Unsalvageable armors
Wvw armor can’t be salvaged or M forged, and Karma armor also has this issue. I’m fairly sure however, dungeon armor does not.
If wvw armor was salvagable then it would be free gold for eveyone i think that is a good choice arenanet made making them nonsalvagable

Could you really turn profit on the exotics, the rares maybe… but I highly doubt salvaging the 80 exotics would make up any reliable profit.
They should be salvageable but at a very low mat return rate.
Because those runes/sigils we set into those have value.
Dungeon armor has always been salvageable. Only armor that cannot be salvaged is Karma and WvW. Most karma armor can be forged, that’s the best way to turn karma into wool/linen/cotton.
Although salvaging WvW/karma armor might cause problems for the economy, especially Exotic ones that can drop insignia/ectos etc, I see absolutely no reason that we can’t recover updates from them. I can understand why we can’t, they don’t want us to directly change badges and karma into gold (although it’s possible using the mystic forge) but before the transmutation charge update you could very easily (and cheaply) save a rune/sigil from WvW/karma gear by using the old transmutation stones on top of the armor. That way you could keep the runes/sigils.
With the change on how transmutation works, that’s no longer possible. Perhaps an oversight?
I don’t even care if they altered the programming of these items to give 0 materials from salvaging, I just want my very expensive Runes (Strength/Speed) from my 3 sets of gear. FYI, please know the following before commenting. I placed those Runes in the gears back when you could Transmute gears with Transmutation Stones (please see https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Transmutation_Crystal ), so it was non issue, because I could just “combine” those non-salvageable gears with gears I wanted to change to, and the Runes would move with them. Therefore, I wouldn’t lose on an expensive investment. FYI, I made these gear sets within my first 3 months playing (80 isn’t hard to reach on 3 toons in that time) so I was unaware that they could not be salvaged, as I didn’t read the forums a lot at the time. Was still non-issue back then, because of the then-current system mentioned above. Extractors are also not a viable solution with their price point, because I would make more gold from Gem:Gold conversion than the Runes themselves cost. I am aware that Extractors are mainly intended for expensive Infusions as well. I am absolutely fine with not getting mats from the salvage, so long as I could use a Black Lion Salvage Kit and recover my Runes. Also, just in case anyone wants to assume that they made any announcement that the runes would be stuck with no cost effective way to move them as before or remove them entirely, because of the new Transmutation System (which I really like, btw), please see the official announcement here: https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/introducing-the-wardrobe-system/

It was an oversight before, the economical impact the possibility to recover an upgrade via transmuting onto another gear had, was bigger than they thought.
That was fixed with the wardrobe update.

But with players moving to ascended armor any way, the old trans trick would have just been useful for letting people wear an exotic set + runes they wanted and then move to the ascended.
Honestly I don’t mind the new system, though I do think the extractors should be brought WAY down in price (Does anyone buy these for anything other then polys, bees, expensive infusions?). My only real complaint about the change was people like myself who didn’t realize some of the runes I was planning on moving would be stuck forever. A warning or grace period for players would have gone a long way.
Why do these exist??
For fear that certain currencies might be easier to obtain and via salvaging impact the economy?
In my opinion they should be salvageable but without giving anything, just the rune / sigil with chance based on the salvage kit used, this would solve everything.

It wouldnt solve the problem of basically rendering the last sink for exotic runes useless.

Free gold? Not really, WvW equipment comes without sigils or runes and costs either karma and badges of honour, or gold and badges of honour, none of that is “free”. (You earned your karma/badges of honour through play, it’s not OK that it’s useless to many people).
The exotics should be salvagable, either way, in order to let people get their runes/sigils back. I personally don’t care if salvaging them would give you back crafting materials or not.

I don’t think that WvW or karma armours were intended as an exotic rune sink (I mean, until the wardrobe patch they weren’t a sink at all).
The fact that they can’t be salvaged just makes those armours significantly less attractive to players and removes those armour types as a viable karma/badge of honour sink.
They should make it possible to salvage anything you add to those armors, nothing more, that would not impact the economy at all, except to bring rune prices down to something more reasonable…

So i just buy melandru gear with karma, as I have about 6 million of it, and get the rune to sell it?
Sounds legit.

No, they are talking about runes that they put in, not runes that were there already. Runes that were added should have some salvage rate, not zero.

Explain me then, how in this scenario, exotic runes leave the economy and you avoid every single rune to be available at vendor value. Not only the exotic ones but also the rares. If there wouldnt be any expensive exotic runes anymore, rare runes would also go towards vendor value.

And since there is NO in-game warning that you can’t salvage/forge these items they’re a trap for new players. Yeah I want to be able to salvage the few bits of wvw gear I bought early on, but I’d be happy with the tool tip of those items being clear that you cannot salvage/forge them so those who don’t know will know what they’re getting before they buy them.

You probably won’t make much money since the market price for melandru runes would crash to a couple of silver each.

Original runes will be soulbound, exactly as for dungeon armors.
If Anet wants runes to leave the game, they can enable the recipe to transmute 4 exotic runes to get 1 random exotic rune .

buying and selling rams would still be more profitable than buying and salvaging badge items.
flame ram: 6 badges ->2s (33c each)
exotic armor: 86s + 130 badges -> 1.25 ecto + 0.42 insignia -> ~48s (37c each)
rare weapon: 1g + 132 badges -> 0.9 ecto -> -64s (-50c each)
edit: uhhhh, there was a cheaper armor than I thought at first :P that actually would be a better rate, at least until another wvw tournament happens and rams double in price.
my guess for why you can’t salvage karma or badge items is that they initially thought it wouldn’t be a good idea, and never had enough reason to change it.
I would guess that it’s better economics to not have too much ability to exchange currencies with each other. Similar to how you can’t turn geodes and crests directly into gold (you can turn them into other things that turn into gold, but it’s not increasing the gold supply – only the intermediary item supply), and the ability to turn most other currencies into gold is very limited (commendations only has the inscriptions).
They probably feel differently about this now (an example being the direct crest to materials exchange) and would likely make these items salvageable if they added them to the game today. It’s usually better not to change something unless there is a good reason to. We may find them wanting to devalue ectos some time in the future, and their answer might be to make these salvageable until then, I recommend never buying karma or badge items.

Precisely. They’re only worth what they’re worth because of supply and demand.
The market would adjust in an afternoon. That is not a problem.
i guess what we all want is some freedom regarding WvW armor which is unsalvagable and unforgeable.
I also agree that i’d rather have the wvw armor salvage and give no components back other than a chance at retrieving the rune i fitted it with in accordance to the salvage chance of the kit i’m using.
I have a set with confusion rune that i don’t need anymore and i would really like to salvage this armor set using the black lion salvage kit i got, but no, it’s gotta be unsalvageable.
