So I was thinking the other day about how Water combat has been removed in PvP, and essentially removed from WvW. In the rest of the game, most water combat is a bit boring compared to land combat.

I think the problem is a bit obvious. Many utility skills are disabled underwater, and you have a total of two weapons, leaving no room for much build diversity.

I think the solution is obvious. Add more underwater weapons, more utility skills that work underwater (or at least function differently), and more interesting goals, etc.

And the best way to do that, of course, is to start working on the next expansion pack, to eliminate BUBBLES THE ELDER DRAGON. Set up entire ancient, sunken cities, new races to interact with en masse (I’m thinking specifically of the largos for instance), maybe new quaggan sub species, things like that.

My only question is, would people enjoy swimming. People love flying, but many players just dont seem to enjoy swimming as much… even though swimming is, for all intents and purposes in a video game, flying.

Anyway, just my two cents. Bubbles. More underwater build options. Atlantis (or the GW2 equivalent.). Largos and Quaggan.

I really like underwater stuff. It’s a shame people don’t care.

I like the idea as well, as for the execution…
Apart from the points mentioned in the OP, one big problem is that you cannot solo most underwater stuff since you very easily get overwhelmed by multiple enemies attacking you at the same time. But since few people care about underwater you will seldom find the necessary allies and so even people who would like to do more underwater in the end give up.

You can solo underwater stuff as much as you can solo an ground stuff. The problem is that people refuse to play underwater stuff so any group events/bosses always fail.

Swimming would have been better if they just stuck to the World of Warcraft/Rift way of handling under water combat… its 10 time better than GW2’s underwater combat, yet it wasnt even a major feature in those games like it was hyped up to be here.

Yeh I love underwater stuff, don’t really know why it’s always being said that players don’t like it? Maybe the lack of builds, as you say Morfedel.

Anyway, yes, I’d love to see proper underwater content, cities, activities, etc

Why is it better? I didnt play either game much at all, barely even. So I’m not familiar with their way of doing it.

It may be a L2P issue on my part, but when, to give an example, an asuran research team that I’m supposed to revive is surrounded by 6 risen bull sharks there is no way I can get close to them and stay alive – and that wasn’t a group event.

So much left that I wanted to see…

I’ve posted this in another thread, I’ll post it here. This is specifically for those who say “oh it’s not that bad, I don’t see why people don’t like it”.

In the personal story mission “Forewarned is Forearmed” where you have to go into the sewers with Forgal. Any mob that is underwater in that – and I mean ANY mob there – can magically swim through the kittening BRICK walls. Then you’re screwed if you use a projectile because guess what? They’re obstructed! And then on top of that, Forgal magically kittening follows the mob through the BRICK walls!

That’s just a snowflake on the tip of the iceberg.

@BolkovonHarnfeldt agreed. The execution is horrid, but the idea is nice. I remember at release I was hyped for underwater combat. Now I’m just “Oh Talos please no not this again!”

I like the underwater stuff, for most part. Not experienced the issues that other tell about tbh. But since it is that many I wont argue about it. Might depend a little on which profession it is too. I really enjoy underwater combat on my main, which is a ranger, but not so much on my thief or necro.

It would be incredibly sad if it never got expanded upon, as there is much potential, many possible beautiful maps (what I would not give to swim in a possibly “melted” jade sea). So maybe some adjustments needs to be done, for it to be a better experience for everyone, and then add to it.

I like underwater combat, but sadly atm there’s not much to do with it. Another problem is the underwater weapons are 2 handers but do the same damage as 1 handers. so character dps is a lot lower in water, but the enemy HP doesn’t seem to be any lower, this makes fights take longer. Oh and we need better Aquabreathers, atm they’re only available upto rare, and only in a few stats, I want to be able to get an aquabreather that matches the stats of the rest of my armour.

Disagree.
Here is a special dynamics and unique mechanics, unique animation and so on. And there it is not “realized”, but simply “allowed” as the same thing as ground combat, but just under water.

And guess what? All the skills work underwater. Which means your talent build isnt made useless like it is here when going underwater. Its all around better in those games gameplay wise. Its the reason they can afford to have major underwater pve content yet in GW2 the developers are trying to avoid it.

in Cataclysm they had a whole underwater zone for end game content and leveling.

Underwater’s many bugs and issues aside, my real issue with water content in GW2 is that swimming feels clunky and un-fun. I don’t want to slowly and awkwardly shift up and down while remaining fully horizontal facing, it makes navigation of water areas feel like a hassle.

Here’s how you can make it fun: make swimming feel like flying. That is to say, allow freedom of movement in any direction and allow the character to be MORE maneuverable, not less. Allow us to use the endurance bar like a speed boost rather than just a fixed-distance dodge.

Flying-based MMOs can be a lot of fun. Anybody who played Space Cowboy back in the day can tell you this would be totally excellent: youtu.be/BZNumfSjgJE (Basically, it’s Starfox Online.)

Additional want-to-haves: finish making all ground-target skills into enemy-target or projectiles. Find ways to enable all skills / utilities. Allow ALL weapons, not just the aquatics.

I really hope they’re planning on fully revamping underwater content when it comes time for handling the Deep Sea Dragon. If we just get a bunch of fight-water-themed-monsters-on-the-beach maps I’m going to be pretty dissapointed.

Is not it a right reflection of the physics of water – it constrains your movements, but allows you to move horizontally?..
Anyway, if you want to feel really “clunky” underwater combat – try BDO, or new Witcher, for example.
If we compare – the controllability and dynamics of swimming in this game – one of the best I’ve ever seen. And I’ve seen really a lot.

Depends on what class I’m playing. I absolutely despise underwater combat on my ele. It feels wrong and weak. I hate it. Where as I feel just as strong, if not stronger in some cases, on my ranger and thief.

I don’t want professions I enjoy to make me miserable playing them if I end up having to do a lot of underwater combat. That’s not cool. If they fixed some classes so they didn’t feel like garbage underwater then I would be more for this.

But yeah, having limited weapons and limited utilities makes underwater combat just less interesting and viable.
