I’m talking about these: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Unidentifiable_Object

What are they really, and what makes them unidentifiable? They’re not like other npc junk. You know what a dandelion is, and the text is marked in white. That kind of junk is used to add flavor in the game, and just give a sense of where you’ve been. These ‘unidentified objects’ are all texted in gray. And they look like…what? And story-wise, why would a champ carrying a bag of loot, bother with some wierd npcable junk?

I got a theory that these were potential loot drops (lodestones, bloodstone dust, exotics or rares) where you just didn’t have enough magic find luck to unlock upon opening the bag/box. Thus, you can’t identify what the heck it is, and might have npced a precurser.

Any others have a possible idea? Or are they really just random junk tossed into the game?

I’m saving them. Because one day you will need 1000 to combine them into an identifiable blob. Which will then be used by jewelers.

Nono, seriously that’s the Devs way of saying even asura don’t know everything.

“Whose Kitten is this?” – “It’s a Charr baby.”
“Whose Charr is this?”- “Ted’s.”
“Who’s Ted?”- “Ted’s dead, baby. Ted’s dead.”

I don’t get why all MMOs have these kinds of junk-items. All they are is cash that takes up inventory space.

In a world lacking a good reward system and suffering from inflation they seem entirely counterproductive.

Well, you would not really see the cash, so this gives you a reason to go “Oh boy, look at that all my 100+ pockets are full with stuff.” and then this list of copper/silver amounts runs along the side, just like a jackpot.

I’m happy there is autoloot options usually now, but grey junk just goes together with MMOs like peanut butter and popcorn.

Jelly.

They are damaged and lost artifacts from The Forgotten. When 250 of them are combined in the Mystic Forge with 250 globs of ecto, 150 mystic clovers, and 150 Mystic stones it gives you Legendary accessory “The Forgotten” Which procs a transformation into a Forgotten every 30s upon crit and doubles all your current stats.

Now your guess is as good as mine but here’s what I’ve got:

Notice how each bag that may contain them is/was located in an area of ruin? What appears to make them unidentifiable is the fact that they have been submerged in water, stepped on, burnt, etc. They are so destroyed that they it can no longer be told what they said or where.

In terms of story-wise, there isn’t any. They were added to the game about a year ago as a drop to the Lost Orrian Jewelry Boxes as the primary way Anet wants you to convert karma into gold. When they first came out, everyone was trying to find hidden uses for them, due to their speculation-inducing name.
Later, champ bags were added.
Later, unid objects were added to champ bags.

I’ve often wondered what the merchant is doing with so many dandelions and sticky goo and rocks and parts of animals (hoof, talon, fur, shell, fang, claw, bone, fin, leg)

Well, they could have just called it “vendor junk” but they needed something that sounded cooler.

To be fair though, if you replaced the names of 90% of my loot with “vendor” junk, nothing would have changed.

It’s still odd that the text shows up in gray, not white. It sets them separate from other junk.

They exist because they still give the player a tiny bit of loot, but bypassing the feeling of “I killed this enemy and got nothing”, even though functionally it IS almost nothing. They do add up after a while though, so just keep on merching them.

Seems like the ultimate in generic vendor trash loot. You get them from mobs, Orrian karma jewelry boxes, even champion bags. As unsatisfying as it is to get them, it’s still money that can help towards waypoint fees for example.

Something that really piqued my interest relatively recently was an odd drop I got during Ulgoth’s elemental hands phase. I have no idea what it came from, as it’d been a while since centaurs were in the area after having killed the Champ Warbeasts, and neither the hands nor the air gusts should be lootable. I got it on spamming AoE loot out of habit.

I thought I remember moving the peculiar item to my bank to keep a hold of, but it vanished without me noticing at some point. I suppose it might have been vendored with Sell Junk before I ever got to a bank or such…

They are simply there for atmosphere purposes. It could have been simply the cash value of that item, but these things are meant to make it look a bit more believable.

“Wonder what’s in this ancient chest! Hmm so sort of damaged crap, doesn’t seem to have any value. Bummer.”

They’re a minor hassle but without these little things the world would be far less immersive.

I suspect the Priory vaults are full of these things waiting to be categorized. If we will ever have a Deus Ex machina in the future, you will know that you might have held the Allmighty Pebble of Imminent Doom that will hold the souls of gods at some point…and sold it for a few silvers.
