Update made us fail first guild bounty
my condolences…
Some things never change. They’ve been doing this ‘one-hours-notice-is-actually-three-minutes’ thing since release. Gets people every time but what can you do?
lunawisp was my peacebringer on City of Heroes – she lives on in memory as my gaming id.
WITHIN the next hour.
That could be 10 minutes from now or it could be 59 minutes from now.
You saw the warning. Don’t start things when you don’t know the exact time for the update.

As I wrote, I’m perfectly aware of the meaning of “within”, I just suggested to change that form with “shortly” so that people who don’t speak english well (like many of my guildmates) don’t misjudge the time they’ve got to do some activities.

Problem with shortly is that it is a very badly defined word.
Shortly can be everything from now until the coming week or so depending on how you read it.
Within the hour does give a rather clear indication on when it will happen.

not really that clear. But I also agree on your point for “shortly”. What about giving a definite time for the update? Would that be possible? Like, for instance, announcing an update in the forums at least 12-24 hours before it’s made and maybe say “at 17.30 a new build will be available”. Even if it’s not accurate, and it actually happens at around 18.00. That would give a more precise idea of wheter people should or not do something…
or, maybe, do updates on less populated hours (early morning?)
Definite times arnt possible because the devs don’t know exactly when the build will be ready for deployment or how long it will take to deploy (including uploading to the CDN’s). Anets tech is pretty fancy as it lets us play during patch deployment on the older version.

They could just say..“Incoming new build, don’t start anything important.”
Came here to basically say the exact same thing. The game update that happened today caused my guild to fail a bounty mission Like the OP, we assumed “within the next hour” was fine since it only takes 15 minutes, but yeah, we lost out.
A more accurate timer would be awesome, or perhaps it’s possible to not disconnect guild members with active missions? In the same way that players in a dungeon don’t get disconnected until they leave.
That’s not possible as keeping the old version running longer eats up system resources.
Theres a reason why instances have longer resets than the open world.

Sorry you missed out. I think that sort of thing falls under the rubric of, “Kitten happens.” I still prefer GW2’s hot fixes to other games’ hours long servers down, though.
I mean sometimes you just have to laugh at things. This time the update burned you it has got us all at one point or another. Remember when the game started the first two weeks it was constant zapping us offline. Now it’s like once a month if that, so all I can say is suck it up.

Sure thing, I’ve already queued 2 more tier 1 bounties loved the hunt!

I just had visions of Reboot with that. Warning. Incoming game….

The post said “in an hour”. Technically speaking, saying “in an hour” means after an hour or so. “within an hour” would be more appropriate imo.

Just another way to get trolled by Anet lol. We got Kamali twice in a row Sunday. We beat it the fist time just barely and failed the timer the second time.
Luckily it only costs like 200 influence and about another hour of setup lol to try again.
They need to fix the warning system

I guess the real question is, if they say in the next hour, does it mean they have to just push it out then and there?
The idea is, you have an hour…so give some players some time to log out or finish what they were doing etc and log off somewhere safe.
How about holding the forced server updates back a little, and posting a global “WARNING – in 10 mins the server will update”?
Is a little more warning, still within the allotted time-frame of an hour, that hard to do?
There are a lot of things, including WvW, that can be affected by a sudden update. An ANet poster has mentioned in the past that we would be giving about an hours notice before an update suddenly so that we can plan for it, but I have never seen them actually have the patience to do that. It is really irritating when they do it this way.
Happened to my guild last week. You have my sympathies. All you can really do is load up another one and try again. But yeah, it’s frustrating. The only other bounty we’d failed prior to that was the first one we attempted, before we knew what we were doing.
