Just need enough to disrupt service. 100ms “could” keep it under the radar long enough to get enough people really P.O.ed.

Yes this situation is annozng, but we cen only wish good luck to devs in finging what caused it. My gues is missing character or call of depricated function. Or some stuf with network i dont understant.
And to ease this situation I add one programmer joke. Unfortunetly it is too close to reality.
Every program contain atleast one faulty line. And every program can by writen one line shorter. So in the end we will get program which is one line long and that line is faulty one. :-)

Exactly, and to add; it may be completely normal for some to have 100ms ping regularly (depending on their location / distance from server)! Even high “lag” could be up to 1000ms absent a DDOS.

As far as I can recall this is the first time that the game has ever actually been DOWN for more than 5 minutes at a time, and 5 is being generous.

Whew! So it’s not just me. I should’ve checked the forums earlier. Thanks for working to fix this Anet. Really enjoying the new content – a little down time is well worth it!

you do realise that there’s no set outcome to a DDoS right? usually the goal is to overload a server and bring it down, but if the DDoS doesn’t use enough requests, or if the server can handle the attack better than expected, then the end effect is reduced. so a poorly executed DDoS against a well prepared server could conceivably result in little more than a minor ping increase.

I’m surprised no one reads the forums before they reply o: especially with the dev response.

Figured I would go check some other games I havent played in a while as I wait, ToR and Neverwinter both down for maintenance though. I feel dirty just for looking. I guess with other games, regular maintenance is more common. Unexpected downtime sucks though as I was all settled in ready for an evenings playtime, hope it comes good soon.

Well it seems to be back up, but I am still unable to login. With all my characters, when I try to log into one of them I get a long loading screen (5 mins +) then get a network error. The map doesn’t even start loading, stays at 0%.

Try closing your game completely and then loading it back up and giving it another try.

A character load attempt > close game > load again seems to be what fixes the problem for others still experiencing the issue.

Had my hopes up when I saw the launcher patch and was able to get into character select, but still getting a white screen and network error popup when I try to log into a character.

Oh well, if it’s not going to be looked at until your morning I guess I’ll just play Witcher 3. Glad I got my dailies and home node mining in before all of this.

Phew. Glad that’s over. I’ve seen the real world, and let me tell you it’s a scary place.
There are no way points and you only get one life. That’s harsh.
