I have been told that all loot drops from Mobs are unique to our character I am confused I have talked it over with friends who play the game and such and then thought about it myself….How is it unique of when we get loot what comes out of it is another professions equipment. Thats not unique to us. Thats someone elses loot. I am not saying I wished to get something for my profession handed to me. But if its a chance of getting equipment why not get other loot like trophies and other such things then it would be unique to Our characters. A set of gloves given to a Necromancer when they belong to a Guardian is not unique to a Necro. Just confused is all.

In other games, you have to “compete” with the other players for the loot that drops. So even if some nice stuff drops, chances are you are not getting it. In GW2, each player gets his/her own personal loot. So no competing with other players over that one drop.

Ok I understand that but how is that unique to US? That is just not competing that does not make it unique.Unique means if I am a level 10 I get level 10 equipment and if I am a guardian and its a chance I get equipment I get guardian equipment not Ele equipment. Thats what Unique translates to me.

Unique is the wrong word. Tosha is correct, though. It’s unique in that it belongs to you alone and someone else can’t “steal” your loot. Individual would be a better word.

The loot isn’t unique, the loot table is unique. If you are looking at “unique” as meaning unique to each toon you own getting things specifically for them then that isn’t the case. If you look at “unique” as meaning that each person who receives a drop gets that drop from their own personal loot table then that is accurate.

To one of your examples though, the loot does scale with toon level so that also adds another layer to how it is unique (for example anything below level 40 does not receive rare drops).

It’s better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt.

Loot drops are per character in the sense that the loot is reserved just for you and no one else can see or interact with it. It is not personalized in the sense that it was spawned just to be of use to your character.

What, you think when the ogres see your Warrior coming, they go “hey guys, put away those pistols and scepters and hide the leather coats, gimme that greatsword, he’ll get some use out of that one…”

I don’t think I’ve ever played a class-based game where you only get stuff for your class. In games like Diablo II, Neverwinter Nights, Torchlight, I get drops that my character can’t use all the time… same as in Rift, TERA, and any other MMO I’ve tried out. Where does this expectation come from?

The Word Unique thats where it comes from…its not unique if I am not getting something that applies to me so I think they used the wrong word is all…should have used different wording then unique cause the items are not unique their just dropped randomly like all the other MMO’s.

From Webster’s:

Definition of UNIQUE

  • 1
: being the only one : sole <his unique concern was his own comfort> <I can’t walk away with a unique copy. Suppose I lost it? — Kingsley Amis> <the unique factorization of a number into prime factors>
  • 2
a : being without a like or equal : unequaled <could stare at the flames, each one new, violent, unique — Robert Coover>
    b : distinctively characteristic : peculiar 1 <this is not a condition unique to California — Ronald Reagan>
  • 3
: unusual <a very unique ball-point pen> <we were fairly unique, the sixty of us, in that there wasn’t one good mixer in the bunch — J. D. Salinger>

Actually, I think it’s the right word persuant to common definitions 1 and 2. You’re the only one getting your loot, and it isn’t the same loot as everyone else looting it. I think you just don’t understand what that word means as well as you think you do.

Actually that’s not completely true, later in the game there are areas where things are not unique to the players and i have had to fight over things in certain areas, very few but they do exist, some in much later maps are not unique to players accounts..

Uh, no. At the worst there’s competing for actually dealing some damage to mobs in the shelter/pen farming chain to get your loot drop, but other player’s can’t steal your loot from thing you kill in any portion of the game. Or, if you want to get really specific, trying to get on a res fbefore the guy gets up to get credit for your daily or something, but in all of these cases everyone who actually helped do a thing gets individual rewards for said thing. There isn’t anywhere in the game where someone can effectively steal rewards you earned, though some events don’t scale well so other players can inadvertantly prevent you from earning them.

I am still not convinced that you cannot steal another persons loot I have been playing none stop for weeks off and on. I have seen it happen so many times its not funny. But I have learned to live with it cause the game is fun. I started myself a guild whether it takes from myself or others or not I think I will just get into the groove of things and just let whatever happens happen. My characters are doing pretty good at any rate so what do I have to lose other then better loot to guilds and loot campers. I can buy all that stuff over in stores and play by myself a good bit to make up for the loss EXP. Anyway just did not understand the unique thing guess something else I will just have to live with.

Alright as I said I am just letting it go it happens no one believes me anyway so I will just play the game. I know what I saw. I know that the body only shows to me that there is loot from what I am being told and if I am standing right by it and go to loot the body and someone walks by and it stops glowing within 3 seconds I know what that means. But it matters little I always just buy what I need if I cannot loot it. I have even taken other peoples loot on accident I know I did not touch that Mob and walked up and took it going off what I have been told but I never touched it…it was someone elses.

Happened in a few places. Around the Norn home lands where you fight the Champ Worm and such Also in the sylvari home land around the Nightmare court hide outs and a few other places.
Why does it matter where it happens it happens everywhere in the game. At least 50 places I have been to. There is no proving it cause I cannot screen cap it or video record it but its cool let it happen and everyone not see it matters little its not like it matters little every other MMO does it.

Wow, this thread went way out there.

RuneCrimson, as far as I have experienced and as far as the dev’s have told us, loot stealing is not possible in this game. It is not a simple matter of a glitch in the code where loot gets given to another player by accident. That loot spawns on the enemies body for you and you only.

For loot stealing to work, a dev would have to deliberately write the code so that each and every player that kills that enemy shares that one loot source. Whether you believe this is the case or not is up to you, but I choose to believe the people who actually made the game and wrote the code. I mean, if this is happening to you, it’s not a case of “it’s fine, every other MMO does it”, it’s a serious problem with the game that should be brought to the attention of the dev’s.

there are a few quests in the low level areas which seem kind of unfair by not making the loot unique. What do I mean by that – example: fastest way to gain completion is to bring goo dropped by the slime on death. 3 players attack the slime, but only one ball drops. A player has to pick it up and carry it back to the NPC (it disables your skills, you’re literally carrying the ball). However I think there are only 3 hearts like that in total and normally even on high pop servers the maps are big enough so that there wouldn’t be too many players at the same time.

Since the headstart event, I didn’t ever come across this problem of someone else stealing my loot. I tried to look at it from the perspective of “quest related drops” unique to particular quests, but OP said he didn’t even touch the mob yet stole it. Even quest related items don’t drop that way, unless OP is in a party and just tagged it with AoE. No way can you steal another player’s loot in this game.

What you’ve seen with your own eyes is the loot system at work. If you kill an ogre, he might have a weapon he took from ANYONE. He might have a bow, even though you’re an engineer. Not because you need the bow, it’s simply what he has. That doesn’t mean you don’t get unqiue rolls on loot tables.

Your drops aren’t tailored to you…you’re confusing unique for personalized. But your chance for a drop from each kill on each table is yours and yours alone.

Your change to get loot is unique but the loot itself is not personalized.

object you are writing about is dropped on death, but it’s not loot. well in this case it’s oozes dead body. if it was ‘loot’ you could pick it into your inventory
