity>
<deactivate the world boss on this instance>
<change the events that they activate once you run into the area note1>
<progress bar of how many enimies killed>
<add a new title for clearing all maps>
<add rewards where players feel satisfied>

Tada you just created content for many hours
Of couse you need to figure out a good scaling that it is challing but not impossible , but I know that you can do that.

What´s your opinion? Could this really work just with this? Wouldn’t it be better content to play together as a 5man group? Since Anet got a good scaling system the whole mode could scale from 1-5 players even.

I think its all a scaling factor and it should be a challenging mode. The low level maps should be a bit easier but still hard and higher maps should be extremely hardcore, but I definitely think this is a good way to create new and hard content. We take all you loved about gw1 and take into gw2

note1* What do you think , should events be disabled or enabled ?

Any other ideas ?

“You don’t need to do a lot”. That’s funny, how do you know that?

So if I understand correctly, this “hardcore” mode of yours can only work for either solo players or a party, because it has to be completely closed off the real game world.

I wouldn’t call this “hardcore” in any way, we are talking about general pve here which is very easy. I don’t understand the purpose of this mode though, just to make an instance of every zone? What’s the point? I wouldn’t call this “content”

You scale the enimies up to higher level for example , they might even get new skills and so on.. That you instead of fighting lvl 10 enemies in queensdale – you fight lvl 85 enemies

Im not sure how segregating the community with instances is good for the game. Nor do I see how this is easy to profram and balance and test without taking dev time away from actual new content.

If you compare this with the effort of for example creating a new map – then the differnce should be huge

Yes, but a new map also adds to the world. Raising numbers in what is essentially a personal map instance doesn’t.

As for the it doesn’t take much, the devs would have to:

  • go through every mob in the game and rebalance them, potentially adding new skills to them.
  • go through the code to disable bosses in personal instances.
  • work on server code to enable personal map instances.

I think a better way of adding a ‘hardcore’ mode would be to add a toggle that gimps your character (think gambits; things like lower endurance regen, perma conditions, increased cooldowns, ect) while adding something that benefits your reward gain (+MF%, +Gold%, title tracks: how many enemies killed in each zone (resets on death),world boss kills(doesn’t count if you die, say, 3 times-to account for lag- or if you don’t get gold participation)

Life is a journey.
Time is a river.
The door is ajar.

Do you like carrying up-leveled players through level 80 content? Because that’s what it would be like. People would turn on “hardcore” mode and spam 1 while following a zerg, further increasing their rewards, which is already multiplied compared to doing the exact same content without a zerg.

If they wanted to implement GW1 style hard mode areas, they should have done it with dungeons. Dungeons should have scaled for 1-5 players and treated as explorable mini areas rather than 5-man dungeons. It would have made them more popular at the very least and added a lot of content to the game. Story modes for example could have been a part of the personal story, rather than an optional dungeon related to it. Adding something like vanquishing to a dungeon would be easy.

That kind of sounds like one of the arguments that were made against MF when it was still a gear stat.

And your tone is reminiscent of the so-called “elitists”.

Oh but story modes are part of the personal story already! You know, Zhaitan and stuff!
