•The Permanent Hair Stylist Contract is now a very rare drop from Black Lion Chests for the next 2 weeks only.

soooooooooo…… how many BL keys are you buying? Isn’t this thing worth about 200000g on the TP?

Do they have a sale on keys to coincide with it? People who get it are better off to just hold onto it until well after the two weeks are up if they plan to sell.

I haven’t logged in yet, so I’m not sure about a sale on BL keys. I don’t think you need to hold onto it if you get one. The notes say it’s a “very rare drop”. That means you’ll probably spend $200 on BL keys and still not get one. I don’t think a surplus will suddenly appear.

I bought 3 stacks when the keys were on sale earlier this month. The question is, do I burn through all 75 keys now in hopes of getting the contract, or wait for the next holiday event (when opening chests seems to net more)?

While there isn’t a specific sale on keys, the amount of keys you get in the Zephyrite Rescue Pack is a better deal than the typical key sale, even ignoring the other stuff in said pack.

Yeah, I’m going to buy the Zephyrite Rescue Pack just to try my luck. It was already an almost decent deal. The chance to get a Permanent Hair Stylist contract is the icing on the cake.

Although, in future I think I’m going to hoard up my Black Lion keys until special bonuses get added to the chests.

For only two weeks… it’s a start, but it’s still not good enough tbh.

Why not do the same with the other permanent contracts that are always (albeit a small chance) available through black lion chests? Why do they insist on making the perm hair style so much rarer than the others? I mean, really? Only two weeks?

I just find it extremely odd…

A good start, but odd…

I think this is purely an opportunity for another cash grab rather than doing it as a kind gesture for the GW2 community. It’s like… “Hey guys, we’re putting the perm hair style contract back in black lion chests FOR ONLY TWO WEEKS so make sure to buy up hundreds of keys, and even then, you probably won’t get one, but good luck and remember to give us all your money”.

Seriously… Make the permanent hair stylist contract a PERMANENT feature of the black lion chest, just like you have with all the other perm contracts available through black lion chests. It’s not hard.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s great it’s coming back… but the two weeks thing is just plain nuts.

If they made it unlimited, yet kept the rarity the same, some people would still rush in to purchase keys – but nowhere near as many that will because its “2 weeks only”.

kinda depends on the drop rate and whatever the max someone feels like paying is. might be that it is already close to its max regardless of rarity.
will people really go over much higher than 3500-4700 on a regular basis?

Now… let me preface this with saying…. I really want this item. If I could trade both of my legendaries and get this item, I would do so.

As a frequent gem buyer with real money, I tried to calculate how much real money I’d need to spend to get one of these babies off the TP.

Now first I estimated that it would cost 3500g. Considering the prices it is being offered at and the buy orders, I feel this is legitimate, but you can argue that number, that’s fine.

Then I said well… 100$ in the past has gotten me about 600g. So I rounded it up to 700g to make my numbers easier, and I feel that gem to good could get more and more profitable given that buying keys for the gamble might be worth it to some TP barons looking to have a go. So… 500$. Give or take. 500 dollars for this fabulous item.

Then… well. 500 bucks gives you 40k gems. Which translates to 160 hair style kits at full price, not buying in bulk.

Even though I would change my characters hair EVERY DAY if I got this item, and even though I’ve spent more than 5000 dollars over the course of 2 years playing this game, even I cannot justify the price of this item to warrant spending such a sum on it. Despite how much I want it. Despite how much I would trade for it. It’s a sad day indeed when I can’t justify the purchase of an item (and let me just say that I’ve justified some really ridiculous items!)

Please, Anet… this item should be a permanent drop. That way a year from now…. they won’t all be gone and people won’t be asking to trade 10’s of thousands of gold for it. Anet. Pls.

see this, is highly overated. Because anet isnt their own business. If the company you work for is making massive money, or if they are just making good money, they will probably pay you the same.
Fact is, most likely ncsoft has already decided their budget, and even though they are essentially one of their biggest earners, it really doesnt look like they have much more resources or pay, going by sources on the net.

That said, as you say businesses exist to make money, so they will obviously try to make money. Essentially its up the customers and the competition to say how far they can or should go. If people are buying, then from many standpoints they are doing exactly what they are supposed to be doing.

Well I spent $35 on some gems to get some keys to try for this. While I did not get one, I did rather well, with 3 full BL tickets plus about a dozen scraps, plus an endless mystery tonic which i sold for 79g, plus dye pack plus mini 3 pack, plus of course plenty of boosters and level tomes and those useless (to me) SP scrolls. All in all, my best haul out of BL chests. Ever.

BTW I note the permanent hairstyle contract is still 3500g on the TP, with only 2 available. So ya, no glut in the market yet hey!

Indeed. And it’s a bit disappointing that the gaming community has so readily bought into ‘pay per use’ micro transactions and RNG nonsense.

