Ok, I started a new character with the sole interest of a little bit role-play (mostly background) and the priority of just enjoying the game because that’s what everyone says to do. Just enjoy the experience, don’t rush, and it will all work out, right? Now, here I am at level 53 wrapping up the first of the level 15+ zones (Kessex Hills). I have PLAYED the game…not farmed….played the game in this zone for six hours, and I have enough materials for one inscription. (???) It’s not DR because I’m getting Tier 1 and 3, just not Tier 2. I won’t buy off of the TP because, first, I’m tired of being forced in that direction when that was not what was advertised. Second, it’s against the rules for my character’s lore anyway. So, please, what I am doing wrong. I don’t want to farm certain bosses in other zones. I want to play the game and enjoy the content…and, of course, kill everything in sight for drops. But, this is ridiculous. At this pace, I’ll be level 80, probably in the 35 zones, and unable to craft with Tier 3 because I get literally, next to zero, Tier 2 mats. This is seriously becoming my last straw as I can’t even just enjoy the game even they way they advertise me to play it. I feel like I’m playing a free-to-play mmo where everything behind the scenes is aiming toward the cash shop. But, that doesn’t make sense because I wouldn’t have to use real money. I guess I have to take my gold, convert it crystals, by a cute mini, do a /dance, and uninstall because I just don’t see how it’s possible to craft and just play the game as intended.

I don’t know if this is some kind of elaborate in-joke or something that is making fun of the things people complain about (especially with your bizarre derail about the cash shop at the end), but on the off chance that you’re serious…

You’ll want to find out the specific zones that have the individual materials you’re looking for and seek them out specifically. If you post what those are I can even help you eliminate that dangerous and time-consuming step as well.

I understand what you are saying Hawkian and appreciate the suggestion…but then I’m farming zone to zone instead of enjoy the content of the game. I’m learning about the centaur problems and all of that Kessex Hills, and now I have to go out immersion, go into some totally different zone just get some small bones or whatever?

Dear OP,

I zoned into Lion’s Arch today just in time to hear you spew out a curse-filled tirade about spending laurels on materials, and how at level 53 you only had enough materials saved up to make OOOOOOONE level 15 inscription (blue, not green). I watched people try and help you. I watched people (like myself) try and get you to calm down enough to offer a coherent explanation of what you needed help with, so we could try and help you.

Instead, you chose to continue to swear at us, to insult us, to for some bizarre reason drag RL politics into the mix though nobody else breathed a word of it, and to say how terrible the server is. There were a lot of people who would have been willing to give you help and advice if you’d just taken a minute to breathe and say what exactly you were looking for.

Even now having made this post, you STILL haven’t said what it is you’re looking for or want, other than a vague ‘T2 mats’. Which ones? Where have you been looking? What are you killing for them? What does the cash shop have, at all, to do with the state of low-level materials in the open world? When I took my first character through the game, I completed every map as I went along, trying to stay in a difficulty around my current level as I went. I don’t remember running into problems finding materials that way until I ran into T4 and T6 crafting tiers, and even then that was pretty easily solved by deciding what I wanted (scales, blood, totems, whatever), looking up what sort of thing dropped those (either the mobs themselves or white-quality loot bags from a level range), and ruthlessly slaughtering a metric ton of them.

If you change your mind at some point and would actually like help figuring out where to go and what to kill for the specific things you’re looking for instead of just knee-jerk screaming about how terrible the server is, feel free to shoot me a private message and I’ll see what I can do.

“I watched people try and help you. I watched people (like myself) try and get you to calm down enough to offer a coherent explanation of what you needed help with, so we could try and help you.”

That part is an outright lie, and you know it. You are just trying to sugarcoat what you really saw, which was an onslaught on me right away. Yes, I was upset…very upset. No, not one person offered any constructive help. The whole situation would have been avoided if just one person in the community knew anything about conflict resolution rather than how to fuel a fire. I know, because usually I’m the one trying to calm someone down. So, please, spare me the “oh, we tried to help” lie or I’ll post screenshots, including my profanity. I’m fine with owning up to my behavior, but please don’t pretend that everyone else wasn’t instigating it like on a 4th grade playground.

I’m buying the mats with laurels. Case closed. And I’m not leaving TC because I’m better than running from your hostile LA chat scene. You and all of your friends want to Block? Fine. My life will go on.

If immersion is really your refuge here…

Would it really be more realistic if every zone had every material you needed in it?

