So anyone from Anet going to post or explain what this massive update is or do we have to guess???
It’s supposed to be episode 3 of season 3, “A crack in the ice”
5kb/s
Sure didn’t want to finish that daily or anything.
Crack is supposed to drop on Monday, not today. Also if this is a maintenance build there needs to be more details regarding the changes given its sheer size. This is ridiculous.
If it’s security related this is all the information you’re going to get. They did say they got DDOS-ed like yesterday.
If it’s a preload on next week’s content then it’s better to have the update notes in one place, when said preloaded content is actually available in the game.
A security update would be on the back end, and not game client related with regard to a ddos. That’s a server issue for them to sort out. As for a preload, the need to tell us ahead of time as this is a massive update affecting game play in a major way. So no, not going to accept silence on this one from Anet. No one actively trying to play this game should.
How is it a massive update affecting gameplay? You get a 3 hour window to log off at your convenience and you are no longer forced out when you zone or switch character.
Given it took just a few mins to fully update and it was listed as a maintenance build (common in any MMO), I’m not entirely understanding what the issue is. I went to make a cuppa and it was done on return.
So zero info on this patch… and it is currently downloading 8-10 Kb/s ?
wtf?
And no, it is not my internet problem.. my internet is way faster than that…
Unfortunately, I just got home and had this massive update. Moving at a snails pace…bah.
ETA: anyone downloading this patch ever get in the game? I’m still at about 50%
(edited by Drucilla.3158)
Yep indeed a massive patch, hope it fixes the problem we are having lately
Yeah, and I’m expecting crickets from Anet, but as views of this thread grow in just under an hour…. obviously SOMEONE other than us are looking for answers. Imagine that Anet….people want info. Crazy huh?

Security updates to the back end can also require updates to the client.
I’m not sure why you think you have an alternative to accepting silence (if that’s what ANet chooses to do). You can accept little/no info and play; or you can not get the update and never play again.
(For what it’s worth: I think ANet should always release comprehensive patch notes, with more details than they usually do. I think they should generally release them in advance, whenever possible and assuming no spoilers/economic impacts. However, it’s their game and their decision about how much to tell us or when.)
Security updates to the back end can also require updates to the client.
If that’s what it was, I don’t think there would be a “Playable” threshold of about 19% on the patch. It would need to be fully loaded.
That might be part of it, but there’s more to it than that. I’m guessing security update along with some stuff they had ready to go, and it was easier to push it all together.

Gaile Gray: The maintenance patch was not related to the current connection issues. It was a means of testing update mechnisms and was not related to dealing with the current problems.
So it’s not related to the connection issues.
Perhaps, the test failed then. Very, very slow update.

Thank you for the clear voice of reason, Randulf.
As to the update, it was, as the notes said, a maintenance update. It didn’t change anything within the game, although yes, the download was large. But I believe it was maintenance on the update system itself. The update really was exactly what the notes explained, and any changes to the game would have been mentioned within the notes.
I usually update pretty darn quickly (maybe 7 minutes, at most – usually 2 or 3 minutes). This update took a bit over 45 minutes.
I hope, whatever it did, it makes updates faster (or, at least, stay at the rate they were [for me] previously).
System updates are always a good thing, it doesnt have to be in game content.
I work in the IT profession and things like this are a regular thing.
Nothing to get worked up about or anything like that.
I would love it if it was some form of y’know… optimization.. cough cough wink wink nudge nudge say no more
Most frustrating thing was that we was winning in WvW at the moment. But i know that maintenance is just for the good reasons.
They would not interrupt their company product if they wouldn’t have to. It’s like very other company.
They do it for us, to keep the game running smoothly.

Yes, thank the person pandering and ignore the people’s complaints.
A big unannounced update that downloads at a snail’s pace (5-10kb/s on a 100Mb line) isn’t very reasonable. In fact, the main problem here really is how long it took to download. 30 minutes is ridiculous.
Mine took 8 minutes so it didn’t waste much of my time to waste time? I dunno….
Inculpatus cedo.9234 posted in another thread recently this which is interesting.
Reports this morning that players in various former Soviet countries, among others, had been unceremoniously barred from accessing NCsoft MMORPGs WildStar and Guild Wars 2 appear to have been confirmed by an NCsoft community rep, though Guild Wars 2’s block seems to have been in error. – Might have something to do with that.