Permanent contracts for this and most of the other basic services should have been made available in the gem store, perhaps even as cash only purchases. This is the only sort of content I would further support this game with real money for, and be perfectly happy to do so.

Still not worth it, IMO, but at least you have a chance at other valuable items. I just don’t like that they specifically say “very rare”. To me that means don’t even bother. I don’t even think precursors are considered “very rare” and I’ve never even seen one.

Always amuses me when I see people defend ArenaNet for only wanting to make money, because they’re a business and that’s what a business is expected to do in order to survive. Funny thing is, people, that its not the only thing they’re expected to do.

As a business owner I can tell you that if it were all just about me counting the $ as it gets thrown at me, well then just about EVERYONE would be a business owner. So why is it that everyone isn’t? Product and/or services must be kept in good standing AND you must have great customer relations.

So please forgive me if I do point out when they make a cheap money grab and call them out on it, as they are severely lacking in their required business obligations. If they continue to stay afloat despite it all, so be it, either way I’m not going to remain quiet.

I checked the gem store to see if there was a promotion on keys like they had 2 weeks ago (iirc) but no, keys are at regular prices (125/1 or 5/500).

Got a ton of chests (and they go for 3-5 copper, so that’s not an issue) but considering the amount of keys you’d probably need makes the whole thing kinda… meh. At least for me.

On a side note, some chests would give you other useful items that are less rare, but still at the current price keys are… Sure, you can get 15 for 1000 gems from the zephyrite pack but that’s just a one time thing.

I’m with you on this. This item is THE item that I’ve most wanted in this game. Back when it was selling for about 400g, I tried saving up to get it. By the time I had enough gold, it was long gone and the buy orders were over 2000g. Now I have 900g with no hope of being able to buy one. So I will do a few key runs and hope I get lucky with the drops. Otherwise, I just have to accept that this is an item I will never have.

It’s not all that odd if you think about it. ArenaNet is only interested in making money. Giving people a 2 week limitation forces people to buy, Buy, BUY! If they made it unlimited, yet kept the rarity the same, some people would still rush in to purchase keys – but nowhere near as many that will because its “2 weeks only”.

I know Anet wants to make money, and they have every right – they’re a business, but the way they’re going about this is all wrong.

For every gem store cash grab they offer us, an item that they KNOW people will probably never get because the chances are soooo slim, it puts just as many people that want said item, off actually buying it. As well as any future purchases. It makes the customer think “is this really worth it? Do I want to support them if they’re going to continue doing this sort of thing?”. And I can’t speak for everyone, but I have seen many players say right here on the forums that they no longer support the gem store for X reason. That’s a lot of $$ going down the drain they could have kept if they only listened to their players.

I personally have probably opened up over 100 black lion chests in my lifetime, and not even seen a single perm contract of any sort (apparently they drop though – must be only going to those players who seem to get precursor drops all the time). How am I, as a potential customer, going to feel about having a mere 2 weeks in having a puddle’s chance at obtaining a perm hair style kit from a BLC, if I’ve opened up more than 100+ of them in the last two YEARS?

Does Anet really think we’re that stupid to waste our money on this? You’d be better off converting your real life money to gems and putting in one of those ridiculous 3,500g++ buy orders rather than trying to get one from a BLC. Horrible odds if you ask me. I know it definitely isn’t going to make ME want to buy keys – let alone farm them.

From a business point of view – to keep their wallet in check, and to keep their customers happy at the same time, ALL they had to do was add it permanently to the BLC just like they have with all the other perm contracts. And they couldn’t even do that.

At this rate, if nothing is changed, the perm hair style contract will be even more valuable than 1, 2, or even 3 legendaries. We’re already seeing it – there were only 2 available since the announcement this week (although at least it’s 2 more than a year ago >_< but still pathetic, regardless) and both were either sold for 4,750g each (one was listed at that price, the other being 1 copper above it), or they were cancelled and kept for an even better investment down the track.

It’s just wrong on so many levels, and I’m not Donald Trump, but I know a REALLY stupid deal when I see one.

Problem: Availability of perm hair style contracts
Solution: Add it as a very rare reward from a black lion chest – just like the other perm contracts

I’m not someone who likes gambling on keys, but I couldn’t not have a shot at such a fashionable prize! So I just gave it a try and grabbed a gem card + some gold exchange for the Zephirite pack and a BLK pack. Of course I didn’t get the hairstyle kit, but I was surprised at my luck, I received a total of 4 weapon tickets (3 whole ones and some scraps), 5 regular hair kits, some miniatures, level-up boosts and salvage kits.

Usually whenever I get a key it’s all rubbish, so I was quite satisfied with this! I think it helped that I chose to open them with my elementalist alt who picked Lyssa in the storyline, under the Lyssa statue in Divinity’s Reach, I mean she’s the goddess of fashion!

….thus endeth the lesson….

Gotta hand it to Anet.

