Years back, when unlimited mining, unlimited lumbering tool, unlimited harvest tools were soulbound, I didn’t mind purchasing several sets for each character I had on my account. Then the recent HoT Update added an account wide inventory that allowed items to be shared across several characters within the account. This basically made it more practical to get and use to put my gathering tools in so that I could log on any character pull the gathering tools from the account wide slot, then put back if I switched to another character within my account.

So now I have several sets of unlimited gathering tools that I don’t use. I had asked anet for some advice on what I could do with these unused tools since I invested on the account wide slots as a means to use for my one set.

I currently have about 5 sets of the unlimited mining,lumber, and harvesting tools

What they responded with is basically “We’re sorry we cannot do anything about it since you got them long before the update”.

I was hoping for some advice on what I could do then.

This may be unreasonable, but I was really hoping to get some help on something that was first soul-bound, then account-bound, then made more viable as a single set due to account wide slots being available.

Or is it really a “buyer should have known better” idea that I have to consider? If so, should I then not get any other items in the future that may result in it being available in a more practical manner?

Sorry to hear you are unhappy, but the policy is refunds on items purchased within ~30 days of a change. I’m sure you enjoyed your purchases for however many months/years you had them.

I would not want the company to refrain from making any QoL improvements that might make previous items obsolete. Of course, ymmv.

This issue has been discussed exhaustively previously at the time of the change. You can likely find the former threads with the assistance of Google.

Since you asked for advice Shin…my approach has been to use my own ‘spare’ tool sets as part of the overall theme for characters.

I main Ele, who uses the Molten scythe/Consortium axe and the Clockwork pick just for the bonus cogs. My necro uses the full Bone set, my Ranger uses a mix based on the whole ‘nature’ theme (Frost Wasp etc), while my Engi uses the Mad Scientist set.

I still buy new tools as they come out, if I like the effect/theme, most recently the Cosmic because what’s not to love about a personal wormhole

Like Inculpatus said, refunds on items like this are never going to be a thing outside the 30 day ‘buyers remorse’ period – but it’s all about enjoyment and I buy/equip accordingly.

Be proud you could afford all those sets as well, many players out there who would like to have that kind of ‘bling’ flexibility afforded by multiple tool sets.

I would offer one suggestion for general consideration, making tools saleable/tradeable could be a nice QoL addition – giving players the option to exchange sets (maybe on a 2 for 1 basis) through the gemstore, so they could replace for new sets if they wanted to. without feeling quite as much burn on cost. Could also be an additional goldsink if perma-tools were tradeable and not bound at all. Basically adding a ‘used tools’ market.

This would not (I think) have any major impact on Anet’a income stream, since someone would have already bought them from the gemstore at some point and they would still ‘gain’ from the sales tax helping balance the economy.

Kind of an existing’ lowkey’ precedent for unbound tools already ingame – the Fall Adventure consumable toolsack from Daemongrub Pits, that gives a random stack of copper grade tool when opened and which can be traded/sold on TP while unopened.

I would even settle for being allowed to gift (no money, gold, or gems involved) to another player such as a friend or Guildy. I personally have no plan to move my tools to the shareable slots (got all 11 full already) but I do have like 5 extra copper salvaging tools and it sure would be nice to be able to share with someone!!!

When they changed the tools, they let people swap them to account bound, and as long as you made 1 account bound, and left 1 soulbound, then they were willing to credit the gems.

If you changed them all to account bound, that might be the issue. (I had 2 picks, I put in my ticket at the time, and got the credit for 1 molten pick, turned around and added 200 gems and got the watchwork pick when it came out.) I’d ask again in the ticket about that, and even check if the wiki says anything about it to see.

Remember though, it was only the molten pick, lightning lumber (whatever it’s called) and the consortium harvest node that were soulbound. I know it’s only those because I kept my 2 node and lumber ones since I needed 2, and it was when watchwork was released because I wanted to swap my molten for the watchwork pick.