The update was out of date so they updated it.
Simples.
I guess the slow download speed was caused by the large number of individual files? At least with my 1G line, it seems strongly correlated between number of files indicated by the file counter, and download speed.
At least it’s GW2 where you can play right up until the update is ready and then as soon as you’ve downloaded it.
If this was any other MMO the servers would have been offline for several hours while the update was loaded onto the server and then you’d start downloading it and have to wait until it was complete to play.
And that’s not an exceptional situation for emergency updates, it’s the same process they go through for every single update, sometimes several times a week.
I understand it’s frustrating for people who only play GW2 but if players of my other MMO were only offline for the time it took them to download the update, even if it was an hour, they’d think it was the best patch ever.

Any reason why the uppdate was so slow? 5-10kbs ……

Couldn’t you play it when it hit the ‘playable’ mark on the progress bar? That’s what I did. Soon as it reached that point I was able to log in and play while it continued to download in the background.
I rather being kicked for 30min then having a whole day of servers down.

My appologies lady, but.. frankly, “maintenance” means so little as to mean nothing. Each patch, whether its to fix problems in Brisban, change routing information in the game to reduce DDOS attacks, or to launch new content is “maintenance”. Now, what you said about updating the game “update system itself”, THAT is what some of us nerdy network admin/programmer types are looking for in “patch notes”. TY for clarification, even tho, as I type this, I am waiting half an hour for a new game patch to finish downloading on my 20M connection, as it apparently did not download last night while I was playing.
So, it was a 300 Mb 20k files of nothing?
Really?
They maybe replaced a “way to do” certain things. If such “way to do” was common, you’ll end with a big patch that apparently did nothing.
In CSS, for example, you could have detected a single class that you need to change on its root. (To keep order and consistency, usually. “2”, “right” or “a” are classic examples of classes you’ll eventually need to change). If a single object had the class, no problem. But if there were many thousands with the class… big update.
I’d rather a non-snarky response 5 hours after a question about an update was asked.
The response wasn’t snarky. But, in your OP you came across as an kitten; you set the tone for this thread, and your subsequent posts were no better. If you can’t keep your temper under control and be tactful when you post, then don’t be surprised if others aren’t falling over themselves with politeness in response.
When you posted your OP, there was already mention in the Game Release Notes section that there was a maintenance build. I know because I checked… right when you posted, before you had any responses. There was no purpose to your thread except to use it as an excuse to complain… regardless if you believe it or not, that maintenance build was the explanation posted. Kitten happens, the downtime in this game is far less than many others I’ve played even when patching, and if there’s nothing they feel is necessary for us to know when they patch/update then they’re not going to tell us. Accept it and get over it.

So, it was a 300 Mb 20k files of nothing?
Really?
Really? Mine was 210MB for 17,000 files. Do you have extra languages?
I think it was due to the 17,000, mostly tiny files. Downloading and applying them are not an asynchronous process. Like how rotational and head latency torpedoes random read rates on conventional hard drives, the overhead of applying each file simply floored the running download rate average that’s displayed. The large files in the patch are downloaded at a pretty good clip but when it gets to the small files, poof.
I wouldn’t put it past some ISPs to see lots of tiny downloads as some kind of torrent and “shape” the transfer rate.

Get better internet? Mine was done in about 3-4 minutes.
Better than 150Mbps? Sure, if you will foot the bill.
Not necessarily the back-end only, maybe they pointed the client at some different DNS/Subnets to spread out more traffic to mitigate the DDOS issues. They wouldn’t tell you this anyway, You would have to packet cap. but either way this is just a scenario where client update would be needed dependant on how they already have things set up… unless you know this for certain?

Did I get this right? People are freaking out because they couldn’t play for 30min?
I’ve just downloaded it and my download rate was varying hugely, between 8MB/sec and 2KB/sec, but mostly around 900kb – 1MB. But in the end it only took 8 minutes to download the entire thing.
I think that’s fairly normal for my connection (not that I tend to watch the download speed for anything, I normally set it going and then do something else – I’m writing this post while it’s going). I couldn’t be bothered to actually work out what was going on in any detail, there’s usually about 20 things that can affect connection speed at any given time (the obvious one here being it’s peak time in the UK and although BT says they don’t deliberately throttle it everyone else getting online will have an impact).
Also if this is related to the DDOS attacks or other security issues you don’t actually want Anet to give out details of what was changed, because that could help the perpetrators (or others like them) do it again. A big part of any kind of security is secrecy – if other people don’t know how your security system works it’s much harder for them to get around it.
I doubt the update has anything to do with DoS attacks as software alone cant really do much about them. Net routing to a provider that has mitigation built in for DOS attacks would be possible though, but then they would be porting servers over to Cloudflare or some other service.