Well there’s nothing wrong with buying gems if you can afford it. If you stop buying food to instead buy gems to try for a chance at an item that in the end is meaningless to anyone but you while you play a cyber-game… well, THEN you have a problem. And let’s face it, 99% of the GW2 population can’t afford to shell out 3500g (in game wealth) for one item, cuz… nerfs.

Purchasing gems isn’t the issue, gambling is, and it is incredibly stupid no matter how much money you have.

Well buying a stock is a gamble. Warren Buffet must be a complete moron.

Except with BL chests you can’t say: “I expect hair kits to rise today after X business thing happens.”

You can. I expect hair kits to rise to very high prices at the end of this 2 weeks. The fact that they exist to be dropped right now tells buyers that there might be some out there. So in 2 weeks they will start increasing their bids until they get their hands on one.

Unless the drop rate is increased I don’t see this item getting any cheaper than it is now. I suspect it will rise higher and higher and plateau at a price that people will just… not pay. So I’m not sure what price that is, but it will likely be over 5k.

But I’d guess a successful stock buyer will hedge their investments to make those high risk/high yield ventures worthwhile, the ones who don’t are the ones throwing themselves off roofs and bridges.

If you’re throwing benjamins at the vanishingly small probability of obtaining a single item, that’s the definition of casino gaming.

I had a gem card sitting around from mail-in-rebates and decided to purchase 25 keys plus 2 keys that I had from story completion in my bank. Those 27 keys didn’t bring me luck with the hair contract (I did get a weapon ticket, a few good dyes, and instant level up books) so I decided to buy the Rescue Pack since it is a good value.

I want this item in the worst way possible. I pray and dream about it (weird, I know). I thought it would never be brought back and here it is, the smallest of chances. I’ll probably earn a few more keys with personal story (I am an alt-o-holic so the hairkit would go very far with so many characters to customize) and wait until next week to open everything at once.

The prices on the TP for the lucky few who get this are insane. Even if I saved up all my gold from the moment I started playing (right at launch) I still wouldn’t have enough to compete at that level. I know in my heart the chances of me getting the kit are very slim. But I really enjoy GW2 so supporting them with a gem purchase and having a little fun is nice. Maybe my luck will change?

I’ll report back here once I open all my keys.

As I depart, just have to share this story…

A few weeks ago I grouped up with a player for a World Boss chain tour and we started talking. I mentioned how badly I wanted a chance for the kit to be brought back. The player mentions to me, “I vaguely remember getting that kit but I’m not sure.” When he was about to log he checked his bank and whispered me…“I do have the kit back from Wintersday! But I never use it and would give it to you if it were not bound since you seem like you would use it and like it a lot. Sorry!”

I thanked him for the kind gesture. Cried. Then logged.

You need to open the chest while the drop exists – meaning you have just two weeks to do so. You have a week and a bit left

a.net: I will not be buying gems with cash until you fix traits.

Well buying a stock is a gamble. Warren Buffet must be a complete moron.

Unfortunately, a lot of the language regarding stocks has become corrupted due to people who disparage market economies.

“Gambling” in the purest sense is a zero-sum game. On average, you neither make nor lose money from doing it.

“Gambling” as in Las Vegas is actually worse. The house always takes a cut, so it’s a negative-sum game. On average, you lose money from doing it. So it’s not really “gambling”, it’s throwing money away.

Stocks are (in the long-term) a positive-sum game. On average, you make money from them. So they’re not really gambling, they’re investing. Putting your money in a savings account in the bank is actually worse, because the bank just takes your money and invests it in stocks. They keep most of the gains, and pass a little bit into your savings account as a thank you (aka “interest”) for letting them use your money to make more money.

Since the valuation of unlimited hair styling kits floats based on the market, the price will self-adjust to where it’s a zero-sum game. i.e. You’ll spend as much money on keys as you’d make selling the kit. So it really is gambling.

There is nothing any more inherently wrong with gambling than with any other form of entertainment for which you pay.

Now if you are playing against the house with the expectation of making money…

I personally find it disgusting that there are obviously people out there who can afford to spend more than 5k gold just like that. Where did those people get so much gold from? I expect those people have everything they want already, exept the hair stylist, since there is no point of not buying the things you want with so much gold.
So I keep asking myself why there are those people in this game, which calls itself to be casual oriented, that can make so much more gold than everybody else.

I completely forgot to reply back with my results.

I opened about 130 boxes, here is the stuff I only cared about:

18x tomes of knowledge
3x Black Lion Weapon Tickets (all from scraps)
2x Total Makeover Kits

That was about it. RNG is the death of me after all that farming.

I may have missed this, so please forgive me, but is the permanent hair contract back in the RNG pool for good? I seem to recall that it was for two weeks only but heard it was still dropping for some people. I looked in yesterday’s patch notes but viewed nothing specific about the hair contract other than the drop percentage for all contracts was being slightly raised.