I don’t really see how buying things off of the trading post would hurt immersion (I know you said your character was against it in your personal lore, but there are many ways around that). Drop rates for most mats are actually pretty high right now and most mats can be obtained simply by playing. If you’re having difficulties you can try a few things: look on the wiki and see what enemies drop the bundle bags -example being undead dropping moldy bags- and make sure to hit them up when you’re in an area. this can be done without actually “farming” them pretty easily. Also, since your specific character can’t use the tp, why not use an alt to gather the needed mats and deposit them in your bank. Then you have them at the ready. I really don’t know what other advice to offer you, low level crafting is pretty much handed to us at this point in the game with the generous drop rates. Now once you hit closer to max, things get a little rougher and that’s a whole different story.

Hawkian, I think dissatisfaction in hunting particular mobs was when a bat dropped a large scale or something weird like that. They don’t let it be too predictable (all about bot-prevention). I just want to play and then maybe find out, “oh, I need a few more bloods”. In this case, it was six hours of playing to see one inscription…and not even a green one. Anyway, I’m over it. Even devessi and I have started a friendship from this mess. But I can see the possibility of changing maps.

Nay, that’s pretty much what I’m going to do. Good idea. Plan the mats. Max the craft right away or have the mats ready at stages. It’s not as ideal as the main doing it, but it’s a really a good Plan B.

I usually go for rare veggie pizza, but hey why not!

Here’s what’s funny though. I remember leveling a chef…guess what what wasn’t dropping?

Now it makes sense….it’s no different than any other mmo. Looking for X? Good luck…but you’ll get Y and Z that you don’t need!….until you want Y…then you get X and Z….and so it goes

I really like Nay’s idea, but another idea is to not craft at all! It’s not like the world will end over three levels and saving money by buying the gear. But I always like to craft in mmo’s. Ironically, crafting is always what winds up annoying me on account of either drop rates or over-leveling what you craft (and now don’t need). No game will ever get this right for the reason usually provided on forums. Crafting is always bottom priority for developers….except right now where this game currently has high emphasis on ascended weapons.

It’s actually been a problem since day one but since most people have been buying from the TP and not thinking about it it’s hardly been a problem seen since just after launch.

I myself reported on this problem just after launch both in the bug reports and the crafting forums because it was initially a problem even for the TP, new characters new economy no gold to speak of so yeah it’s still there. Unfortunately they have a skritt with a calendar running the scheduling for fixing bugs/design flaws so this was most likely overlooked entirely in the beginning when we were all talking about it and the focus turned to backpacks and rings from fractals rather than the open world crafting community because they suddenly thought that that portion of the community wasn’t important. If the other posters to this thread need proof of this just look at how they handled the ascended gear upgrade system, like we crafters who already reached 400 the real way thru hard work, actually needed another 100 points, such an insult.

The only thing I can suggest is to either farm creatures preferably before you reach level 80 so you don’t have to contend with DR or to use the laurels or TP. Those are the only solutions until they pay attention to the crafting community once again.

The other option is to not craft. You can actually save your daily jars up of karma and gear yourself since people are farming the heck out of temples again. I’ve recently done this myself with all of the problems that come with not having a high enough magic find number yet to even get many of the materials needed.

@OP
I feel your pain and I found crafting difficult at first also. I do recommend that you try some of the suggestions in the thread. esp to go to other maps and farm. T2 mats are harder to get in my opinion. I also want to tell you, that is noted above is – DR: diminishing returns. This means that you will probably get less of what you are looking for by staying on the same map for 6 hours trying to farm bloods, etc.
I would go to Snowden Drifts for an hour to farm Svanir for small totems once/day when I needed them and then leave b/c of what Tigirius pointed out. This was a big issue for me; I spent days in Timberline Falls on the grawl there for T4 totems too. There are mobs that have a few different drops; the Arcdotus in Frostgorge drop bloods and claws, fyi. Good luck

How did you manage to play in Kessex for six hours? There are other starter zones…or is it a lore thing that you have to stay in the racial home area (I did this for a while)?

Anyway, unfortunately to level any craft you have to farm. Take jeweler for instance, how many of the same copper nodes have you mined by now?

Errrm no one forces you to leave zone just to go farm some different tier maps. You want to experience each map/zone and each particular event line, story etc then why would hunting for tier 2 mats in a zone derail progression, its not like you need to endlessly craft gear to complete a map or even the next one on.. plus you pick up so much trash loot along the way, crafting at lower levels is all but meaningless.
So why do you need to break away from your immersion in a map.. the only one choosing to do that is you.
